Quantitative differences between the optic nerve head and peripapillary retina in low-tension and high-tension primary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To determine whether quantitative differences in optic nerve topography could be identified between patients having primary open-angle glaucoma with normal intraocular pressure (low-tension primary open-angle glaucoma [LT-POAG]) vs those with elevated intraocular pressure (high-tension primary open-angle glaucoma [HT-POAG]). METHODS: We attempted to match 31 eyes of 31 patients in the LT-POAG group on a case-by-case basis with comparable eyes of 31 patients with HT-POAG. We used the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph to evaluate the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer. RESULTS:

[Fiberoptic intubation using two tracheal tubes for a child with Goldenhar syndrome].

Goldenhar syndrome is associated with difficult airway due to the characteristic craniofacial anomalies such as hypoplasia of the mandible and molar bones. We present our method of fiberoptic intubation using two tracheal tubes for a girl with Goldenhar syndrome undergoing cochlear implant surgery. She had received general anesthesia for dental treatment one year before, but the treatment had been cancelled because of the failure of tracheal intubation. We induced anesthesia for her with inhalation of sevoflurane and nitrous oxide. After obtaining a stable anesthetic level, we inserted two tra

Flash photolysis using a light emitting diode: an efficient, compact, and affordable solution.

Flash photolysis has become an essential technique for dynamic investigations of living cells and tissues. This approach offers several advantages for instantly changing the concentration of bioactive compounds outside and inside living cells with high spatial resolution. Light sources for photolysis need to deliver pulses of high intensity light in the near UV range (300-380 nm), to photoactivate a sufficient amount of molecules in a short time. UV lasers are often required as the light source, making flash photolysis a costly approach. Here we describe the use of a high power 365 nm light em

Ophthalmoscopic detectability of the parafoveal annular reflex in the evaluation of the optic nerve: an experimental study in rhesus monkeys.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether assessment of the ophthalmoscopic visibility of the parafoveal annular reflex is helpful in the detection of optic nerve fiber and optic nerve damage. DESIGN: Experimental animal study. ANIMALS: The study was performed in rhesus monkeys, divided into four study groups, with no significant difference in ages of the animals in the various groups. Three of these groups had (1) experimental chronic high-pressure glaucoma (n = 37 monkeys), (2) experimental temporary occlusion of the central retinal artery (n = 19 monkeys), and (3) systemic atherosclerosis and arteri

Phase optimization approach to control high peak-to-average power ratio in a second-order soliton-based NFDM system.

Fiber-optic communication is an emerging technology that enables high-capacity data transmission using light waves. However, the inherent nonlinearity of the optical fiber limits the attainable capacity. As a result, nonlinearity compensation has become a significant focus in optical fiber communication, for which nonlinear frequency-division multiplexing (NFDM) is an effective solution. The signals generated in an NFDM system are fundamentally optical soliton signals and hence undergo the effect of multi-soliton periodicity. But this results in a higher signal peak-to-average ratio (PAPR) at

Plasmonic Coupling on an Optical Microfiber Surface: Enabling Single-Molecule and Noninvasive Dopamine Detection.

Optical fibers can be effective biosensors when employed in early-stage diagnostic point-of-care devices as they can avoid interference from molecules with similar redox potentials. Nevertheless, their sensitivity needs to be improved for real-world applications, especially for small-molecule detection. This work demonstrates an optical microfiber biosensor for dopamine (DA) detection based on the DA-binding-induced aptamer conformational transitions that occur at plasmonic coupling sites on a double-amplified nanointerface. The sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity when detecting DA molecules…

Afferent and efferent connections of the nucleus prethalamicus in the yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus.

The nucleus prethalamicus (PTh) receives fibers from the optic tectum and then projects to the dorsal telencephalon in the yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus. However, it remained unclear whether the PTh is a visual relay nucleus, because the optic tectum receives not only visual but also other sensory modalities. Furthermore, precise telencephalic regions receiving prethalamic input remained unknown in the goby. We therefore investigated the full set of afferent and efferent connections of the PTh by direct tracer injections into the nucleus. Injections into the PTh labeled cells in the

Efferent projections from the lateral geniculate nucleus to the pineal complex of the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).

The intergeniculate leaflet of the lateral geniculate nucleus is considered to modulate circadian activity rhythms probably mediated by a direct neuronal connection to the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The present study in the gerbil demonstrates, by anterograde tracing with Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoaglutinin (PHA-L), the existence of an additional neuronal projection from a subportion of the lateral geniculate nucleus, involving the intergeniculate leaflet, directly to the pineal gland. PHA-L-immunoreactive nerve fibers originating from perikarya at the injection site were located under the optic t

Fiber counting and analysis in the diagnosis of asbestos-related disease.

Analysis of numbers and types of asbestos fibers present in lung tissue may provide insights into the pathogenesis of asbestos-induced disease, as well as diagnostic information concerning the relationship of a given lesion to asbestos exposure. This type of analysis requires extraction of fibers and asbestos bodies from lung tissue, preferably by means of a digestion-and-concentration technique, and examination with a combination of electron optical techniques, including electron diffraction and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The combination permits definitive identification of asbesto

Bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia in a pup.

A 6-week-old Beagle failed to respond to visual stimulation. Examination revealed fixed dilated pupils and hypoplasia of both optic disks. Results of electroretinography were normal. Radiography of the skull revealed small optic nerve foramina. Histologically, the outer layers of the retinas were normal, the retinal ganglion cells were scarce, and the nerve fiber layers, optic nerves, and optic chiasm were hypoplastic.

Olivary branching projections to the flocculus, nodulus and uvula in the rabbit. I. An electrophysiological study.

Olivocerebellar branching projections to the flocculus, nodulus and uvula were studied electrophysiologically in pigmented rabbits anesthetized with pentobarbital and halothane. Neurons in the dorsal cap of the inferior olive were antidromically activated by stimulation of the contralateral flocculus, nodulus and uvula. The antidromic responses in the dorsal cap from the flocculus, nodulus and uvula partially occluded with each other. Electrical stimulation of the nodulus (or uvula) evoked early and late climbing fiber responses in the flocculus with latencies of 4.0 ms and 10.0 ms, respective

Septo-optic dysplasia associated with see-saw nystagmus.

Septo-optic dysplasia is a syndrome of midline abnormalities of the central nervous system resulting in absence of the septum pellucidum and dysplasia of the optic chiasm or optic nerves. The characteristic fundus findings of small, dysplastic discs and defects in the nerve fiber layer enable the clinician to predict this syndrome prior to contrast studies. An unsual form of nystagmus, see-saw nystagmus, was associated with septo-optic dysplasia in this case report.

Glaucoma-related Changes in the Mechanical Properties and Collagen Micro-architecture of the Human Sclera.

OBJECTIVE: The biomechanical behavior of the sclera determines the level of mechanical insult from intraocular pressure to the axons and tissues of the optic nerve head, as is of interest in glaucoma. In this study, we measure the collagen fiber structure and the strain response, and estimate the material properties of glaucomatous and normal human donor scleras. METHODS: Twenty-two posterior scleras from normal and diagnosed glaucoma donors were obtained from an eyebank. Optic nerve cross-sections were graded to determine the presence of axon loss. The specimens were subjected to pressure-co

[The primary optical projection in albino and pigmented rats].

1. We have studied by silver degeneration methods in transversal and horizontal brain series the pathways and the terminal nuclei of the primary optic system in albino and pigmented rats. 2. About 90% of the retinal axons are crossing in the Chiasma opticum. Differences between albino and pigmented rats are small. At the level of the lateral geniculate body (l.g.b.) the axons ramify. One branch is going in the optic tract or in the transversalsystem to the pretectum and tectum. The other branch goes as a collateral in the longitudinal system of the dorsal l.g.b. and ends here. 3. The optic fib

Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy associated with macrocytic anemia.

A 37-year-old man experienced the acute onset of blurred vision, particularly in the inferior hemifield of his left eye. Neuro-ophthalmic examination showed a left afferent pupillary defect, a left inferior altitudinal visual field deficit, bilateral nerve fiber layer infarcts and hemorrhages, and left optic disc elevation with edema of the nerve fiber bundle. Complete examination and laboratory studies revealed only a severe folate deficiency anemia. This is the first well-documented report of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy associated with anemia in the absence of other systemic abnormali

Acute Effect of Pore-Forming Clostridium perfringens ε-Toxin on Compound Action Potentials of Optic Nerve of Mouse.

ε-Toxin is a pore forming toxin produced by Clostridium perfringens types B and D. It is synthesized as a less active prototoxin form that becomes fully active upon proteolytic activation. The toxin produces highly lethal enterotoxaemia in ruminants, has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and specifically binds to myelinated fibers. We discovered that the toxin induced a release of ATP from isolated mice optic nerves, which are composed of myelinated fibers that are extended from the central nervous system. We also investigated the effect of the toxin on compound action potenti

Compatibility of Trapped Ions and Dielectrics at Cryogenic Temperatures.

We study the impact of an unshielded dielectric-here, a bare optical fiber-on a ^{40}Ca^{+} ion held several hundred microns away in a cryogenic surface electrode trap. We observe distance-dependent stray electric fields of up to a few kV/m due to the dielectric, which drift on average less than 10% per month and can be fully compensated with reasonable voltages on the trap electrodes. We observe ion motional heating rates attributable to the dielectric of ≈30 quanta per second at an ion-fiber distance of 215(4)  μm and ≈1.5  MHz motional frequency. These results demonstrate the viability of u
