Silica gel impregnated with a mixture of Aliquat 336 and Calcon was used as chelating sorbent for preconcentration of metals from dilute aqueous solutions and their separation as well as for additional purification of analytical grade sodium and potassium salts from other metals. Mercury and selenium concentrations were positively correlated in liver tissue of beaver, raccoon and otter from an undisturbed watershed in south central Ontario. Selenium accumulation in piscivorous mammals may represent a protective mechanism against methylmercury toxicity to animals exposed to high mercury levels in their diet. This paper also reports the levels of several other metals in tissues of three wild fur-bearing mammal species.

The effects of seizures on the cerebral and peripheral metabolism of essential metals were studied in mice. Acute and chronic seizures were produced either by electroshock (ES) or by a systemic convulsant. Organ and subcellular distribution of 54Mn and 65Zn were determined prior to and at different intervals after seizure cessation. The selective determination of aluminium or gallium by EDTA titration is reported. Gallium or aluminium is titrated together with other multivalent ions with EDTA at pH 3-7 and then the pH is raised above 10.5. Aluminates or galliumates are formed with the consequent release of EDTA from the EDTA complexes. The released EDTA is titrated with lead solution using Xylenol Orange as an indicator and with copper using photometric detection of the end-point, for the determination of gallium and aluminium respectively. The theoretical basis of the procedure is discussed.
