Ontogenetic changes in jaw-muscle architecture facilitate durophagy in the turtle Sternotherus minor.

Differential scaling of musculoskeletal traits leads to differences in performance across ontogeny and ultimately determines patterns of resource use during development. Because musculoskeletal growth of the feeding system facilitates high bite-force generation necessary to overcome the physical constraints of consuming more durable prey, durophagous taxa are well suited for investigations of the scaling relationships between musculoskeletal growth, bite-force generation and dietary ontogeny. To elucidate which biomechanical factors are responsible for allometric changes in bite force and duro

Global, regional, and national burden of other musculoskeletal disorders, 1990-2020, and projections to 2050: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders include more than 150 different conditions affecting joints, muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and the spine. To capture all health loss from death and disability due to musculoskeletal disorders, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) includes a residual musculoskeletal category for conditions other than osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, low back pain, and neck pain. This category is called other musculoskeletal disorders and includes, for example, systemic lupus erythematosus and spondylopathies. We provide upda

Total-Body PET Imaging of Musculoskeletal Disorders.

Imaging of musculoskeletal disorders, including arthritis, infection, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and malignancies, is often limited when using conventional modalities such as radiography, computed tomography (CT), and MR imaging. As a result of recent advances in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) instrumentation, total-body PET/CT offers a longer axial field-of-view, higher geometric sensitivity, and higher spatial resolution compared with standard PET systems. This article discusses the potential applications of total-body PET/CT imaging in the assessment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Cone beam CT: non-dental applications.

Initially cone beam CT was almost exclusively used to perform dental radiology. However, the first generation CBCT systems were later increasingly used to study sinuses, facial and nose fractures, temporomandibular joints etc. 3D-cephalometric head and neck studies became possible once CBCT systems were available that allowed scanning of the complete head. For this purpose a double rotation technique with stitching of the resulting two data sets was needed. CBCT systems on which the rotation could be stopped were needed to perform dynamic swallow or pharyngography studies. The advent of more p

[The immediate and late results of radiation effects on the occurrence of congenital defects in the locomotor apparatus based on screening data on newborns in the maternity hospitals of the city of Kiev].

On the basis of screening of 15939 newborns at the maternity homes of Kiev after the accident at the Chernobyl atomic station it was found that the number of children with congenital malformation of the locomotor apparatus in 1991-1992 increased by 28.7% as compared with the data of the first postaccident years (1986-1987). Congenital pathology of the hip joint (dysplasia in average 23.5 per 1000 births, hip dislocation 3.6:1000) and foot deformity (7.9:1000) had the highest incidence with a tendency to increase at the latest years.

Musculoskeletal complications of acromegaly: what radiologists should know about early manifestations.

The purpose of this article is to summarise the early musculoskeletal complications of acromegaly. Some of the early signs of acromegaly may be evaluated by the musculoskeletal radiologist. In the early stage of disease, peripheral nerve enlargement associated with carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome and thickening of retinacula, such as A1 pulley in trigger finger, represent the features that may be seen by radiologists and are worthy of an endocrinological evaluation. Due to the insidious nature of the disease, the diagnosis of acromegaly is significantly delayed. Few and nonsp

A Review of Recent Advances in Natural Polymer-Based Scaffolds for Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering.

The musculoskeletal (MS) system consists of bone, cartilage, tendon, ligament, and skeletal muscle, which forms the basic framework of the human body. This system plays a vital role in appropriate body functions, including movement, the protection of internal organs, support, hematopoiesis, and postural stability. Therefore, it is understandable that the damage or loss of MS tissues significantly reduces the quality of life and limits mobility. Tissue engineering and its applications in the healthcare industry have been rapidly growing over the past few decades. Tissue engineering has made sig

[Ocular manifestations of Rheumatic diseases].

Pain in the musculoskeletal system and in the joints is what comes to mind first when people talk about rheumatic diseases. However, rheumatic diseases are multisystem disorders that can affect every organ system. Therefore, ocular manifestations are common and can occur in almost every rheumatic disease. On the one hand, they can even precede musculoskeletal manifestations. On the other hand, they can remain unrecognized without a thorough ophthalmologic examination in some disease entities. Consequently, a close cooperation between medical specialties is warranted, to prevent permanent impai…

Genetic Pleiotropy of Bone-Related Phenotypes: Insights from Osteoporosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We summarize recent evidence on the shared genetics within and outside the musculoskeletal system (mostly related to bone density and osteoporosis). RECENT FINDINGS: Osteoporosis is determined by an interplay between multiple genetic and environmental factors. Significant progress has been made regarding its genetic background revealing a number of robustly validated loci and respective pathways. However, pleiotropic factors affecting bone and other tissues are not well understood. The analytical methods proposed to test for potential associations between genetic variants a…

Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis: Pathophysiology and Imaging Findings.

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) represents approximately 15% of all TB infections. It is difficult to diagnose on the basis of imaging characteristics and clinical symptoms, and biopsy is required in many cases. Radiologists must be aware of the imaging findings of extrapulmonary TB to identify the condition in high-risk patients, even in the absence of active pulmonary infection. In extrapulmonary TB, the lymphatic system is most frequently affected. The presence of necrotic lymph nodes and other organ-specific imaging features increases the diagnostic probability of extrapulmonary TB. Disse

Addressing the growing burden of musculoskeletal diseases in the ageing US population: challenges and innovations.

The prevalence of musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and rheumatoid arthritis is rising sharply with global ageing, increasing disability rates among older adults (aged ≥60 years), diminishing quality of life, and burdening health-care systems. Current musculoskeletal care for older adults faces multiple limitations, including comorbidities, frailty, and fragmented care. High osteoarthritis prevalence in individuals older than 55 years, the mounting economic burden of osteoporotic fractures, the growing concern of muscle mass decline, and insufficient gu
