In this study the influence of toxic shock syndrome toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus on the organism of piglets of Minnesota race is presented. Animals were tested in two groups: conventional and gnotobiotic and they were given the toxin intradermally in two doses 10 and 100 micrograms/kg of body weight. It was shown that piglets are sensitive to the toxin which induced rise of body temperature, various clinical symptoms and in functional changes of several organs as shown by analytical studies. Minnesota became the fourth state to begin newborn screening (NBS) for X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) in 2017. As there is limited retrospective data available on NBS for X-ALD, we analyzed Minnesota's NBS results from the first year of screening. Over 317,000 tonnes of road salt (NaCl) are applied annually for road deicing in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA) of Minnesota. Although road salt is applied to increase driving safety, this practice influences environmental water quality. Thirteen lakes in the TCMA were studied over 46 months to determine if and how they respond to the seasonal applications of road salt. OBJECTIVE: To assess mortality in a population-based cohort of adults with a history of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA).
METHODS: The Rochester Epidemiology Project database was used to identify all cases of JRA diagnosed among Rochester, Minnesota residents under the age of 16 between January 1, 1960 and December 31, 1993. Fifty-seven patients in this cohort are now adults (ages 18-53 years, mean age 34.3 years), and this subgroup was contacted for a long-term followup study. The average length of followup from the time of diagnosis was 25.6 years.

Methadone client volunteers completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Hathaway & McKinley, 1967) and MMPI-2 (Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) on consecutive days. MMPI-2 T-scores were lower by a mean of 4.7 on the clinical scales; when 5 points were added to MMPI-2 T-scores the mean difference was 2.3. Rank order of subjects on scale T-scores was not significantly different between the two instruments. High-point similarity for clinically elevated profile pairs ranged from 61% to 92%, depending upon definition of similarity.

The concurrent validity of the College Adjustment Scales was assessed using comparison to the College Maladjustment Scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Inventory-2. Undergraduate students (N=56, 40 women, M age = 21.3 yr., 87.5% white, non-Hispanic) completed both tests. We describe a 70-year-old woman who underwent successful percutaneous Inoue antegrade-technique mitral valvuloplasty. Three months later, the patient developed right-sided heart failure. Red-backed voles (Clethrionomys gapperi) were live trapped in northern St. Louis County, Minnesota (USA), in late September and October 1988 and experimentally inoculated with Borrelia burgdorferi. Spirochetes were isolated from most animals 14 and 28 days following inoculation. Thus, red-backed voles exposed to B. burgdorferi were susceptible to infection and could be a reservoir host, along with chipmunks (Tamias striatus) and other small rodents, in areas where white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) populations are low. No evidence of clinical disease was noted in any infected voles.

This study presents the results of a 3-year follow-up of patients treated for flight anxiety via relaxation/desensitization. Noted differences between successfully and unsuccessfully treated patients are discussed as well as the long-range effectiveness of relaxation/desensitization. Higher levels of hostility, assessed by a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scale (Ho), have been associated with the incidence of coronary disease and mortality from coronary disease and other causes in two prospective studies. Three patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma complicated by previous Watkins transposition operations were treated at the University of Minnesota. Serotypes of 46 previously unclassified isolates of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from porcine tissues in the United States and serotypes of 31 isolates of the organism from porcine tissues received from Puerto Rico were determined. 27 women with rheumatoid arthritis had elevated depression and social introversion scores in the Minnesota multiple phasic personality inventory (MMPI) tests, whereas their somatic activity appeared reduced. A limited search for hantaviruses in lung and liver tissues of Sorex shrews (family Soricidae, subfamily Soricinae) revealed phylogenetically distinct hantaviruses in the masked shrew (Sorex cinereus) from Minnesota and in the dusky shrew (Sorex monticolus) from New Mexico and Colorado.
