Mixed (nodular and morpheic) upper eyelid basal cell carcinoma with orbital invasion - histological and clinical features.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of cancer located in the periocular area. We will present the clinical case of a 63-year-old male patient who was admitted to the 2nd Clinic of Neurosurgery, "Prof. Dr. Nicolae Oblu" Emergency Clinical Hospital, Iaşi, Romania, for an ulcerated tumor of about 0.8×0.7 cm in diameter with rolled edges and central necrosis in the upper eyelid with orbital invasion. According to the patient's personal history, he also underwent Cortisone treatment for dermatomyositis. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed behind the cutaneous flap, a l

Cutaneous Sweat Gland Carcinomas with Basaloid Differentiation: An Update with Emphasis on Differential Diagnoses.

This article focuses on primary cutaneous sweat gland carcinomas with basaloid differentiation, including cribriform apocrine carcinoma, endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, spiradenocarcinoma, and digital papillary adenocarcinoma. These tumors are rare and pose a significant diagnostic challenge. Their clinical presentation is nonspecific and there is significant overlap of their histologic features. Confident diagnosis is necessary because their clinical behavior ranges from indolent, nonrecurring, nonmetastasizing tumors to those wit

Arborizing vessels under dermoscopy: a case of cellular neurothekeoma instead of basal cell carcinoma.

Neurothekeoma is a slow-growing, benign tumor of nerve sheath origin. Herein we present a 62-year-old female who presented with a 5-month history of a nodule that had shown a slight enlargement. She had a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma for 10 years for which she had received multiple sessions of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Cutaneous examination showed a well-defined, firm, 2 cm, pink-red nodule of the right supraclavicular area, which showed thick and arborizing vessels under dermoscopy. A diagnosis of cellular neurothekeoma was made after histopathologic examination with immunohistochem

[Numerous pigmented lesions on sun-damaged skin. Where is the "wolf between the lambs"?].

A 64-year-old patient presented with bronzed, sun-damaged skin presented with numerous light and dark brown macules, mainly with sharply demarcated with irregular borders, present. Dermatoscopy showed a faint, light and dark brown network, fingerprint-like structures and irregular, sharp, moth-eaten borders in most lesions. In contrast, one dark-brown and bluish, asymmetrical flat plaque on the patient's right arm showed blue-grey globules, blue ovoid structures and leaf-like areas. Histology revealed a pigmented superficial basal cell carcinoma. Dermatoscopy allowed filtering out the malignan

The 'ultra slow' BCC - two case studies.

Most basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) can be diagnosed readily on the basis of a medical history and clinical examination, particularly when various 'red flags' are taken into account. The purpose of this article is to show two cases in which BCCs have apparently remained unchanged for over 20 years, masking one of the major indicators of malignancy: change. A general practitioner must maintain a high degree of vigilance so as not to miss those BCCs that behave in an atypical manner.

Gorlin syndrome associated with basal cell carcinoma of the vulva: A case report.

Gorlin syndrome, also known as nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), is a hereditary condition transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait with high penetrance and variable expressivity. The syndrome is characterized by numerous manifestations: basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are the leading ones. In this article a typical Gorlin syndrome case associated with basal cell carcinoma of the vulva is described.

Xeroderma pigmentosa--a disfiguring disease.

Xeroderma pigmentosa is a rare inherited autosomal recessive disease with the inability to repair DNA damage caused by UV light. Recognized in the late 1800 by Maritz Kaposi it has been reported world wide and in all races with an over prevalence of 1-4 per million population. Kunwar et al. Those affected are extremely sensitive to the UV portion of the light and have a 2000-fold increased risk of skin cancer in the sun exposed skin. Basal cell carcinoma is the most commonly associated carcinoma followed by Squamous cell carcinoma and Melanoma. The pigmentation on the face and the rest of the

[Use of curettage in the treatment of skin tumors].

Many skin tumours can be diagnosed and treated with minimal equipment in general practice. The author describes the indications and technique of curettage for treatment of seborrhoeic warts, simple warts, and molluscum contagiosum, and basal cell carcinomas.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Report of a case with associated Hodgkin's disease.

PURPOSE: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is an autosomal-dominant multisystem disorder characterized by various congenital anomalies, multiple cutaneous basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), and increased risk for other benign and malignant tumors. We report a 13-year-old girl with NBCCS who developed cutaneous BCCs 2 years after radiotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Review of clinical and laboratory observations of patients with NBCCS suggest a close relationship between radiotherapy and the early emergence of numerous BCCs. However, in vitro studies of the effect o

Basal cell carcinoma originating from an epidermoid cyst.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) originating from an epidermoid cyst which existed for about 50 years was seen in a 78-year-old Japanese male. Nests of basal cell carcinoma were connected with the epidermoid cyst, partially replacing the cyst wall.

[Immunophenotyping and morphometry of inflammatory infiltrates in variants of basalioma].

The inflammatory infiltrate of 5 histologically different types of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (n = 22) was characterized by means of the alkaline phosphatase monoclonal antialkaline phosphatase technique (APAAP). We proved a distinct stromal pattern of infiltration, which was focally accentuated; in some cases, the cells infiltrated the tumor itself. On phenotyping these cells, we found clear predominance of T cells (75%), which mostly consisted of T helper/inducer cells (45%) and suppressor/cytotoxic cells (32%); in addition, we found B cells (6%) as well as monocytes and macrophages (15%). The nasolabial flap for reconstruction of the alae nasi.

Cicatrizing basal-cell carcinomas, especially in the area of the alae nasi, require radical therapeutic treatment. Surgical removal, therefore, often results in penetrating defects. The nasolabial flap is recommended in such cases as a relatively simple operative method of reconstructing the lateral part of the nose. This technique offers favorable results in a curative and esthetic respect.

Malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumors with CD34 expression.

Malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumors (MPTT) are rare neoplasm arising from outer root sheath of hair follicle, the diagnosis of which is base essentially on histological features resulting in occasionally misdiagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. In difficult cases, however evaluation of additional parameters may be needed to differentiate benign proliferating trichilemmal tumor from MPTT or differentiate PTT and MPTT from squamous cell carcinoma. We report two cases of MPTT on which, in addition to histologic features, we have determined p53 immunohistochemical expression pattern, proli
