The myogenic regulatory factor MRF4 is highly expressed in adult skeletal muscle but its function is unknown. Here we show that Mrf4 knockdown in adult muscle induces hypertrophy and prevents denervation-induced atrophy. This effect is accompanied by increased protein synthesis and widespread activation of muscle-specific genes, many of which are targets of MEF2 transcription factors. We reviewed a total of 1,432 patients diagnosed with cutaneous herpes zoster at Hyogo College of Medicine Hospital between 1989 and 1997 for epidemiologic assessment and outcome in patients with zoster paralysis referred for rehabilitation. Four patients with muscular pain, fasciculations, contractures or cramps are presented. Evidence of peripheral nerve involvement was revealed by electromyography and nerve conduction studies. Muscle biopsy showed mild signs of denervation and reinnervation and, at electron microscopy, dilatations of terminal cisternae were found. All patients showed a remarkable improvement after therapy with diphenylhydantoin or carbamazepine. Muscle biopsy specimens of 20 full-term neonates (13 surgical and seven necropsy specimens) with clinical evidence of neuromuscular disease were studied to determine the diagnostic usefulness of this procedure in the newborn. Focal muscle contracture in the limb following sytemic administration of depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents have been demonstrated experimentally with transection or crush injury of the nerve, but has rarely been observed clinically in patients with partial peripheral nerve injury. PURPOSE: The myotoxic drug doxorubicin can treat blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm permanently when injected directly into the eyelid of patients. One side effect of this treatment is the dose-related occurrence of injury to the skin overlying the injection site. The purpose of this study was to determine if injection of the immunosuppressive agent cyclosporin into rabbit eyelids before doxorubicin treatment could reduce the occurrence of injury to the overlying skin and to determine the effect of cyclosporin pretreatment on doxorubicin-induced muscle fiber loss.
