Sex, sport and doping: conflicts for bioethical analysis.

It seems beyond doubt that the practice of certain sports requires gender differentiation, given the sexlinked characteristics that determine different levels of performance and skills. Moreover, there is a consensus on condemning doping practices, such as attempts to artificially alter the physical performance of athletes through the use of certain substances, because they involve tampering with the physical or mental conditions of the persons involved, as well as practices that have health risks, with consequences that can become serious and irreversible. In the case of ″trans″ athletes, the

Conducting Health Research in Carceral Systems: Considerations and Recommendations.

Although the number of people incarcerated in the United States has grown dramatically, research on how incarceration affects individuals and the communities they return to has lagged behind. This may be because of the unique challenges of doing research within carceral systems and the relatively small number of investigators who are competent to undertake these efforts. We provide a primer for investigators with limited experience conducting research in carceral settings and highlight considerations and recommendations that may aid those conducting health research with incarcerated persons. We

Comparing the Multicomponent Coping Power Program to Individualized Parent-Child Treatment for Improving the Parenting Efficacy and Satisfaction of Parents of Children with Conduct Problems.

This study compared the multicomponent Coping Power (group) program to individualized parent-child treatment with respect to changing the parenting efficacy and satisfaction of parents of children with conduct problems. One hundred fourteen parents of 9-12-year-old children with conduct problems were randomized to Coping Power or individualized treatment at an urban children's mental health clinic. Parents reported their pre- and post-treatment parenting efficacy and parenting satisfaction (Parent Sense of Competence Scale). Mixed effect models revealed that parenting efficacy and satisfaction

Implementation and Outcomes of Forensic Housing First Programs.

This mixed-method study used administrative data from 68 supportive housing programs and evaluative and qualitative site visit data from a subset of four forensic programs to (a) compare fidelity to the Housing First model and residential client outcomes between forensic and nonforensic programs and (b) investigate whether and how providers working in forensic programs can navigate competing Housing First principles and criminal justice mandates. Quantitative findings suggested that forensic programs were less likely to follow a harm reduction approach to substance use and clients in those pro

"Who can you tell?" Features of Arab culture that influence conceptualization and treatment of childhood sexual abuse.

The literature on child sexual abuse reflects growing recognition of the manner in which culture impacts the conceptualization, experience, and treatment of such cases. Despite heightened visibility of Arab Americans within the United States, population due to recent media attention, little empirical research exists on the occurrence of child sexual abuse within this population. Arab culture is often characterized by an emphasis on collectivism and familial obligations, and such features may prove to either facilitate or impede assessment and treatment of child sexual abuse, depending on how t

Involvement of nurses in the euthanasia care process in Flanders (Belgium): an exploration of two perspectives.

This study explored nurses' involvement in the care process for mentally competent, terminally ill patients requesting euthanasia in general hospitals in Flanders, Belgium. In-depth interviews with 18 nurses who had experience in caring for patients requesting euthanasia since May 2002 were analyzed using grounded theory qualitative methods. We found that the involvement of nurses in the care process is influenced by their predominant perspective on it: the procedural, action-focused perspective, from which good practical organization of the care process is essential; or the existential-interp

Determinants of psychosomatic complaints in Swedish schoolchildren aged seven to twelve years.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate determinants of psychosomatic complaints (PSC) in children. The model assumes that variables are working on three levels: the proximal level (the child), the intermediate level (the family), and the distal level (the society). METHODS: Data were obtained from a large cross-sectional survey on children's health and well-being in the Nordic countries. A questionnaire was sent to the parents of a representative sample of 1,163 Swedish children aged seven to 12 years. The analysis included a multivariate analysis using the LISREL program. RESUL

TMR children's competence in processing negation.

Previous researchers have suggested that TMR children lack the competence to process negation. Questions about the appropriateness of using reversible sentences to test comprehension and observations on TMR children's imitative processing of simple affirmative and negative sentences led to an experimental reexamination of the earlier findings. Institutionalized students ranging in age from 10 to 21 years with a mean IQ of 30 were asked to evaluate 16 picture pairs, 8 each for nonreversible and reversible sentences. Nonreversible sentences, both positive and negative, were interpreted correctly

Benefits to Down's syndrome children through training their mothers.

This study investigated the hypothesis that training of mothers with Down's syndrome children would be beneficial both to the child and parents. The mothers were taught behaviour modification techniques based on learning theory and were given group discussions on dealing with their family or personal problems. The subjects were 16 mothers with a Down's syndrome child, divided into two groups on the basis of their child's sex and chronological and mental ages. The Griffiths Scale was used for assessment. The mothers in the treatment group received 12 sessions of training and group counseling ov

Multimorbidity patterns and the subsequent risk of albuminuria: findings from the Stockholm Creatinine Measurements (SCREAM) project.

BACKGROUND: Chronic conditions often cluster together, forming distinct multimorbidity patterns. We aimed to explore how such patterns are associated with the risk of albuminuria. METHODS: We utilized the Stockholm Creatinine Measurements (SCREAM) project, comprising 675,570 adults undergoing outpatient albuminuria testing in Stockholm, Sweden. Disease patterns were derived in adults without albuminuria at baseline, stratified by age (18-64, 65-74, ≥ 75 years). Associations with incident albuminuria (albumin-creatinine ratio > 30 mg/g) and macroalbuminuria (> 300 mg/g) were examined using Cox

Challenges perceived by social workers to prevent FGM/C in Bavaria: a prospective, cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, at least 230 million girls and women are affected by female genital mutilation/ cutting (FGM/C). FGM/C violates human rights and can cause irreparable harm and even lead to death. In 2022, more than 100,000 survivors of FGM/C lived in Germany, and more than 17,000 girls were considered at risk. Due to the increasing number, there is a need to improve the skills of professionals not only to treat FGM/C but also to prevent it, aiming to maintain or improve women's physical and mental health. However, previous studies mostly focused on health care providers, even though oth

Parenting a child with Down syndrome: A qualitative study on parents' experiences and behaviors from a self-determination theory perspective.

PURPOSE: Raising a child with Down syndrome (DS) brings unique challenges to parents' psychological functioning. Extensive quantitative research has shown that these parents tend to experience higher levels of parental stress and lower well-being. However, a more in-depth and balanced insight is essential to fully grasp the complexity of parenting a child with DS. To address this gap, this study uses a qualitative approach to explore the experiences and behaviors of parents raising a child with DS. DESIGN AND METHODS: By adopting the Self-Determination Theory as a comprehensive theoretical fr

The perceived needs-access gap for health services among persons with disabilities in a rural area within South Africa.

Purpose: Health should be a universal phenomenon. However, little is known about the relationship between disability status and health issues - particularly in rural areas. This study looks at health issues of persons with disabilities in Madwaleni, a rural impoverished area in South Africa in 2011, and compares them to persons with no disabilities. Materials and Methods: Standardized questionnaires were used in the survey to assess disability and health status. The sample comprised of 773 individuals - 322 persons with disability and 451 comparisons (without disability) - covering 527 househo

Resilience factors counteract intergenerational risk for adolescent maladjustment related to family mental health history and childhood adversity.

Intergenerational risk within families, stemming from familial history of mental health problems and encompassing exposure to childhood adversity, poses challenges to adolescent adjustment. However, it is important to recognize that negative developmental outcomes associated with intergenerational risk are not inevitable. To better understand resilience in this context, there is a need for studies that systematically compare different models of resilience. Further, few studies have estimated what level of adjustment should be expected for youth with high intergenerational risk but also a diver

Economic costs of perinatal depression and anxiety in a lower middle income country: Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Women's mental health during the perinatal period is a major public health problem in Pakistan. Many challenges and competing priorities prevent progress to address the large treatment gap. Aim To quantify the long-term impacts of untreated perinatal depression and anxiety in economic terms, thus highlighting its overall burden based on country-specific evidence. METHODS: Cost estimates were generated for a hypothetical cohort of women giving birth in 2017, and their children. Women and children experiencing adverse events linked to perinatal mental health problems were modelled o

The Reflective Functioning Questionnaire-Revised- 7 (RFQ-R-7): A new measurement model assessing hypomentalization.

Although it is a widely used questionnaire, limitations regarding the scoring procedure and the structural validity of the eight-item Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ-8) were raised. The present study aimed to examine further the latent dimensionality of the RFQ-8 and to examine linear and non-linear associations between mentalization difficulties and maladaptive psychological characteristics. Data from two separate representative samples of young adults (N = 3890; females: 51.68%; mean age: 27.06 years [SD = 4.76]) and adults (N = 1385; females: 53.20%; mean age: 41.77 years [SD = 13
