[A rare carcinoma metastasizing to the lung: Sertoli-leydig cell tumor].

The lung is the most common site of metastasis for many malignancies. Especially the gastrointestinal system, gynecological malignancies and osteosarcomas frequently metastasize to the lung. It accounts for less than 0.5% of all ovarian neoplasms. The frequency of recurrence and metastasis is less than 5%. In most cases, they are stage I tumors, limited to the ovary and carry a good prognosis. Here, while investigating the nodules in the lung that were detected incidentally at the age of 64, the rare Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the lung is discussed clinically, radiologically and pathological

Rapid metastasis of mediastinal solitary fibrous tumor: Report a case.

RATIONALE: Mediastinal solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms. Complete resection is considered as the effective treatment and the prognosis is quite good. Rapid metastasis after surgery is extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this case report we describe a 42-year-old man who present with a mediastinal malignant SFTs. Enhanced computed tomography of chest revealed a 4.5 × 4.0-cm mass in the anterior mediastinum. DIAGNOSES: The tumor is composed of massive proliferation of atypical spindle cells. Immunohistochemical staining for cluster of differentiation (CD) 34, CD99

Thyroid metastasis from renal cell carcinoma-A case report after 9 years.

INTRODUCTION: The thyroid gland is a rare site of clinically detectable tumor metastasis. As thyroid tumors are usually assumed to be primary in origin, its recognition as a secondary is difficult. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of an 80-year old female who was referred to the Department of Surgery for a symptomatic thyroid nodule. Her medical history included a radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) nine years ago. During follow-up a pancreatic nodule was noted suggestive of a neuroendocrine tumor and the von Hippel-Lindau syndrome had to be ruled out. The fine-needle asp

Characteristics and prognosis of ovarian metastatic tumors: review of a single-institution experience.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the clinico-pathological characteristics and role of surgery in patients with ovarian metastasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical data from 51 patients with pathologically confirmed ovarian metastasis were reviewed. RESULTS: Ovarian metastasis accounted for 14% of all malignant ovarian neoplasms (51/364). Of the 51 metastatic ovarian tumor cases, 24 originated from gynecologic malignancies, while 27 originated from non-gynecologic malignancies. Optimal cytoreduction was performed in 88% and 37% of patients with metastases of gynecologic and non-gynecologic origin, res

Undifferentiated carcinoma of the jejunum with extensive rhabdoid features. Case report and review of the literature.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor, first described in the kidney of young infants, is a rare and highly aggressive neoplasm of controversial histogenesis that has been reported at many other sites, including the gastrointestinal tract. However, malignant rhabdoid tumor of the small intestine is very rare, with only seven cases published to date. We report a 70-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and weight loss, and showed a perforated jejunal mass with disseminated metastases by imaging. The patient underwent partial jejunectomy and biopsy of a liver metastasis. Microscopically, the tumor w

In situ hybridization demonstration of albumin mRNA in B6C3F1 murine liver and hepatocellular neoplasms.

In situ hybridization was used to detect albumin mRNA in normal liver and hepatocellular neoplasms in 20 male B6C3F1 mice between 17 and 24 months of age. Positive signals for albumin were observed consistently in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes in normal liver, particularly in periportal areas. No signals were observed in other cells, such as Kupffer's cells, mesenchymal cells, or bile duct epithelium. Of hepatocellular adenomas, 11/11 (100%) stained positively for albumin mRNA, whereas 14/15 (93%) of primary hepatocellular carcinomas showed positive expression. Albumin mRNA was also detected in

Encapsulated papillary neoplasms of the thyroid. A study of 14 cases followed for a minimum of 10 years.

Fourteen cases of encapsulated papillary thyroid neoplasm in which extracapsular extension was not observed and a minimum of 10 years follow-up was available are herein presented. The cases were divided into three categories: encapsulated papillary carcinomas (five cases), which had cytologic features typical of papillary thyroid carcinoma (vesicular or indented nuclei) and an entirely or predominantly thick capsule with capsular invasion; encapsulated papillary neoplasms of undetermined malignancy (seven cases), in which the cytologic features were also typical of papillary carcinoma but the

Cutaneous Basal Cell Carcinoma In Situ: A Review of the World Literature.

Cutaneous basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in situ is a recently recognized subtype of the skin neoplasm in which the abnormal cells are confined to the epidermis. BCC in situ of the skin was previously referred to as a superficial BCC. A review of the world literature has revealed 10 cutaneous BCCs in situ that have been described in nine patients but likely reflect a more general phenomenon. The neoplasm typically presents as an asymptomatic red plaque on the abdomen, upper extremity, back, and chest. Pathologic changes frequently show confluent tumor cells along the epidermal basal layer or super

An unusual case of metastasis to the left side of the heart: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac metastases are found in six to 20% of autopsies of patients with malignant neoplasm. The most common neoplasms that metastasize to the heart are malignant melanoma, lymphoma, and leukemia, but the relative numbers are greater with breast and lung cancers, reflecting the most common incidence of these cancers. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old Hispanic man presented to our hospital after being transferred from an outside hospital for workup and evaluation of an adrenal mass of the abdomen and pelvis, found on computed tomography. His chief complaint upon admission was alte

An Unusual Presentation of Gastric Cancer Metastatic to the Penile Shaft and Perineum.

Metastatic disease to the penile shaft is among the most rare metastatic sites for any neoplasm. We report the case of a healthy 69-year-old Jamaican male who initially presented with classical primary gastric adenocarcinoma. He was subsequently treated in a routine manner with complete surgical resection followed by chemoradiation as per the US Intergroup Trial 0116. Two years later, the patient presented with a chief complaint of dyspareunia. He was found to have a perineal nodule and penile skin thickening. He was ultimately diagnosed with gastric metastasis and treated with chemotherapy an

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pineal gland: a case report and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a type of fibroblastic neoplasm that can occur in various parts of the body, with SFT of the pineal gland being exceedingly rare. We report the case of a 58-year-old male presenting with recurrent hiccups, acid reflux, and headache. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an occupying lesion in the pineal region, suggestive of a neoplastic process. Intraoperatively, the lesion was located in the pineal region, exhibiting a grayish-red color, and was largely resected. Pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of solitary fibrous tumor (CNS WHO Grade 1). Postop

Unusual presentation of cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands: A case report.

According to the last edition of the World Health Organization classification, cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands (CASGs) was considered a variant of polymorphus adenocarcinoma although many authors proposed CASG as a distinct neoplasm. The aim of this study was to report an unusual presentation of CASG in the buccal mucosa of a 63-year-old male patient that showed signs of encapsulation and no evidence of lymph node metastasis. The lesion was composed of lobules of tumoral cells arranged in solid nests, sheets, papillary, and cribriform or glomeruloid patterns. Most of the periphera

Gnathic variant of primary adenoid cystic carcinoma: A unique case report.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (AdCC) is an uncommon malignant epithelial salivary gland neoplasm, which is indolent yet persistent. Intraosseous /central variant of AdCC of the jaw is poorly understood owing to its innocuous clinical presentation thus posing a diagnostic challenge. AdCC is characterized by perineural invasion, late distant metastasis and a high recurrence rate , thus having a major effect on the mortality and morbidity rate. It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage which is chiefly achieved through histological examination and complete clinic-radiological work up. A clinical case

Squamous cell carcinoma of the footpad with systemic metastasis in a captive crowned solitary eagle (Buteogallus coronatus).

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are one of the most common tumors of the tegument that can have a misdiagnosis of chronic skin wounds. An adult captive crowned solitary eagle presented an indolent wound-like ulcer on the footpad and a fatal outcome. An infiltrating tumoral mass in the foot and multiple tumoral metastatic nodules in visceral organs were detected. The neoplasm was composed of atypical squamous cells with strong positivity for cytokeratin, "keratin pearl" structures, and marked invasion of tissues confirming a diagnosis of metastatic SCC. This might be the first report of an SSC w

Cerebral relapsing meningioma: a surgical series with lack of reliability of standard parameters establishing prognosis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Meningioma is the most frequent meningeal neoplasm, usually without relapse or metastasis. Patient follow-up is challenging, not standardized and is decided in multidisciplinary case discussion. Our aim was to determine the clinical and histological factors influencing the time to relapse. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a single-Center retrospective study on 38 patients with surgically-excised relapsing meningiomas and collected clinical and pathological data. RESULTS: Our results show that none of the histological factors included in the WHO classification, nor those not
