Production of Bacillus sphaericus strain 1593 primary powder on media made from locally obtainable Nigerian agricultural products.

Five media, formulated from dried cow blood, mineral salts, and seeds from four species of legumes, were assessed for growth, sporulation, and insecticidal properties of Bacillus sphaericus strain 1593. Bacterial powders, prepared from broth, were assayed against Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles gambiae, and Aedes aegypti. Good growth and sporulation were obtained with all the media. The highest number of viable cells and spores per mililitre (8.6 X 10(8) and 8.1 X 10(8] were obtained in media containing ground seeds of Vignia unguiculata, Voandzeia subterranean, and Arachis hypogea. All powd

[Skin flora, odor and malaria transmission].

Malaria, which is transmitted primarily by bites of female Anopheles mosquitoes, is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that poses a serious threat to human health. Host body odor is a key factor to attract Anopheles mosquitoes. Upon Plasmodium infection, host body odors change, leading to increased attractiveness to female Anopheles mosquitoes; however, the underlying mechanisms remain clear. A recent study reported remarkable changes of skin flora and volatile substances in mice following Plasmodium infections, and ethylbenzene was found to increase host attractiveness to mosquitoes, which p

The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana reduces instantaneous blood feeding in wild multi-insecticide-resistant Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes in Benin, West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases are still a major health risk in many developing countries, and the emergence of multi-insecticide-resis … wild mosquitoes. This behaviour modification indicates that B. bassiana could potentially be a new mosquito control tool effective at reducing disease transmission, although further field work in areas with filariasis transmission should be carried out to verify this. In addition, work targeting malaria vector mosquitoes should be carried out to see if these mosq …

Japanese encephalitis: Challenges and intervention opportunities in Nepal.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito borne zoonotic disease caused by JE virus (JEV). JE has been endemic in Terai region, the lowland plains of Nepal bordering India, since 1978. However, in recent years cases of JE has been continuously reported from high altitude zones of hills and mountains. Irrigated rice farming system, expanded pig husbandry practices, inadequate vaccine coverage, low level of public awareness and climate change favoring mosquito breeding in higher altitudes might be the probable risk factors for emergence and re-emergence of JE in Nepal. Repeated outbreak in endemi

Mosquito survey during West Nile virus outbreak 2012 in northeast Croatia.

During the August and September 2012, seven human cases of the West Nile neuro-invasive disease were reported in Croatia. Medical entomology research on a potential vectors during the outbreak was supported by the Ministry of Health. A mosquito survey has been done in 64 sites in three eastern Croatian counties (Osijek-Baranja County, Vukovar-Srijem county and in Brod-Posavina county). Dry ice baited CDC traps were used for mosquito sampling in a period from the 10th to 25th September 2012. A total of 1785 mosquitoes were collected and 5 species were determined. The most numerous species were

Behavioral risks for West Nile virus disease, northern Colorado, 2003.

In 2003, residents in 2 adjacent cities in northern Colorado (Loveland and Fort Collins) had severe outbreaks of human West Nile virus (WNV) disease. Unexpectedly, age-adjusted neuroinvasive disease rates were higher in Loveland (38.6 vs. 15.9 per 100,000), which had a more extensive mosquito control program and fewer mosquitoes. A survey was conducted to assess differences in personal protection and risk practices by each city's residents. During May and June 2004, a random-digit dial telephone survey was conducted among adults to assess personal protection behavioral practices used to preven…

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the Americas: a review of their interactions with the human population.

This paper describes the significant changes in the relationship between Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and the human population in the Americas from the 1800s to present. First, the history of the arrival of the mosquito, the consequent epidemics of yellow fever and dengue, and the eventual implication of the mosquito as vector is described. Second, the Pan American Health Organization's Aedes aegypti Eradication Program is discussed and the potential threat to the Americas of development of the dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS) is emphasized. Third, the limited efforts of th

Social and environmental risk factors for dengue in Delhi city: A retrospective study.

Global urbanization is leading to an inexorable spread of several major diseases that need to be stemmed. Dengue is one of these major diseases spreading in cities today, with its principal mosquito vector superbly adapted to the urban environment. Current mosquito control strategies are proving inadequate, especially in the face of such urbanisation and novel, evidence-based targeted approaches are needed. Through combined epidemiological and entomological approaches, we aimed to identify a novel sanitation strategy to alleviate the burden of dengue through how the dengue virus spreads throug…

Molecular xenomonitoring for identifying Plasmodium parasites and blood meal sources of mosquitoes in malaria endemic villages adjacent to the southern Rift Valley Lakes, South Ethiopia.

Detecting Plasmodium parasite DNA and host blood meals in the abdomens of fed mosquitoes enables timely decisions for effective malaria control. Hence, this study aimed to detect the Plasmodium parasite DNA and identify sources of blood meals in the abdomens of freshly fed Anopheles mosquitoes in South Ethiopia. A cross-sectional entomological survey was conducted in 12 malaria-endemic Kebeles near the southern Rift Valley Lakes, Abaya and Chamo, as a baseline for a trial evaluating house screening and/or ivermectin treatment for domestic animals to control malaria. Four hundred sixteen houses

Modeling the impact of sterile males on an Aedes aegypti population with optimal control.

We use partial differential equations to describe the dynamics of an Aedes aegypti mosquito population on an island, and the effects of a sterile male release. The model includes mosquito movement and an Allee effect to capture extinction events. We apply optimal control theory to identify the release strategy that eliminates the mosquitoes most rapidly, conditional on a limited availability of sterile males. The optimal solution for a single location is to initially release a substantial number of mosquitoes and to subsequently release fewer sterile males proportionally to the decreasing fema

Application of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction for detection of Rift Valley Fever viral antigen from mosquito.

A reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was applied to detect Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV) in Culex pipiens mosquito pools collected from Alexandria and Behira governorates of Egypt (50 pools each). All mosquito pools were subjected to double sandwich enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique to detect RVF viral antigen. Out of all 100 mosquito pools, only 18(18%) were positive by ELISA, 10(20%) out of 50 pools were positive in Behira governorate and 8(16%) were positive in Alexandria governorate. All positive samples (18) in addition to two negative samples (one

Synthetic miRNAs induce dual arboviral-resistance phenotypes in the vector mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Mosquito-borne arboviruses are responsible for recent dengue, chikungunya, and Zika pandemics. The yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, plays an important role in the transmission of all three viruses. We developed a miRNA-based approach that results in a dual resistance phenotype in mosquitoes to dengue serotype 3 (DENV-3) and chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses. The target viruses are from two distinct arboviral families and the antiviral mechanism is designed to function through the endogenous miRNA pathway in infected mosquitoes. Challenge experiments showed reductions in viral transmission effic

The ability of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to survive and transmit infective larvae of Brugia pahangi over successive blood meals.

The mortality of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes increased; immediately following a blood meal containing microfilariae of Brugia pahangi, when infective larvae began to migrate out of the flight muscles and when infective larvae were lost from the mosquitoes during a blood meal. When infective mosquitoes took a second blood meal 86.2% of the infective larvae escaped from their bodies. However, only 50.3% escaped when mosquitoes fed through a thin layer of cotton. Infective larvae in the abdomen of the mosquitoes stood the least chance of escaping from the insects. When infective mosquitoes were offe

The efficacy of commercially available essential oil-based candles as spatial repellents against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes - do they actually repel?

Spatial mosquito repellents contain volatile compounds that disrupt mosquito host seeking behavior. Some essential oils have been shown to be effective spatial repellents against biting insects. In this study, we acquired seven batches of commercially available candles containing mixtures of essential oils. Six of these candle labels claim that they repel mosquitoes. We used a taxis cage assay to evaluate the spatial repellency against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes of these and two control candles without essential oils. We used Headspace Solid-phase Microextraction Gas Chromotography-Mass Spectrom

Mosquito-based survey for the detection of flaviviruses and filarial nematodes in Aedes albopictus and other anthropophilic mosquitoes collected in northern Italy.

In order to optimize resources, an assay allowing the detection of several etiological agents would be useful. This paper describes a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay for the parallel detection of different pathogens in mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae). The assay combines the analysis of both RNA and DNA, hence allowing the detection of both flaviviruses (Flaviviridae: Flavivirus) and filarial nematodes (Spirurida: Onchocercidae). The sensitivity of diagnostic assay for both flavivirus and nematode infections was tested by means of spiked samples and resulted adequate for the purpose
