We present a case of severe orbital myiasis caused by Osteris ovis, also known as sheep nasal botfly which is an uncommon manifestation of maggot infestation. Our patient was successfully treated with oral as well as topical ivermectin. The experience of ivermectin as an anti-parasitic agent in the treatment of orbital myiasis, although a known entity, is still limited among medical professionals including ophthalmologists. Thus, we would like to highlight the role of oral ivermectin as an anti-parasitic agent in the treatment of orbital myiasis facilitating the removal of maggots; thus, precl…

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to report an unusual form of penile cancer presentation associated with myiasis infestation, treatment options and outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 10 patients with suspected malignant neoplasm of the penis associated with genital myiasis infestation. Diagnostic assessment was conducted through clinical history, physical examination, penile biopsy, larvae identification and computerized tomography scan of the chest, abdomen and pelvis. Clinical and pathological staging was done according to 2002 TNM classification system. Radical inguinal lympha…

Myiasis, infestation of live human and vertebrate animals by larvae, can complicate ulcers and open wounds. Although myiasis occurs in neglected erosions of pemphigus, such a complication is not documented in the literature. Herein, we report a case of myiasis complicating pemphigus vulgaris and describe its dermatoscopic features.

Cutaneous myiasis is a parasitic disease secondary to the presence of the larvae of certain insects, particularly diptera, in the skin of man or vertebrates [1]. Human myiasis is a rare clinical condition, but more frequently seen in tropical and subtropical areas. Hot humid climate with inadequate sanitary conditions favor the development of this condition. Dermatitis, psychiatric illnesses, leprosy, and diabetes are some contributory factors [2]. Treatment of myiasis, once diagnosed, is simple and rapid recovery is anticipated.

Myiasis is defined as a parasitic infestation of tissues and organs in living vertebrates with dipterous larvae. Infestation with dipterous larvae can occur when flies deposit their eggs or first stage larvae on the host's tissues. Myiasis is seen more frequently in tropical and subtropical countries, especially in rural regions where people are in close contact with animals. Diagnosis of myiasis depends on the demonstration of larvae on the host's tissues or organs. Correct identification of the larvae is important for the initiation of appropriate treatment and establishment of preventive me…

Myiases-causing flies are widely observed in tropical countries, whereas in Italy, a temperate country, their epidemiology and clinical presentation are poorly known. We report three cases of human conjunctival myiasis recently observed at our hospital, and the results of a review of the literature on human myiasis in Italy. In August 2012, a case of Oestrus ovis conjunctival myiasis acquired in the city centre of Florence, Italy was diagnosed at our hospital. In the early fall of 2013, two additional cases, acquired in the neighbouring areas, occurred. The review of literature showed that, up…

Oral myiasis is a condition in which tissues of the oral cavity are invaded by the larvae of flies. It is a rare disease in humans, often associated with very poor dental and oral hygiene. In children the main predisposing factors are incompetent lips, thumb sucking habits and continuous mouth breathing. The condition has been reported mainly in Asia and South America and rarely in more developed countries. The cases recorded in Italy concern adults with ocular or cutaneous manifestations alone. We describe an unusual infestation of the oral cavity of a five-year-old Italian boy with a severe …

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animal with larvae of Diptera fly which feed on the host dead or living tissue. Gingival myiasis is a very rare disease and associated with poor oral hygiene, senility, suppurative oral lesions, mental retardation and other conditions.
CASE REPORT: A case of gingival myiasis in a 2-year-old otherwise healthy child is reported. Treatment consisted of mechanical removal of larvae, extraction of the adjacent devitalized teeth and debridement of necrotic tissues.
CONCLUSION: Clinicians dealing with oral medicine should be aware …

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The case report describes the unusual presentation of the urogenital myiasis caused by Luciliasericata in two Slovakian men.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The first patient, aged 66, who suffered from a locally advanced and inoperable urinary bladder dedifferentiated TCC with bilateral ureteral obstruction, chronic renal insufficiency and non-functioning left kidney. After surgical exploration the patient developed a malignant vesico-intestino-cutaneous fistula with stool leakage through the open wound. Because of very poor hygiene, and unsatisfactory attendance by staff, …

An 8-year-old tracheostomized, gastrostomized, and with cerebral palsy boy was admitted for tracheostomy wound myiasis and cellulitis. Ether was applied in the wound, and then all the accessible larvae were removed. Antibiotic therapy was initiated. The procedure had to be repeated three more times to extract all the larvae. An airway endoscopy was performed and ruled out the presence of larvae in the airway, as well as any damage to the wall of the trachea. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged.

Myiasis which is a parasitic disease of humans and vertebrates, is caused by dipterous fly larvae feeding on the host's necrotic or living tissue. Although infestation by fly larvae is much more prevalent in animals, it occurs relatively frequently in humans in rural, tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and America. Myiasis is usually associated with poor general health and hygiene, restricted mobility and ulcerating lesions. The pathophysiology of the human infection differs depending on the fly species and where the larvae are located. It could be external or internal, and the invasio…

UNLABELLED: Myiasis in ENT, once a deadly disease still presents as a significant outdoor problem, though advances in management including supportive therapy has led to early healing with significant reduction in bed occupancy rate.
AIMS: To assess the clinico etiology, relationship of myiasis to habit and habitat of patients and to assess the changes in age, seasonal, socioeconomic incidence, nasal bacterial flora and usefulness of certain commonly done tests with reference to a gap of 25 years.
MATERIALS & METHODS: The presenting study was conducted on 80 patients selected over a period of…

Myiasis is a term derived from the Greek word "myia", meaning invasion of vital tissue of humans or other mammals by fly larvae. The deposited eggs develop into larvae, which penetrate deep structures causing adjacent tissue destruction. It is an uncommon clinical condition, being more frequent in underdeveloped countries and hot climate regions, and is associated with poor hygiene, suppurative oral lesions, alcoholism and senility. Its diagnosis is made basically by the presence of larvae. This paper reports a case of oral and maxillofacial myiasis involving 273 larvae in a patient with epide…

Here we reported the first case in Taiwan of human intestinal myiasis caused by larvae of Telmatoscopus albipunctatus. The 21-year-old male patient experienced gastroenteritis and anal itching. During the patient's first hospital visit the doctor suspected Enterobius infection. After treatment with anthelmintic mebendazole, 5 live larvae were passed out in the feces. Symptoms were resolved a few days later. The larvae were brown and slender, measuring approximately 10 mm in length. The worms were located in the intestine. Subsequent examination showed that the cause was an infestation of larva…
