Learning from experience: Revolutionizing vascular care through nursing morbidity and mortality conferences.

BACKGROUND: Traditional morbidity and mortality (M&M) conferences often lack nursing involvement or perspectives despite nurses being frontline caregivers. On a vascular surgery unit, pre-intervention data revealed concerning gaps in nurses' medical knowledge and low confidence in escalating patient concerns to the vascular team. PURPOSE: To implement a structured nursing-led M&M conference to improve nurses' clinical knowledge, care confidence, and interprofessional collaboration in vascular care. METHODS: A structured implementation approach was employed, utilizing a dedicated electronic p

Integrating Holistic Communication into Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in Hospice and Palliative Care: An Approach Based on Peplau's Theory.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) has shown promising results in alleviating psychological and existential suffering among individuals with serious illnesses. In parallel, nursing offers a robust theoretical framework to guide therapeutic communication in this context. This article explores the application of Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations (PTIR) as a foundation for holistic communication in PAT, particularly in hospice and palliative care. We examine how PTIR's core concepts (person, health, environment, and nursing) along with its articulation of therapeutic roles, phases of the

A Natural Part of Human Diversity.

This fourth issue of Creative Nursing 2025 focuses on people with disabilities (another example of seldom-heard voices), those who are or want to be nurses and those for whom nurses care. Ableism in nursing education has kept out generations of people with disabilities, and our profession is the poorer for it. In this journal issue we hear the voices of content experts about structures and processes needed to enact true inclusion of people with disabilities (including accommodations, communication, leadership, design, technology, advocacy, and policy work), and personal accounts of student lea

Why renal nurses cope so well with their workplace stressors.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found significant stressors experienced by nurses working in haemodialysis units yet renal nurses appear to report less burnout than other nurses. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to undertake an inductive process to better understand the stressors and the coping strategies used by renal nurses that may lead to resilience. METHOD: Sixteen haemodialysis nurses from a metropolitan Australian hospital and two satellite units participated in open-ended interviews. Data were analysed from a grounded theory methodology. Measures of burnout and resilience were also obta

Exploring stakeholder perspectives on nursing competencies in palliative care in India: a qualitative inquiry.

BACKGROUND: India faces a growing need for Palliative Care due to its ageing population, rising cancer burden, and high prevalence of chronic illnesses. Unfortunately, less than 4% of the population has access to Palliative services, and the country ranks 59th in the 2021 Quality of Death Index. Contextually relevant and culturally sensitive nursing competencies are crucial to address this gap. However, there is no structured, evidence-based palliative nursing competency framework tailored to India's sociocultural and healthcare realities. This study explored stakeholder perspectives to identi

The changing nature of the measurement of the economic impact of nursing care on health care organizations.

This paper adapts the perspective of organizational contingency theory to consider the changing nature of how the economic impact of nursing care upon health care organizations is measured. It is argued that useful measures of the economic impact of nursing care are a function of environmental, organizational, and technological circumstances. The increasing and diverse demands of health care consumers (environmental), the dramatic restructuring and re-engineering of the health care delivery system (organizational), and recent developments in the capabilities of and insights from information me

Healthcare Professionals' Perceptions of Anhedonia in Major Depressive Disorder and the Possibilities of Episodic Future Thinking Training: A Qualitative Study in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mental disorder with a high prevalence rate and a high recurrence rate. Therefore, identifying and intervening in the core symptoms of MDD patients is of great significance. Anhedonia is manifested as an individual losing interest in activities or experiencing a significant decrease in the sense of pleasure, which is one of the two core symptoms of MDD. Episodic Future Thinking (EFT) training refers to the process of stimulating individuals' hope for positive future scenarios and encouraging them to take purposeful actions, which may have an e

Intervention of Coordination by Liaison Nurse Where Ward Staff Struggled to Establish a Therapeutic Relationship with a Patient Because of Failure to Recognize Delirium: A Case Study.

In this case study, ward staff found it difficult to establish a therapeutic relationship with a patient with advanced gastric cancer because they misdiagnosed delirium as a psychogenic reaction to the cancer diagnosis. This article reports on the process and effects of intervention by a liaison nurse. The liaison nurse recognized the misdiagnosis and approached the ward staff via a psychiatrist-led team. This enabled rapid revision of the treatment policy. The liaison nurse contributed to the continuation of treatment by enabling the ward staff and patient to understand each other better and
