[Kinematic magnetic resonance tomography in functional disorders of joints and vertebral articulations].

Imaging studies of peripheral joints and of vertebral junctions are of major importance in the diagnosis of many degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Radiograms with flexion and extension views are regarded as standard for diagnosing abnormalities of the spine, the patello-femoral joint, and other articulations. With magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), kinematic studies can be performed analogously. With high gradient field strengths and in-phase and opposed-phase gradient echo sequences it is possible to study the motion of joints continuously. First results show that this techn

Anatomic issues related to cervical and lumbosacral radiculopathy.

The anatomy of cervical and lumbar spinal nerves is well established. Knowledge of the normal and pathoanatomy of impingement of these roots is helpful in the diagnosis of radiculopathy in many cases. Frequently, symptoms and signs do not correlate with expected anatomical patterns. Variations of nerve roots, spinal nerves, and plexuses occur commonly. Neuroanatomical anomalies and musculoskeletal abnormalities account for many of the variations seen with unexpected radicular patterns. Unfortunately, the delineation of segmental innervation has been achieved by several different methods and de…

Imaging of musculoskeletal disorders in children.

A review of the year's literature on musculoskeletal disorders in infants and children includes many advances in imaging principles, especially MR imaging pulse sequences. We have not attempted to review these advances because the principles are essentially the same in children as in adults. We have confined this review to several topics including the importance of differentiating the findings in osteogenesis imperfecta from those in the abused child, limb-lengthening procedures in infants and children, the treatment of slipped upper femoral capital epiphysis, spinal anomalies, and skeletal ab

Diabetic thoracic radiculopathy: electrodiagnostic study.

We investigated the diagnostic value of electromyographic (EMG) examination of the anterior abdominal wall muscles (AWMS) in thoracic radiculopathy and compared it with examination of thoracic paraspinal muscles (TPSM). Technically, examination of AWMS was much easier compared to TPSM. In eight patients with thoracic diabetic radiculopathy at the level of T7-T12, AWMS was abnormal in all and was considered to be diagnostic, whereas AWMS was normal in diabetic lumbar radiculopathy, patients with diabetes mellitus without radiculopathy, patients with unspecified gastrointestinal pain, and patien

Musculoskeletal adverse events reported post-hepatitis B vaccination in the vaccine adverse event reporting system.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major cause of chronic liver disease. While the hepatitis B vaccine has been proven effective in preventing HBV infection, concerns regarding Events Supposedly Attributable to Vaccination or Immunization (ESAVI) persist. This study aims to utilize the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database to explore potential associations between the hepatitis B vaccine and musculoskeletal system AEs, providing a scientific basis for vaccine safety evaluations. METHODS: This study analyzed VAERS data from 1990 to 2024, focusing on 76,887 reports ass

Nonspecific pain is a marker for hypovitaminosis D in patients undergoing evaluation for sleep disorders: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to test the hypothesis that serum vitamin D levels are abnormally low in sleep clinic patients admitting to chronic nonspecific musculoskeletal pain and to assess the associated risk factors. A secondary purpose was to identify a clinical biomarker for vitamin D deficiency. METHODS: We enrolled 153 consecutive patients who admitted to the presence of chronic nonspecific musculoskeletal pain during a comprehensive sleep evaluation at a specialist sleep medicine clinic within an academic center. Venous blood sampling was performed for de

Do magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities of the non-dominant wrist correlate with ulnar-sided wrist pain in elite tennis players?

OBJECTIVE: Ulnar-sided injuries of the non-dominant wrist are common in elite tennis players that use the double-handed backhand technique. This study aimed to define the relationship between ulnar-sided wrist pain in symptomatic and asymptomatic elite tennis players, and the presence of abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen symptomatic tennis players, 14 asymptomatic tennis players, and 12 healthy controls who did not play tennis, were analyzed prospectively, after undergoing MRI of their non-dominant wrist. Five anatomical regions were analyzed,

The impact of COVID-19 on soccer players' health: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Despite growing research, the health effects of COVID-19 on soccer players remain poorly integrated. This meta-analytic review synthesized evidence across competitive levels and pandemic phases to characterize the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection and pandemic-related restrictions. The study adhered to PRISMA 2020 and Cochrane standards, with searches conducted in PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science. Eligibility criteria followed the P.E.C.O.S. framework. From 6,048 records screened, nine studies (>1,525 players from Tiers 1-5) met the inclusion criteria. These observational investig

Sex-specific response of intramuscular fat to diet-induced obesity in rats.

Metabolic abnormalities associated with excess adiposity in obesity contribute to many noncommunicable diseases, including sarcopenic obesity. Sarcopenic obesity is the loss of muscle mass coupled with excess fat mass and fatty infiltrations in muscle tissue called myosteatosis. A diet-induced obesity model was developed to study fat infiltration in muscle tissue. Only male rats have been considered in these investigations neglecting that female rats might respond differently. The objective of this study was to determine if the response to diet-induced obesity can be generalized to both sexes,

Use of Oral Supplements and Topical Adjuvants for Isotretinoin-Associated Side Effects: A Narrative Review.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit with a multifactorial etiology and is one of the most common conditions treated by dermatologists and primary care physicians. Within an extensive and evolving treatment landscape, oral isotretinoin has demonstrated efficacy for treatment of severe, recalcitrant acne. Several side effects of isotretinoin have been reported, including laboratory abnormalities, mucocutaneous, and musculoskeletal effects, which may reduce compliance and patient satisfaction with treatment. In this narrative review, we aim to review the efficacy and

Imaging features of musculoskeletal tuberculosis.

The purpose of this article is to review the imaging characteristics of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. Skeletal tuberculosis represents one-third of all cases of tuberculosis occurring in extrapulmonary sites. Hematogenous spread from a distant focus elsewhere in the body is the cornerstone in the understanding of imaging features of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. The most common presentations are tuberculous spondylitis, arthritis, osteomyelitis, and soft tissue involvement. The diagnostic value of the different imaging techniques, which include conventional radiography, CT, and MR imaging, are

Sonography of the musculoskeletal system in dogs and cats.

Sonography of the musculoskeletal system in dogs and cats was undertaken to evaluate the application of this imaging procedure in orthopedics. In most of the patients a 7.5 MHz linear transducer was used because of its flat application surface and its resolving power. The evaluation of bone by sonography is limited, but sonography can provide addition information regarding the bone surface and surrounding soft tissue. Ultrasound is valuable for assessing joint disease. Joint effusion, thickening of the joint capsule and cartilage defects can be identified sonographically. It is also possible t

A novel variant in BMPR1B causes acromesomelic dysplasia Grebe type in a consanguineous Moroccan family: Expanding the phenotypic and mutational spectrum of acromesomelic dysplasias.

Acromesomelic dysplasia Grebe type (AMD Grebe type) is an autosomal recessive trait characterized by short stature, shortened limbs and malformations of the hands and feet. It is caused by variants in the growth differentiation factor 5 (GDF5) or, in rare cases, its receptor, the bone morphogenetic protein receptor-1B (BMPR1B). Here, we report a novel homozygous BMPR1B variant causing AMD Grebe type in a consanguineous Moroccan family with two affected sibs from BRO Biobank. Remarkably, the affected individuals showed additional features including bilateral simian creases, lumbar hyperlordosis

Adult patient diagnosed with NADSYN1 associated congenital NAD deficiency and analysis of NAD levels to be published in: European Journal of Medical Genetics.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is an essential cosubstrate/coenzyme in multiple cellular redox processes and a substrate in several non-redox reactions. NADSYN1 encodes NAD synthetase 1, an enzyme in the NAD de novo synthesis pathway and the Preiss-Handler pathway, and biallelic pathogenic variants causes NAD deficiency associated with vertebral, cardiac, renal and limb defects. Szot et al. and Kortbawi et al. have reported a total of seven patients with NADSYN1 associated congenital NAD deficiency disorder with the oldest patient being seven years old. PATIENT DATA: We

Relationship between K-line distance and surgical outcome in cases of laminoplasty for cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament.

Although previous studies indicate that changes in cervical alignment after laminoplasty and dynamic factors influence surgical outcomes of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), the relationship between the surgical outcomes, the distance between the kyphosis-line (K-line) and OPLL, and dynamic factors have not yet been quantitatively evaluated. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the relationship between ΔK-line distance and surgical outcomes in cases of laminoplasty for OPLL of the cervical spine. We retrospectively reviewed 46 consecutive patients

Further characterization of Borjeson-Forssman-Lehmann syndrome in females due to de novo variants in PHF6.

While inherited hemizygous variants in PHF6 cause X-linked recessive Borjeson-Forssman-Lehmann syndrome (BFLS) in males, de novo heterozygous variants in females are associated with an overlapping but distinct phenotype, including moderate to severe intellectual disability, characteristic facial dysmorphism, dental, finger and toe anomalies, and linear skin pigmentation. By personal communication with colleagues, we assembled 11 additional females with BFLS due to variants in PHF6. We confirm the distinct phenotype to include variable intellectual disability, recognizable facial dysmorphism an
