Managing the physical sequelae of facial trauma is routine for the maxillofacial surgeon. However, managing the psychological consequences is more challenging. The often violent mechanism of injury, changes in appearance, altered self-perception, and self-confidence can significantly impact daily life. This review summarises the literature regarding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and facial trauma, highlighting evidence to guide clinical practice. PubMed and MEDLINE were searched for relevant keywords and MeSH headings. Articles between 2000-2022 were independently reviewed by two autho

The epidemiology of facial trauma may vary widely across countries (and even within the same country), and is dependent on several cultural and socioeconomic factors. We know of few reviews of published reports that have considered the sex distribution and aetiology of maxillofacial trauma throughout the world. The aim of this review was to discuss these aspects as they have been presented in papers published during the last 30 years. We made a systematic review of papers about the epidemiology of maxillofacial trauma that were published between January 1980 and December 2013 and identified 69

This article highlights a certain number of clinical conditions where one can encounter facial asymmetry. Among the many different etiological factors detailed are developmental anomalies, including those associated with under-development or over-development, asymmetry associated with trauma, as well as, those related to tumors. An in-depth analysis will allow a dentist to review differential diagnosis relative to asymmetry and note those within their competency level.

A case of supraglottic obstruction resulting from a penetrating temporal injury is described. Despite the innocuous entry wound extensive occult injury had occurred and was initially overlooked. Diagnostic, anatomical and therapeutic considerations are discussed.

In the United Kingdom there appears to be little available information concerning the prevalence and the patterns of head and of facial injuries sustained in road traffic accidents by motorcyclists wearing protective helmets. The present preliminary survey was of 56 accidents in urban traffic. 50 per cent of surviving motor-cyclists incurred head injuries. Soft tissue facial wounds were sustained by 38 per cent and fractures of facial bone and teeth by 11 per cent of the injured. The majority of the accidents occurred at speeds of 30 m.p.h. or less to riders of machines of small cubic capacity

PURPOSE: This study compared photo-biomodulation (PBM) and ozone therapy (OT) for mental nerve injury by counting Schwann cells (SCs) and fasciculated nerve branches and measuring fascicular nerve areas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of OT and PBM on mental nerve injury were evaluated. Mental nerves of 27 rats were partly sutured and allocated into 3 groups. Group 1 received no treatment, group 2 received OT, and group 3 received PBM. The number of fascicules beyond nerve branches and the number of SCs before and after nerve injury were evaluated histologically.
RESULTS: A better healin

This study included 235 patients with missile injuries of the facial skeleton, who were treated in the Maxillofacial Unit of the Hospital of Specialized Surgery in Medical City, Baghdad, Iraq, during a period of 4 years of war, since Iraq became the international battlefield for terrorism. There were 195 men and 40 women, with ages ranging from 1 to 70 years (mean, 39.5 years); all patients had severe facial injuries and posttraumatic missile deformities, including 27 patients with orbital injuries. This study also evaluates the management of the immediate, intermediate, and secondary phases.D

Maxillofacial injuries in general occur quite commonly following trauma and these injuries if not properly managed can negatively influence both the psychosocial and functional activities of the patient. This is as a result of the centrality of the facial region as a key factor in human identity, aesthetics, and general well-being. Fractures involving the facial skeleton may be isolated or complex. High velocity trauma is usually seen in urban and semi-urban areas while low velocity trauma is the common setting in rural areas. The pattern of faciomaxillary fractures vary with geographical area…

Coronectomy is the intentional partial removal of a tooth. Thereby the crown of the tooth is removed and the roots are left in place. Compared to the complete operative removal of a wisdom tooth, the incidence of inferior alveolar nerve injury (IANI) is lower. The aim of this study is a survey on the use and acceptance of wisdom tooth coronectomy in Switzerland. An anonymous questionnaire was sent to 266 dentists specialized in oral surgery or maxillofacial surgeons; 58.3% of the questionnaires were returned and could be assessed. The statistical analysis was performed using Fisher’s exact tes

AIM: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of maxillofacial fractures and associated fractures in patients seen in the Oral Surgery Unit of Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda.
METHODOLOGY: A six-month prospective study was conducted. Data collected included socio-demographic factors, type and etiology of injury, additional fractures, and post-surgery complications.
RESULTS: One hundred thirty-two (132) cases ranging from 5-70 yrs of age were reported, with a male: female ratio of 7.7:1. The 21-30 yr age group was the largest, comprising 51.51% of cases (n=68). Road traffic acciden
