Progressive supranuclear palsy: neuropathologically based diagnostic clinical criteria.

All cases examined postmortem at the Mayo Clinic that met the classic neuropathological criteria for progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) were identified for retrospective clinical analyses. The necropsy material was re-examined by a second neuropathologist to confirm the pathological diagnosis of PSP, yielding 12 cases. A range of clinical signs were documented in these patients, with numerous findings beyond those noted in the original descriptions of this disorder. Atypical clinical findings included absence of supranuclear gaze palsy (two cases), prominent asymmetry (two), arm dystonia (tw

[The role of the delta sleep-inducing peptide in the formation of neuropathological syndromes].

The authors considered the pathogenetic role of delta-sleep inducing peptide (DSIP) in different neuropathological syndromes development and manifestation. According to own as well as published in the literature data authors showed the parkinsonian and the rotational syndromes development following DSIP central administration. Briefly, DSIP is a neuropeptide which play significant role in the mechanisms of development of different neuropathological syndromes, namely, epileptic, parkinsonian, withdrawal, rotational and others syndromes.

Clinico-neuropathological study of incontinentia pigmenti achromians--an autopsy case.

A clinico-neuropathological study of a Japanese girl with hypomelanosis of Ito, one of the neurocutaneous syndromes, is reported. At birth, typical skin hypopigmentation on the trunk and a hypopigmented streak on the left lower extremity were noted. From 2 months of age, intractable convulsions occurred and EEG showed various abnormalities. Psychomotor development was severely retarded and she died of pneumonia at the age of 13 months. Neuropathological examination revealed brachycephaly, micropolygyria and asymmetry of lateral ventricles. A histological examination showed a disarray of cortic

Neuropathological studies on Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis-induced malaria in mice.

Malaria infection in mice was produced by intraperitoneal inoculation of 10(6) erythrocytes parasitized with Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis, a virulent strain of murine malaria. About one week after infection parasitaemia ranged between 60 and 80%, and 100% mortality was observed. Infected animals were killed 6 days after infection to allow the examination of brain tissue. Electron microscopical observations revealed marked damage to cerebral vascular vessel walls with separation of muscular layers, media and adventitia. The endothelial cell layer was discontinuous in places. Activated fibrobla

Cardiac rhabdomyoma and tuberous sclerosis in three fetuses: a neuropathological study.

In spite of the development of modern imaging, most lesions of tuberous sclerosis (TS) remain difficult to detect before birth. Particularly, brain involvement at a fetal stage of development is poorly documented. We report three cases of fetuses examined after pregnancy was interrupted because of the detection of cardiac rhabdomyoma. In two of the three cases there were brain lesions suggestive of TS, including cortical tubers, subependymal nodules and scattered bizarre giant cells in the white matter. These observations confirm that brain lesions of TS can be present before birth; they can s

[Nervous system changes in infants with HIV virus. Neuropathological picture].

The neuropathologic examination of symptomatic perinatal HIV infection was performed using a large group of cases from New York Medical Centers. Macroscopic evaluation demonstrated many cases with microencephaly and others with brain atrophy. Microscopically in a part of them, as far as in others without microencephaly/atrophy changes corresponding to HIV encephalitis were found, including multinucleated giant cells, microglial nodules and perivascular infiltrations. In other brains in which inflammatory changes were minimal, myelin lesions were also observed and the picture corresponded to th

Clinical and neuropathological aspects of diffuse Lewy body disease in the elderly.

This chapter reports the clinical and neuropathological findings of eight cases of "diffuse Lewy body disease" verified by autopsy. The age at onset was between 60 and 82 years; the age at death was between 75 and 92 years. The initial symptoms were amnesia in three cases, orthostatic dizziness in three, visual hallucination in two, but parkinsonism in none. The cardinal clinical symptoms included dementia in all cases, hallucinatory-delusional state in six, akinesia and rigidity in five, and orthostatic hypotension in five. Antemortem diagnoses were senile dementia in five, and hallucinatory-

Neuropathological changes in resected temporal lobe of patients with cryptogenic epilepsy.

The study was performed on cerebral tissue resected during temporal lobectomy in 16 patients whose long-standing cryptogenic epilepsy did not submit to anticonvulsive drugs. Cases presenting definite etiological factors such as CNS trauma, infection or neoplasm were excluded. Neuropathological investigations disclosed microangiomas and focal vascular malformations in the meninges and tissue in 7 patients. Neuronal heterotopias in the white matter and of the white matter in the cortex were observed in 3 cases. Main cortical changes were: neuronal loss, chronic neuronal degeneration, perineurona

Neurofibromatosis cerebral vasculopathy in an infant: clinical, neuroradiographic, and neuropathologic studies.

An infant with neurofibromatosis developed recurrent cerebrovascular accidents beginning at 3 months of life. Cerebral arteriography demonstrated large-vessel occlusive disease and bilateral severe moyamoya. At autopsy these lesions were apparent on gross examination, and advanced intimal and medial dysplasia was seen on microscopic examination of both the anterior and posterior circulations. Although rare, neurofibromatosis cerebrovasculopathy may occur in young infants and may account for some strokes in this age group.

Clinically diagnosed Alzheimer disease: neuropathologic findings in 650 cases.

Despite the introduction of formal clinical criteria for Alzheimer disease (AD), the clinical diagnosis of AD remains one of exclusion of other dementias. To determine the accuracy of a clinical diagnosis of AD as made by practicing physicians, we reviewed the clinicopathologic records of a dementia brain bank and summarized the literature. Of 650 demented patients diagnosed during life as having AD, at autopsy 505 (78%) had AD with or without other neuropathologic conditions; only 390 (60%) of these had AD as the only neuropathologic condition. Of the remaining 145 (22%) patients with no neur

[A neuropathological analysis of neonatal deaths over a 20-year period].

This study is an overview of 2,515 consecutive autopsies on newborn infants who died during the first 28 days of life at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, during the period 1970-1989. The infants were grouped into 2 categories according to their gestational age and then subdivided into the groups of early (0-6 days) and late (7-28 days) neonatal deaths. In this overview trends in the occurrence of neuropathological observation were documented. In each 5-year time period and each gestational group the following diagnoses were recorded; hypoxic-ischemic neuronal changes, periventricular l

Cerebral lymphoma in AIDS. Clinical, radiological, neuropathological and immunopathological study.

Neuropathological findings from 8 individual cases of cerebral lymphomas in AIDS patients with consideration of the clinical, radiological, immunopathological, and other pertinent data selected from a series of 80 patients between 1985 and 1989 were studied. A wide variation in pathology was noted among our cases. It has been shown that lymphoma as a neuropathological diagnosis can coexist with a wide range of other characteristics, including toxoplasmosis, glial nodules, neuronophagia, degeneration, bleeding, hypoxia, progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy, and myelopathy, although none o

Neuropathologic findings after bone marrow transplantation: an autopsy study.

Clinicopathologic records and neuropathologic tissues of 109 patients who underwent necropsy after treatment with bone marrow transplantation (BMT) were examined. Underlying disorders included leukemia (70), aplastic anemia (25), solid tumors (7), lymphoma (5), Hodgkin's disease (1) and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (1). There were 34 females and 75 males, ranging in age from 2 to 56 years. Survival after transplantation averaged 3.6 months. The most common findings were cerebrovascular lesions (29), including hematomas, hemorrhagic necrosis, and infarcts. Central nervous system infections comprise

Early and late neuropathological changes in perinatal white matter damage.

Our material presents two patterns of white matter lesions in the brain of newborns dying with the clinical diagnosis of intrauterine or perinatal pathology: (1) classical periventricular ischemic infarction resulting in coagulative necrosis and (2) diffuse periventricular colliquative necrosis, in some cases involving the center of the cerebral convolutions. The majority of cases did not survive the first month of life. The cases with longer survival (up to six years) presented clinically with the syndrome of bilateral spastic cerebral palsy. Neuropathological examination showed dilation of t

Central pontine myelinolysis. A case report with typical neuropathological findings.

A case of central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) in an alcoholic patient with severe electrolyte changes is presented. Data in the literature suggest that it is safe to correct severe symptomatic hyponatremia to a value of 125-130 mEq/1 in 24 h. At the present time acute severe hyponatremia carries a bad prognosis if not treated with hypertonic NaCl solution. Electrolyte abnormalities are not the sole cause of CPM.

Neuropathologic study in the heterozygotes of X-linked brindled mutant mouse.

The clinical and morphological features were studied in female heterozygotes of the sex-linked brindled mutant mice, which are an appropriate animal model for human Menkes' kinky hair disease (MKHD). Clinically, female heterozygotes presented phenotypical variety. In these heterozygotes, we distinguished the unique group of mice, which showed mottled white and dark brown fur and curly whiskers. We designated this unique group "heterozygote, variant type", in contrast to the remaining group--"heterozygote, usual type"--, of which the fur was mottled dark and light brown, and the whiskers were s
