Strong Interaction between Two-Unit-Cell Heterostructure Layers Realigns Defect Energy Level for Methanol Photosynthesis.

The photocatalytic conversions of CO2 and H2O offer a sustainable approach to provide methanol as a fuel and life-essential O2. However, the reaction efficiency is challenged by charge recombination and sluggish reaction kinetics. This work synthesizes single-unit-cell MoS2-x and organomanganese complex (MnBO) layers. The strong interaction between MoS2-x and MnBO gives rise to an atomic-layered heterostructure (MnBO/MoS2-x) with substantial electron transfer through the Mn-S bindings at the interface. This heterostructure achieves a methanol yield of 1.48 mmol g-1 h-1 with a selectivity of 99…

Metabolic engineering of Pichia pastoris as an industrial chassis enables biosynthesis of dopamine from methanol.

Methanol, as a renewable and carbon-neutral single-carbon (C1) feedstock, has emerged as an ideal carbon source for green biomanufacturing due to its non-competition with food resources and scalability for industrial production. Here, we report the first efficient biosynthesis of dopamine from methanol through systematic metabolic engineering strategies in P. pastoris. Specifically, overexpressing high-activity tyrosine hydroxylase and enhancing shikimate pathway flux yielded 579 mg/L dopamine. To prevent degradation, key dopamine catabolic enzymes (PAS_chr1-4_0441) were knocked out. By reinfo…

Structural changes induced by the promoter Ga in nanocrystalline ZnO support used in methanol catalysis.

Ga has an ionic radius fitting the radius of Zn much better than Al, which makes it an interesting candidate for doping of ZnO, which is relevant in context with Cu/ZnO-catalysts and with transparent conductive oxides. Here, the structural changes of Ga-doping of nano-scale ZnO, which is obtained via thermal decomposition of hydrozincite, are studied by a combination of X-ray diffraction, 71Ga/1H MAS NMR, quantum-chemical calculations and electron microscopy techniques. By quantum chemical calculations the NMR fingerprint of different Ga point defects is predicted, the calculations are validat

Dizygotic Atomic Platinum and Palladium on Carbon for High-Performance Ethanol and Methanol Electro-Oxidation.

Dizygotic-atom-site catalysts (DASCs), consisting of multi-atomic dispersed catalytic centers, perform well in several reactions but have poor electrocatalytic activity toward alcohol electro-oxidation. In this study, DASCs of atomically dispersed platinum and palladium on nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (Pt1Pd1/NCNC) are successfully synthesized using an impregnation-adsorption method. The Pt1Pd1/NCNC catalyst has higher mass activity toward ethanol and methanol oxidation than commercial Pt/C and Pd/C. In contrast, Pt or Pd single-atom catalysts on nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages are virtuall…

Microenvironment engineering unveils surface methoxy species origination in zeolite-catalyzed methanol chemistry under mild conditions.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? This age-old riddle is also present for the formation sequence of the surface methoxy species and dimethyl ether in zeolite-catalyzed methanol chemistry due to their inevitable interconversion at high temperatures. The challenge is the lack of feasible reaction conditions to achieve the formation of surface methoxy species by Brønsted acids at mild temperatures. This work proposes a microenvironment design strategy to manipulate the reaction routes inside zeolite channels with the assistance of nitromethane, realizes the surface methoxy species generat…

Potential-modulated orbital interactions determine domino CO/methanol selectivity for CO2 electroreduction on cobalt phthalocyanine.

Heterogenized cobalt phthalocyanine (hetero-CoPc) molecular catalysts exhibit domino CO/methanol selectivity during CO2 electroreduction. However, the origin of this selectivity is not well understood, impeding the strategic optimization for methanol generation. Here, we show potential-modulated orbital interaction mechanisms governing the selectivity in hetero-CoPc based on first-principles calculations with consideration of carbon support and electrochemical interfaces. Specifically, constant-potential orbital-resolved analyses reveal that electrons introduced by applied potentials initially…

Efficient Separation of Methanol-to-Olefins Products Using a Robust Polycatenated Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework.

The methanol-to-olefins process produces mixtures of ethylene and propylene, driving demand for high-performance separation materials. We present HOF-ZJNU-3, a hydrogen-bonded organic framework built from an expanded BTB (4,4',4″-benzene-1,3,5-triyl-tribenzoate) linker, featuring the highest catenation degree observed in BTB-based HOFs. This unique architecture confers good stability under solvent, pH, and thermal conditions. With optimally sized pores and aromatic-rich surfaces, HOF-ZJNU-3 demonstrates excellent propylene/ethylene separation potential, outperforming its parent frameworks (HOF…

The liquidus curve of aqueous methanol mixtures. The high-alcohol concentration region at standard pressure.

This work extends our previous simulation study on the water/methanol liquidus curve at low methanol concentrations [M. Martínez-Jiménez and A. L. Benavides, J. Chem. Phys. 157, 104502 (2022)]. We now explored methanol-rich mixtures that are located beyond the eutectic point, at p = 0.1 MPa. To our knowledge, the liquidus temperatures for these mixtures have not been obtained before with any simulation technique. In this case, the liquidus temperature curve characterizes the boundary between the liquid methanol/water mixture and a coexistence of a liquid mixture with the β-methanol solid. Dire…

Methanol feeding strategies for high-yield production of a collagen-based protein in Komagataella phaffii.

The recombinant production of extracellular matrix proteins is a promising approach for replacing animal-derived materials in biomedical applications. K. phaffii represents a favorable expression host because it combines the ability of higher eukaryotes for secreted protein production with the ability to grow to high cell densities on simple, low-cost media. Additionally, this well-studied host allows for tight control of recombinant protein expression using the methanol-inducible AOX1 promoter. In this study, different methanol feeding strategies were evaluated to optimize the expression of a…

TEMPO-Mediated Paired Electrosynthesis of Ethylene Glycol from Formaldehyde and Methanol at High Current Densities.

Herein, a paired electrosynthesis of ethylene glycol from formaldehyde and methanol facilitated by TEMPO is reported. The use of TEMPO accentuates formaldehyde production at the anode, providing additional formaldehyde into the cathodic coupling process. The reaction is performed in water/methanol solution in a simple undivided cell using sulfuric acid-treated graphite electrodes with industrially feasible current densities between 300 and 350 mA cm-2. Other components of the reaction are sodium chloride which is used as a supporting electrolyte and tributylmethylammonium chloride which raises…

Transcriptomic insights into methanol utilization in Pichia pastoris lacking AOX genes under co-feeding conditions.

The methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris (P. pastoris) exhibits remarkable capability for methanol-driven protein biosynthesis, positioning it as an attractive platform for carbon-neutral biomanufacturing utilizing methanol as a renewable feedstock. However, challenges arising from methanol metabolism, particularly the accumulation of toxic formaldehyde intermediates, significantly hinder efficient methanol biotransformation. To address this limitation, we implemented a metabolic engineering strategy involving dual knockout of alcohol oxidase genes (aox1 and aox2) combined with glycerol co-sub…

Embedded-Type Cu Nanoparticle with Largely Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Stability Toward Methanol Steam Reforming.

Hydrogen production through low-temperature methanol steam reforming (MSR) reaction plays a critical role in the development of new energy but remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a Cu/Zn(Ga)Ox catalyst, which is prepared via an interface reconstruction strategy. Interestingly, this catalyst is featured with a unique mortise-and-tenon structure: Cu nanoparticles are embedded into the Zn(Ga)Ox substrate, which ensures a stable Zn-O-Cu+-Ov-Gaδ + interface structure. The resulting Cu/Zn(Ga)Ox catalyst exhibits 99.3% CH3OH conversion with an H2 production rate of 124.6 µmol gcat -1 s-1 at …

Technoeconomic Analysis of Microwave-Assisted Dry Reforming Integrated with Chemical Looping for Production of Methanol.

Methanol is a key component in producing formaldehyde, acetic acid, and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and supports a wide array of industries, including plastics, textiles, and automotive. It also plays a growing role in renewable energy solutions. However, the conventional production of methanol involves steam reforming of methane, which is very energy-intensive and produces significant quantities of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. In this research, a chemical looping scheme is combined with dry reforming of natural gas in a novel microwave reactor to produce an industrial quantity of met…

Identification of overoxidizing and non-overoxidizing NAD-dependent methanol dehydrogenases and implications for synthetic methylotrophy.

Synthetic methylotrophy offers opportunities for sustainable chemical and biofuel production. While recently established methylotrophic E. coli can grow on methanol, undesirable formate accumulation occurs during growth and bioproduction. Here, we show that NAD-dependent methanol dehydrogenase Mdh2 from Cupriavidus necator inherently overoxidizes methanol to formate, a trait we find to be widespread among NAD-dependent Mdh enzymes. In contrast, Mdh/Mdh1 enzymes from Bacillus methanolicus exclusively oxidize methanol to formaldehyde without overoxidation, as we validate in vitro for Mdh Bm MGA3…

Energy management strategy for methanol hybrid commercial vehicles based on improved dung beetle algorithm optimization.

In order to solve the problem of poor adaptability and robustness of the rule-based energy management strategy (EMS) in hybrid commercial vehicles, leading to suboptimal vehicle economy, this paper proposes an improved dung beetle algorithm (DBO) optimized multi-fuzzy control EMS. First, the rule-based EMS is established by dividing the efficient working areas of the methanol engine and power battery. The Tent chaotic mapping is then used to integrate strategies of cosine, Lévy flight, and Cauchy Gaussian mutation, improving the DBO. This integration compensates for the traditional dung beetle…
