Sinus Disventilation and Atrophy of the Upper Maxilla: A Combined Surgical Approach Is Possible?

This study aims to assess the effectiveness and reliability of a new combined approach to treat the maxillary atrophy and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and other rhino-sinusal pathologies. This 1-step procedure consisting functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and maxillary sinus-lift with simultaneous implant placement for patients with a severe reabsorbed maxillary bone and sinuses' disease. In case of disventilation and maxillary sinuses flogosis, the mucociliary clearance and physiological ventilation have to be aided, in order to make a safer and predictable sinus-lift surgery. This ne

Subacute sinusitis in children.

The bacteriologic characteristics of subacute maxillary sinusitis have not been delineated in the pediatric age group. Forty children between the ages of 2 and 12 years with respiratory symptoms for at least 30 but less than 120 days were evaluated. Nasal discharge and cough were the most prominent symptoms. Common radiographic findings were diffuse opacification and mucosal thickenings. Sinus aspiration was performed on 52 sinuses of 40 children. Bacterial colony counts greater than or equal to 10(4) colony-forming units per milliliter were found in 30 (58%) of 52 sinus aspirates obtained fro…

[Sinusitis of dental origin].

In recent years, an increasing number of dental infections of the maxillary sinus has been observed. A prerequisite for a bacterial infection of the maxillary sinus is the perforation of Schneider's membrane. Pathogenetically, the ostiomeatal unit is only secondarily involved due to the infection ascending from the maxillary sinus floor. Besides the anamnesis, imaging procedures are important, whereby the high-resolution CT and CBCT (cone beam CT) have a special task due to their three-dimensional resolution. A dental X-ray or a dental examination for diagnosis is not sufficient in many cases.

Antimicrobial treatment of sinusitis.

Sinusitis is a common disease. Most cases of acute sinusitis involve the maxillary sinus and occur after viral infections of the upper respiratory tract. The usual pathogens are Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis is also an important pathogen in children. Anaerobic infections are more common in chronic sinusitis. Fungi are frequently observed in granulocytopenic cancer patients but also can occur in apparently normal hosts. Many strains of H influenzae and M catarrhalis observed in patients with sinusitis produce beta-lactamases. Many antim

[Cholesteatoma of the facial sinuses. Apropos of an ethmoid-orbital cholesteatoma].

A case of cholesteatoma of the ethmoid extending to the orbit is reported. These cholesteatomas of facial sinuses are rarely reported, those documented involving localization in maxillary or frontal, or ethmoido-frontal or ethmoido-maxillary sinuses. Primary perisinusal cholesteatomas of embryonic origin must be distinguished from the rarer secondary iatrogenic or post-traumatic lesions. Histopathology allows distinction between epidermoid cysts and cholesterol type granulomas. Treatment is by surgery using a wide approach.

Combined Endoscopic and Trans Palpebral Orbital Reconstruction for Silent Sinus Syndrome.

Silent Sinus Syndrome is defined as a painless spontaneous and progressive enophthalmos and hypoglobus with maxillary sinus hypoplasia and orbital floor resorption. It is caused by maxillary sinus atelectasis in a setting of ipsilateral chronic maxillary sinus hypoventilation. The syndrome was first described in 1964 by Montgomery, but the term "Silent Sinus Syndrome" was not coined until 1994 by Soparkar. The aetiology is still controversial: some authors postulate a basal hypoplastic sinus, other suggest an acquired process due to an obstruction of the ostium in the medium meatus. Silent Sin

Analysis of Sinus Inflammation Associated With Maxillary Sinus Fungal Ball Based on CT Imaging.

Background: Paranasal sinus fungal balls usually occur unilaterally, and the maxillary sinus is most commonly involved. However, other sinuses could be concomitantly inflammed, and this phenomenon is rarely discussed. Aims/Objectives: To evaluate the severity of maxillary sinus fungal ball (MSFB) and the occurrence of sinus inflammation in paranasal sinuses according to the image findings and analyze the potential correlations. Material and Methods: A total of 1226 cases of MSFB were divided into 2 groups according to ostiomeatal complex obstruction on computed tomography. The potential correl

Vascular connections of the lateral wall of the sinus: surgical effect in sinus augmentation.

PURPOSE: There are several vascular vessels that supply the maxillary sinus, such as the posterior superior alveolar artery, the anterior superior alveolar artery, and the infraorbital artery (IOA). These vessels have to be taken into consideration during a sinus augmentation because of the potential risk of bleeding during the procedure. The objective of this investigation was to study variations in maxillary sinus artery connections with the potential surgical effect during a sinus floor elevation by the lateral wall. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The first part of the study was done in 32 anatomi

Evaluation of Dimensional Changes in Maxillary and Frontal Sinus in Adult Patients With Anterior Open Bite and Normal Overbite: A Retrospective Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Study.

INTRODUCTION: An anterior open bite is a form of vertical discrepancy that presents as a lack of contact between maxillary and mandibular segments. The treatment modalities usually involve either intrusion of posterior teeth or extrusion of anterior or a combination of both. The anatomical relationship between the apex of the maxillary molar roots to the inferior wall of the maxillary sinus floor is crucial in planning posterior intrusion. The paranasal sinuses influence the growth of the facial structures that eventually get altered in various malocclusions. Studies have proven that the heigh
