Drug treatment of motion sickness: scopolamine alone and combined with ephedrine in real and simulated situations.

In two placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized trials scopolamine (0.3 mg) alone or combined with ephedrine (25 mg) was tested for its effectiveness in the prevention of seasickness during 24 h at sea and of motion sickness in rotating chair tests in a laboratory. Scopolamine was effective both alone and in combination with ephedrine, which supports the hypothesis on central cholinergic overactivity in the pathogenesis of motion sickness. Ephedrine did not markedly increase the effectiveness of scopolamine. Side-effects were slight and did not disturb the operating ability of the voluntee…

Evaluating fluid-filled glasses for motion sickness symptom mitigation in a computer-assisted rehabilitation environment (CAREN).

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness arises from sensory conflict between visual, vestibular, and somatosensory inputs, causing nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. Non-pharmacological interventions are underexplored despite their potential for accessibility and safety. This study evaluated (1) Computer-Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) as a novel tool to induce motion sickness and (2) the efficacy of fluid-filled motion sickness glasses which create an artificial horizon to counteract peripheral visual-vestibular mismatch and reduce symptoms. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted…

Effects of anticipatory auditory cues and non-driving related tasks on motion sickness in automated vehicles.

In the context of highly automated vehicles, motion comfort deserves crucial attention for their widespread adoption. Passengers of automated vehicles are prone to motion sickness from diminished cognizance of the driving environment, and from engaging in non-driving related tasks (NDRTs). Awareness about upcoming motion and mental distraction from NDRTs have the potential to mitigate motion sickness. The current study used a motion-based driving simulator where 31 participants performed easy and hard versions of an NDRT in the presence and absence of spatialized anticipatory auditory cues dis…

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation of cerebellum relieves motion sickness by reducing the release of acetylcholine.

Motion sickness (MS) is a condition caused by conflicts between motion sensors and past visual or motion memories, leading to discomfort with symptoms like hypolocomotion, low body temperature, poor appetite, and nausea. Previous studies have shown that the cerebellum is closely related to the occurrence of MS. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the potential therapeutic effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of cerebellum on MS. The motion sickness index and the rotarod motor performance test were used to assess the motion sickness symptoms and motor learning in mic…

Assessment of Motion Sickness Associated with Motor Amplification in a Low-Cost Virtual Reality Rehabilitation System.

Effective rehabilitation is critical for individuals with motor deficits, such as following a stroke or brain injury. Although high doses of … tation implementation and test whether motor amplification leads to an increase in visually induced motion sickness experienced by individuals without disabilities. We find that motor amplification does not elevate reported motion sickness levels, suggesting that low-cost VR systems may enable increased access to individualized and guided motor rehabilitation.

Can acceleration-coded vibrations help alleviate passenger motion sickness? Investigation in stop-and-go passenger rides.

With the deployment of high levels of vehicle automation, motion sickness is expected to become more prevalent in road transportation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of haptic motion cueing as a countermeasure to motion sickness. During a stop-and-go ride in an electric vehicle, vibrotactile cues were generated in the seat backrest as an intervention. Grounded in the neural mismatch theory, this approach is based on a recovery hypothesis, proposing that providing somatosensory information consistent with vehicle motion forces can facilitate the restoration of sensory concordance…

Motion sickness resistant people showed suppressed steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) under vection-inducing stimulation.

UNLABELLED: Visual stimulation can generate illusory self-motion perception (vection) and cause motion sickness among susceptible people, but the underlying neural mechanism is not fully understood. In this study, SSVEP responses to visual stimuli presented in different parts of the visual field are examined in individuals with different susceptibilities to motion sickness to identify correlates of motion sickness. Alpha band SSVEP data were collected from fifteen university students when they were watching roll-vection-inducing visual stimulation containing: (1) an achromatic checkerboard fli…

A novel method for reducing motion sickness susceptibility through training visuospatial ability - A two-part study.

Everyone can be susceptible to motion sickness (except those with complete loss of labyrinth function) and around one in three are known to be servery susceptible. Motion sickness can be experienced in many domains, including car travel, on a boat, using virtual reality headsets and simulator use amongst others. It is expected that due to potential designs and use cases, self-driving cars will increase motion sickness onset likelihood and severity for many car travellers. Besides medication, there are limited methods through which one can actively reduce their motion sickness susceptibility. T…

Correlations between individual susceptibility to visually induced motion sickness and decaying time constant of after-nystagmus.

This study examines the correlations between optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN) parameters and individual susceptibility to visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). Twenty-seven participants were exposed to vertical black-and-white stripes drifting along the yaw axis at 60° per second for 30 min to collect individual VIMS data (Phase 1). Two weeks after the exposure, OKANs were measured (Phase 2). 19 out of 27 participants (i.e., 70%) exhibited consistent OKAN patterns. Significant correlations between the time constants of OKAN and levels of VIMS experienced by the same viewers were found. Fo…

Sex differences in visual performance and postural sway precede sex differences in visually induced motion sickness.

Motion sickness is more common among women than among men. Previous research has shown that standing body sway differs between women and men. In addition, research has shown that postural sway differs between individuals who experience visually induced motion sickness and those who do not and that those differences exist before exposure to visual motion stimuli. We asked whether sex differences in postural sway would be related to sex differences in the incidence of visually induced motion sickness. We measured unperturbed standing body sway before participants were exposed to visual motion st…

A preliminary study of MR sickness evaluation using visual motion aftereffect for advanced driver assistance systems.

Mixed Reality (MR) technologies have recently been explored in many areas of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) such as medicine, manufacturing, entertainment and education. However MR sickness, a kind of motion sickness is caused by sensory conflicts between the real world and virtual world. The purpose of this paper is to find out a new evaluation method of motion and MR sickness. This paper investigates a relationship between the whole-body vibration related to MR technologies and the motion aftereffect (MAE) phenomenon in the human visual system. This MR environment is modeled after advanced dr…

Motion sickness susceptibility associated with visually induced postural instability and cardiac autonomic responses in healthy subjects.

CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the hypothesis that postural sway and autonomic responses to moving visual stimuli may be associated with motion sickness susceptibility. Characteristics of the cardiac sympathovagal balance during exposure to provocative stimulation may be a marker of individual susceptibility to motion sickness. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between postural and autonomic responses to a simulated visual motion environment and reported susceptibility to motion sickness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen healthy subjects were exposed to sinusoidally oscillating visual mot…

Eye movements to yaw, pitch, and roll about vertical and horizontal axes: adaptation and motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: In the search for parameters to predict motion sickness that can be measured in the laboratory, we performed a longitudinal investigation in aviators. Since the vestibular system is involved in the generation of motion sickness as well as eye movements, vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) parameters seemed relevant. We investigated three topics: 1) the effect of axis orientation and its orientation to gravity on the VOR; 2) changes in VOR parameters depending on flight experience; and 3) differences in VOR parameters in aircrew with high and low susceptibility to motion sickness. HYPOTH…

Frequency effect of 0.35-1.0 Hz horizontal translational oscillation on motion sickness and the somatogravic illusion.

BACKGROUND: Low frequency translational oscillation can provoke motion sickness in land vehicles, ships and aircraft. HYPOTHESIS: Nauseogenicity should decrease towards the higher frequencies. METHODS: Some 12 subjects were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (3.6 m.s-2 peak) at four different frequencies 0.35, 0.50, 0.70, and 1.00 Hz, at 1-week intervals, latin square order. Subjects were seated in the upright position; motion was through the head-body X-axis. Motion was stopped (motion endpoint) at moderate nausea or after 30 min. RESULTS: The proportion of subjects experiencing moder…

"Torso rotation" experiments; 1: Adaptation to motion sickness does not correlate with changes in VOR gain.

Following a 30-minute exposure to an unusual motor strategy called "Torso Rotation" (TR), the signs and symptoms of motion sickness appear along with perceptual illusions during movement, gaze and postural instability, and a significantly reduced vestibulo-ocular response (VOR) gain. With repeated exposure to TR, the motion sickness disappears and gaze instability seems to be reduced. Is this apparent improvement in gaze stability associated with a reduction of the transient change in VOR gain? Motion sickness (subjective questionnaire) and VOR gain (passive step rotations in darkness) were me…

"Torso rotation" experiments; 2: Gaze stability during voluntary head movements improves with adaptation to motion sickness.

With repeated exposure to TR, motion sickness symptoms disappear and gaze instability seems reduced, but without any concomitant change in VOR gain. Is the reduction in gaze instability a perceptual illusion or a real, measurable phenomenon? Velocity gain (eye velocity/ head velocity) was evaluated during voluntar…
