AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Obesity triggers various health disorders, but information on these disorders in real-world settings remains limited. To address this knowledge gap, we developed a database directly linked to electronic medical records (EMRs). We here present the baseline data for this database, designated Japan Obesity Research Based on electronIc healTh Records (J-ORBIT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individuals with obesity disease diagnosed according to the criteria of the Japan Society for the Study of Obesity were registered in J-ORBIT from seven medical centers in Japan. We analyzed the re…

INTRODUCTION: Correction of severe orbital and globe malposition from neurofibromatosis remains a significant clinical challenge. Current techniques including zygoma osteotomy, bone grafting, or placement of orbital implants do not adequately address aberrant anatomy, under-correct the deformity, and are prone to relapse. The authors have developed the orbital box segmentation osteotomy to reduce vertical orbital height and translocate the orbit and use patient-specific custom internal orbital titanium implants to close the cranio-orbital communication-reestablishing both the external orbital …

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to evaluate the effect of increased orbital soft tissue volume on orbital growth.
METHOD: Patients with unilateral or significantly asymmetric bilateral buphthalmos as determined by axial computed tomography scan were recruited. Volumetric determinations of the bony orbit with use of axial 1.5 mm sections on computed tomography were undertaken. Statistical analysis of the paired ocular length measurement and bony orbital volume measurements for each patient were performed.
RESULTS: Eight patients (mean age 41 months) with a 15% or greater difference in axial length w…

Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS), a common sarcoma in adults, typically affects the extremities. Primary orbital involvement is uncommon, and orbital metastasis is exceedingly rare. We describe a case of orbital MFS due to metastasis and provide an updated literature review. A 56-year-old woman presented with 2 months of progressive right eye proptosis. Relevant history included left palmar MFS excised 2 years prior. Examination demonstrated proptosis and restriction in abduction of her right eye without optic nerve compromise. Imaging revealed a well-circumscribed right orbital mass. Initial biopsy sho…

The unique anatomy and physiology of the growing craniofacial skeleton predispose children to different fracture patterns as compared to adults. Diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orbital fractures can be challenging. A thorough history and physical examination are essential for the diagnosis of pediatric orbital fractures. Physicians should be aware of symptoms and signs suggestive of trapdoor fractures with soft tissue entrapment including symptomatic diplopia with positive forced ductions, restricted ocular motility (regardless of conjunctival abnormalities), nausea/vomiting, bradycardia,…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The current article will update and review the clinical and radiological manifestations and management of rhino-orbital mucormycosis (ROM).
RECENT FINDINGS: There has been an increase in cases of ROM worldwide, especially in India. Immunosuppression (especially diabetes mellitus) is a known predisposing risk factor for ROM. Delayed diagnosis and treatment of ROM can be vision or life-threatening. This article reviews the clinical and radiologic features, treatment, and prognosis of ROM with special emphasis on new and emerging therapies.
SUMMARY: ROM is an angioinvasive fu…

BACKGROUND: The term "orbital complication" does not designate an independent nosological entity, but is rather a collective designation for diseases or disease effects that involve the orbit and its internal structures by extension from outside. In general, their most prominent manifestation is swelling of the orbital soft tissues, usually unilaterally. The incidence of sinogenic orbital complications is approximately 1.6 per 100 000 children and 0.1 per 100 000 adults per year.
METHODS: This review is based on publications retrieved by a selective search of the literature on the epidemiolog…

BACKGROUND: Orbital inflammatory disease encompasses a spectrum of disorders. Idiopathic orbital inflammation (IOI) is often a diagnosis of exclusion, which needs to be differentiated from infections, systemic inflammatory disease, and neoplasms. IOI includes anterior inflammation with dacryoadenitis, myositis, perineuritis of the optic nerve, periscleritis, diffuse sclerosing inflammation, and orbital apex inflammation.
OBJECTIVE: A differential diagnostic overview of IOI is presented, including its subcategories, diagnosis, and treatment.
CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of IOI is often made by e…

Sitosterolemia is a rare inherited condition in which plant sterols are stored and deposited in the tissues. Described in 1974 by Battacharyya and Connor, it is characterized by tendon and tuberous xanthomas and a propensity to premature coronary atherosclerosis. We present the first reported case of the disease being manifest in the periorbital region. A 44-year-old man presented with a six-month history of swelling below the left eyebrow overlying the orbital rim, but without displacement of the globe. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a soft tissue mass within the orbit, with subsequent…

Objective: This study aimed to determine the most frequent clinical aspects in patients with odontogenic orbital inflammation, the computed tomography (CT) aspect, and the most appropriate treatment. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective case-series study conducted on 3 patients with ages between 16 and 55 years old, in the Ophthalmology and Oro-Maxillo-Facial Clinics of "Sf. Spiridon" Emergency Hospital, Iași, Romania. The following investigations were performed in all selected cases: visual acuity (VA), ocular motility examination, anterior segment examination at slit-lamp, fundus ex…
