Effects of nicotine on rat sternohyoid muscle contractile properties.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a major clinical disorder characterised by recurring episodes of pharyngeal collapse during sleep. At present, there remains no satisfactory treatment for OSA. Pharmacological therapies as a potential treatment for the disorder are an attractive option and include agents that increase the contractility of the pharyngeal muscles. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of nicotine on upper airway muscle contractile properties. In vitro isometric contractile properties were determined using strips of rat sternohyoid muscle in physiological salt s

Fatigue is a relevant outcome in patients with myasthenia gravis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with myasthenia gravis often experience fatigue, but its effect on quality of life (QoL) is underestimated, and fatigue is rarely measured in clinical trials. METHODS: Two hundred fifty-seven myasthenic patients completed the Neuro-QoL-Fatigue and measures of disease severity and QoL. We studied the relationship between fatigue and clinical and demographic variables. Finally, we studied the responsiveness of the Neuro-QoL-Fatigue in 95 patients receiving treatments for myasthenia and estimated the minimal important difference (MID). RESULTS: Fatigue correlated with gre

Walking Stability and Kinematic Variability Following Motor Fatigue Induced by Incline Treadmill Walking.

Detecting motor fatigue during rigorous activities is essential for preventing injuries, falls, and over-exertion. While research has focused on developing fatigue indices using motion capture or wearable sensors, the method of inducing fatigue can impact movement patterns differently. This study compared the effects of whole-body motor fatigue induced by incline treadmill walking with localized fatigue induced by leg presses and isolated ankle movements, as investigated in our prior study. Twenty healthy young participants walked at 1.25 m/s for 5 min before (PRE) and after (POST) motor fatig

Fatigue-Related Changes in Running Technique and Mechanical Variables After a Maximal Incremental Test in Recreational Runners.

Understanding the changes in running mechanics caused by fatigue is essential to assess its impact on athletic performance. Changes in running biomechanics after constant speed conditions are well documented, but the adaptive responses after a maximal incremental test are unknown. We compared the spatiotemporal, joint kinematics, elastic mechanism, and external work parameters before and after a maximal incremental treadmill test. Eighteen recreational runners performed 2-minute runs at 8 km·h-1 before and after a maximal incremental test on a treadmill. Kinematics, elastic parameters, and ext

The acute impact of resistance training on fatigue in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis.

Fatigue is the most prevalent symptom among patients with sarcoidosis, and skeletal muscle dysfunction is a common clinical feature, making resistance training (RT) a recommended treatment strategy. Despite lacking knowledge regarding whether high-intensity RT will aggravate fatigue, low to moderate-intensity is routinely used even if the evidence for this protocol to improve muscle strength is inconclusive. This study aimed to investigate whether one single session of high-intensity RT induces a higher increase in fatigue than one single session of moderate-intensity RT. In this randomized cr

Do Fast Bowlers Fatigue in Cricket? A Paradox Between Player Anecdotes and Quantitative Evidence.

The manifestations of fatigue during fast bowling in cricket were systematically evaluated using subjective reports by cricket experts and quantitative data published from scientific studies. Narratives by international players and team physiotherapists were sourced from the Internet using criteria for opinion-based evidence. Research articles were evaluated for high-level fast bowlers who delivered 5- to 12-over spells with at least 1 quantitative fatigue measure. Anecdotes indicate that a long-term loss of bowling speed, tiredness, mental fatigue, and soreness occur. Scientific research show

Effect of carbonic anhydrase III inhibition on substrate utilization and fatigue in rat soleus.

Carbonic anhydrase III (CA III; EC 4.2.1.1) is the most abundant cytosolic enzyme in type I skeletal muscle fibers. We have previously shown that inhibiting the CA III activity of type I muscle can influence fatigability. Our goal was to test the hypothesis that the influence on fatigability of CA III inhibition is linked to an increased utilization of carbohydrates. Rat soleus muscles were incubated in vitro in a physiological solution with or without CA inhibitor (methazolamide, 1 mM) and submitted to a fatigue protocol. When the bathing solution contained glucose, the muscles incubated with

Neuromuscular fatigue after a ski skating marathon.

The aim of this study was to characterize neuromuscular fatigue in knee extensor muscles after a marathon skiing race (mean +/- SD duration = 159.7 +/- 17.9 min). During the 2 days preceding the event and immediately after, maximal percutaneous electrical stimulations (single twitch, 0.5-s tetanus at 20 and 80 Hz) were applied to the femoral nerve of 11 trained skiers. Superimposed twitches were also delivered during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) to determine maximal voluntary activation (% VA). EMG was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle. MVC decreased with fatigue from 171.7 +/-

Repeated hyperbaric oxygen exposure accelerates fatigue and impairs SR-calcium release in mice.

Breathing hyperoxic gas is common in diving and accelerates fatigue after prolonged and repeated exposure. The mechanism(s) remain unknown but may be related to increased oxidants that interfere with skeletal muscle calcium trafficking or impaired aerobic ATP production. To determine these possibilities, C57BL/6J mice were exposed to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) for 4 h on three consecutive days or remained in room air. Postfinal exposure, fatigue was determined by grip strength and run-to-exhaustion tests. Other measurements included indices of oxidant stress and antioxidant defenses, mitochondri
