Estimating Tanzania's National Met and Unmet Blood Demand From a Survey of a Representative Sample of Hospitals.

Estimating blood demand to determine collection goals challenges many low-income countries. We sampled Tanzanian hospitals to estimate national blood demand. A representative sample based on probability proportional to size sampling of 42 of 273 (15%) Tanzanian transfusing hospitals was selected. Blood bank registers, patient medical records, and blood component disposition records were reviewed prospectively from June to September 2013 to determine the number of components requested and the number and proportion issued, not issued due to nonavailability, and not issued for other reasons. Data

Ebola cases and health system demand in Liberia.

In 2014, a major epidemic of human Ebola virus disease emerged in West Africa, where human-to-human transmission has now been sustained for greater than 12 months. In the summer of 2014, there was great uncertainty about the answers to several key policy questions concerning the path to containment. What is the relative importance of nosocomial transmission compared with community-acquired infection? How much must hospital capacity increase to provide care for the anticipated patient burden? To which interventions will Ebola transmission be most responsive? What must be done to achieve contain

Patient needs four years after first psychiatric hospitalization in a Brazilian cohort.

Knowledge about the needs of psychiatric patients is essential for mental health care planning. However, research on met and unmet needs is still scarce, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to describe the patients' needs (met and unmet) at least four years after their first psychiatric hospitalization and to verify the role of demographic and clinical features as possible predictors of these needs. Patients who had their first psychiatric admission between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007 at an inpatient unit in the city of Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, were elig

Beneficiaries of Rehabilitation.

Recent research and the actions of the World Health Organization (WHO) have clarified the nature and value of rehabilitation as a key health strategy of the 21st century. However, strengthening rehabilitation in national health systems around the world is a challenge, partly because there is not an evidence-based argument that rehabilitation is a good economic and social investment. This argument, in turn, depends on characterizing the current and potential beneficiaries of rehabilitation, namely the individuals who could benefit from rehabilitation services whether or not they currently recei

[Unmet medical needs in otorhinolaryngology].

Unfulfilled medical wishes and the resulting disappointments often have infrastructural causes and are the result of inadequate services or limited available resources in a medical practice. As annoying as these might be, they can hardly be influenced by the individual therapeutic competence of the ENT physician. The situation is different in the case of unfulfilled medical wishes of patients who cannot be adequately helped for a variety of reasons, whether because of the severity of their illness or because of the particular, predominantly psychosomatic constellations. This can lead to disapp

This review also sought to map the methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and screening measures employed. METHODS: This scoping review was guided by the

Change in Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) scores over time among children and youth in out-of-home care: A latent growth curve analysis.

BACKGROUND: Children and youth in out-of-home care (OOHC) have significant behavioral health needs and may not receive relevant treatment. While the literature has urged implementation of standardized assessment of behavioral health needs, and specifically mental, emotional and social wellbeing, for these children and youth, little is known about the extent to which these needs improve over time. OBJECTIVE: The study purpose was to examine whether improvement in functioning was detected over time based on Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) scores, and how scores improved over tim

SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and repercussions for male infertility patients: A proposal for the individualized provision of andrological services.

The prolonged lockdown of health facilities providing non-urgent gamete cryopreservation-as currently recommended by many reproductive medicine entities and regulatory authorities due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic will be detrimental for subgroups of male infertility patients. We believe the existing recommendations should be promptly modified and propose that the same permissive approach for sperm banking granted for men with cancer is expanded to other groups of vulnerable patients. These groups include infertility patients (eg, azoospermic and cryptozoospermic) undergoing medical or surgical t

Unmet Needs in Nutritional Care in African Paediatric Oncology Units.

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of children diagnosed with cancer in low- and middle-income countries are malnourished, which likely affects survival. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An online survey to paediatric oncology units (POUs) in Africa was done regarding nutritional assessment and care. RESULTS: Sixty-six surveys were received from POUs in 31 countries. Only 44.4% had a dedicated dietician for nutritional assessment and support; 29.6% undertook routine nutritional assessment during treatment. None reported defined criteria for nutritional intervention. Total parenteral nutrition was not available for

BACKGROUND: We aimed to assess unmet needs of pwCF in the earthquake zone by income level. METHODS: Following the February 6, 2023 Earthquake in Turkiye, the shorter version of the 'Your Current Life Situation' (YCLS) survey was adapted for post-earthquake conditions. The adapted YCLS was administered through face-to-face interviews at participants in seven earthquake-affected provinces to determine the insecurity areas and unmet needs in pwCF. Parents completed the survey for those pwCF under 18 years old; those over 18 completed it themselves. RESULTS: Among 255 participants, 91.7% (n=234)
