Assessment of the reliability of measurements taken on digital orthodontic models obtained from scans of plaster models in laboratory scanners. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, digital models have become increasingly popular among orthodontists, both for clinical and scientific purposes. It is, therefore, crucial to appropriately investigate their reliability. To this date, however, there has been no scientific, statistical investigation of their reliability as compared to the traditional gold standard-plaster models in the form of a meta-analysis. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the reliability and reproducibility of measurements taken on digital orthodontic models obtained from scanning plaster models in laboratory scanners compared to measure

The deformable most-likely-point paradigm.

In this paper, we present three deformable registration algorithms designed within a paradigm that uses 3D statistical shape models to accomplish two tasks simultaneously: 1) register point features from previously unseen data to a statistically derived shape (e.g., mean shape), and 2) deform the statistically derived shape to estimate the shape represented by the point features. This paradigm, called the deformable most-likely-point paradigm, is motivated by the idea that generative shape models built from available data can be used to estimate previously unseen data. We developed three defor

Statistical analysis of the seasonal variation in demographic data.

There has been little agreement as to whether reproduction or similar demographic events occur seasonally and, especially, whether there is any universal seasonal pattern. One reason is that the seasonal pattern may vary in different populations and at different times. Another reason is that different statistical methods have been used. Every statistical model is based on certain assumed conditions and hence is designed to identify specific components of the seasonal pattern. Therefore, the statistical method applied should be chosen with due consideration. In this study we present, develop, a

ReMeDy: A Flexible Statistical Framework for Region-Based Detection of DNA Methylation Dysregulation.

Region-based epigenome-wide association studies have demonstrated improved statistical power and biological interpretability compared with probe-wise analyses of DNA methylation data. However, most existing region-based methods characterize methylation dysregulation primarily through changes in mean methylation levels associated with a phenotype of interest. Substantial evidence indicates that phenotype-associated methylation alterations may also manifest through changes in methylation variability or through joint shifts in mean and variability. Despite this, no existing statistical framework

A Note on Ordinal Modeling of Smoking Rate Data.

INTRODUCTION: This paper discusses statistical models for ordinal data that may be more appropriate for smoking rate outcomes than are models that assume continuous measurement and normality. Smoking rate outcomes often have distributions that make them inappropriate for many popular statistical models that assume normality, and are more appropriately considered ordinal outcomes. This article describes how the ordinal logistic regression model can be used to obtain estimates of means, and comparisons of means, for smoking rate outcomes. AIMS AND METHODS: Analyses of the daily smoking rate of

joineRML: a joint model and software package for time-to-event and multivariate longitudinal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Joint modelling of longitudinal and time-to-event outcomes has received considerable attention over recent years. Commensurate with this has been a rise in statistical software options for fitting these models. However, these tools have generally been limited to a single longitudinal outcome. Here, we describe the classical joint model to the case of multiple longitudinal outcomes, propose a practical algorithm for fitting the models, and demonstrate how to fit the models using a new package for the statistical software platform R, joineRML. RESULTS: A multivariate linear mixed su

Role of multi-layer tissue composition of musculoskeletal extremities for prediction of in vivo surface indentation response and layer deformations.

Emergent mechanics of musculoskeletal extremities (surface indentation stiffness and tissue deformation characteristics) depend on the underlying composition and mechanics of each soft tissue layer (i.e. skin, fat, and muscle). Limited experimental studies have been performed to explore the layer specific relationships that contribute to the surface indentation response. The goal of this study was to examine through statistical modeling how the soft tissue architecture contributed to the aggregate mechanical surface response across 8 different sites of the upper and lower extremities. A public

A Nonparametric Data-Fusion Approach for Identification and Estimation of Nonignorable Missing Data With Shadow Variable.

Missing data can pose fundamental challenges to statistical inference, with nonignorable missing or missing not at random (MNAR) presenting the most severe methodological difficulties. Despite substantial advances in MNAR inference methods, several limitations remain. These generally include interpretability issues, non-identifiability, unverifiable parametric assumptions, and reliance on external information for which clear practical guidance is often lacking-particularly in sensitivity and Bayesian methods. In this paper, motivated by a real-world COVID-19 dataset from the Centers for Diseas

Modeling tuberculosis transmission dynamics in Kazakhstan using SARIMA and SIR models.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly contagious disease that remains a global concern affecting numerous countries. Kazakhstan has been facing considerable challenges in TB prevention and treatment for decades. This study aims to understand TB transmission dynamics by developing and comparing statistical and deterministic models: Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) and the basic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR). TB data from 2014 to 2019 were collected from the Unified National Electronic Health System (UNEHS) using retrospective quantitative analysis. SARIMA models were ab

Accuracy in parameter estimation and simulation approaches for sample-size planning accounting for item effects.

The planning of sample size for research studies often focuses on obtaining a significant result given a specified level of power, significance, and an anticipated effect size. This planning requires prior knowledge of the study design and a statistical analysis to calculate the proposed sample size. However, there may not be one specific testable analysis from which to derive power (Silberzahn et al., Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, 1(3), 337356, 2018) or a hypothesis to test for the project (e.g., creation of a stimuli database). Modern power and sample size plann

Assigning Article-Level Themes in Bibliometric Analysis: Mode-Based Mapping Approach Using JMIR Aging Publications.

BACKGROUND: Although clustering techniques are commonly used in bibliometric analysis to identify research themes, few studies systematically assign these themes back to individual articles. This gap limits the interpretability of findings and hinders granular, article-level longitudinal analysis. OBJECTIVE: This study introduces the Theme Assignment Algorithm for Articles (TAAA), a data-driven framework designed to map clustered themes to individual publications. We demonstrate its utility by identifying dominant research patterns and thematic shifts within JMIR Aging. METHODS: TAAA was app

Stratification in small randomised clinical trials and analysis of covariance: Some simple theory and recommendations.

A simple device for balancing for a continuous covariate in clinical trials is to stratify by whether the covariate is above or below some target value, typically the predicted median. The object is to improve balance of the covariate and hence efficiency of the treatment estimate particularly if the trial is small, as may be the case if the disease in question is rare. This raises an issue as to which model should be used for modelling the effect of treatment on the outcome variable, Y. Should one fit, the stratum indicator, S, the continuous covariate, X, both or neither? When a covariate is

An evaluation of variable selection methods in competing risks with one rare event: a simulation study.

BACKGROUND: In the competing risk settings, the association of predictor variables with different event types is a crucial task. Accurate variable selection resolves the issue of confounding in research on causes and enables unbiased estimation of probabilities in studies on prognosis, but it becomes complicated when the disease or event of interest is rare. OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we aimed to evaluate the performance of penalization methods in rare conditions. METHODS: A variety of scenarios were used to compare the Fine and Gray, LASSO, Adaptive LASSO, SCAD, MCP, and stepwise Fine & Gray

Inference about the ratio of age-standardized rates between two overlapping populations.

We develop a robust bias-corrected method of inference about the ratio of age-standardized rates (RASR) for comparing the age-standardized rate (ASR) between a subpopulation and the whole population. Unlike previous methods, the proposed approach does not rely on the proportional age-distribution (PAD) assumption, which is often unrealistic in many situations. Like an existing approach, the method corrects for bias resulting from sampling errors when using sample-based population estimates, instead of census-based populations, as the denominators for estimating ASRs. This broadens the applicab

New Extension Odd Generalized Rayleigh-Nadarajah Haghighi Distribution with Application and Simulated Data.

BACKGROUND: Generating distributions from families is a classification system in the world of probability. Instead of having hundreds of isolated distributions, we groupd them into families based on their shared mathematical properties. This not only organizes our knowledge but also provides powerful tools for analyzing data and building effective statistical models. METHODS: The extended generalized Rayleigh-Nadarajah Haghighi (EOGRNH) distribution was introduced, and its basic statistical features were thoroughly studied. These features include important functions such as the cumulative fun

A Statistical Perspective on Transformers for Small Longitudinal Cohort Data.

Modeling of longitudinal cohort data typically involves complex temporal dependencies between multiple variables. There, the transformer architecture, which has been highly successful in language and vision applications, allows us to account for the fact that the most recently observed time points in an individual's history may not always be the most important for the immediate future. This is achieved by assigning attention weights to observations of an individual based on a transformation of their values. One reason why these ideas have not yet been fully leveraged for longitudinal cohort da

Power and sample-size estimation in human microbiome research.

Human microbiome research has become pivotal in advancing our understanding of complex diseases such as diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer. Much of this work relies on comparing microbial communities across health and disease states, or case-control cohorts, using high-throughput metagenomic sequencing. Yet the very nature of sequencing-derived microbiome data makes robust cohort design and power-based sample-size estimation unusually difficult. Unlike other omics, microbiome profiles are compositional, sparse, and often zero inflated, properties that complicate statistical model

Validating methods for inferring co-occurring diseases: a flexible framework for simulating synthetic data.

BACKGROUND: The validation of methods is an integral part of statistical research, defining conditions under which methods yield reliable results. Empirical validation requires a solid data basis to control and manage relevant characteristics like sample size, dimensionality, and underlying dependency structures. Real-world data often fails to meet these requirements, particularly in medical contexts where privacy regulations restrict availability. For this reason, synthetic data is an effective alternative for method validation. However, generating synthetic data is demanding when it must pre

What the general factor of psychological problems is-And is not.

Hundreds of published studies have advanced understanding of the hypothesized general factor of psychological problems, but confusion still surrounds the hypothesis. This partly results from critics conflating our hypotheses with those of other authors, but we have created confusion ourselves by stating two different general factor hypotheses, which we differentiate here. In the psychometric general factor hypothesis, the general factor is the term in bifactor models that quantifies the variance shared by all measured psychological problems, whereas two or more specific factors are defined by
