Diet composition and risk of overweight and obesity in women living in the southwestern United States.

OBJECTIVE: It is unknown whether dietary patterns or macronutrient composition contribute to the observed differences in rates of overweight and obesity among Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women in the United States. We assessed the association of dietary patterns and macronutrient composition with overweight and obesity in Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of dietary data from a case-control study of breast cancer. PARTICIPANTS: Population-based control participants (871 Hispanic and 1,599 non-Hispanic white women) from the southwestern United States …

Modifiable environmental and behavioral determinants of overweight among children and adolescents: report of a workshop.

The number of children at risk for overweight and the number of overweight children are increasing and have become a serious public health concern. Interventions that could be applied at the population level have not been proven effective. The development of effective strategies is thought to be hampered by the lack of understanding of which behavioral and environmental factors need to be modified. On June 14 and 15, 2004, the NIH held a meeting of experts to discuss the issue of modifiable determinants of obesity in children and adolescents. Included were presentations on interventions among …

The significance of under- or overweight during childhood as a risk factor for hypertensive diseases in pregnancy.

Hypertensive diseases in pregnancy are still a major cause of foetal and maternal mortality. Known risk factors allow identification of only a small number of patients at risk of developing such a complication. However, better knowledge of the risk profile would improve an early adequate monitoring of these pregnancies. We therefore investigated the correlation between under- or overweight during childhood and the development of hypertensive diseases during pregnancy. The study was designed as a cross-sectional case control study. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 2600 women…

The deep inferior epigastric perforator flap for breast reconstruction in overweight and obese patients.

The authors retrospectively reviewed the computerized records of 71 women undergoing 80 deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap reconstructions after mastectomy over a 1-year period. There were 33 normal, 26 overweight, and 12 obese patients. No statistically significant difference in flap complications was found between groups. Overall fat necrosis rates were 11.4 percent for the normal-weight patients, 6.7 percent for the overweight patients, and 6.7 percent for the obese patients. Postoperative hospital time was similar for all groups. The occurrence of abdominal wall fascial laxity…

Prepregnant overweight and obesity diminish the prolactin response to suckling in the first week postpartum.

OBJECTIVE: The population subgroups with the highest proportion of overweight and obese women often are characterized by the lowest rates of initiation and shortest durations of breastfeeding. We previously documented that these 2 population-level trends may be related. In a population of white women who lived in a rural area, we observed that prepregnant overweight and obesity were associated with failure to initiate and also to sustain lactation. The means by which being overweight or obese negatively affect lactational performance is unknown and likely to be multifactorial in origin, includ…

High prevalence of overweight in a stable Spanish hemodialysis population: a cross sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: In the general population, the prevalence of overweight is high and is considered a mortality risk factor. In maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients reports regarding overweight and its predictors are scarce. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence and predictors of overweight in MHD patients, supplemented with additional follow-up data on mortality. METHODS: Retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study of 190 white, noncomplicated patients on MHD recruited from 5 Spanish dialysis centers. Three anthropometric indexes were scored (relative body weight, skinfold thickness, an…

Effectiveness of coronary artery bypass grafting with or without cardiopulmonary bypass in overweight patients.

BACKGROUND: Off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery has been demonstrated to reduce morbidity in elective patients. However, high-risk patients might benefit the most from this surgical procedure. Our goal was to investigate the effectiveness of on-pump and off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery on early clinical outcome in a consecutive series of overweight patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: From April 1996 to April 2001, data on 4321 patients undergoing coronary surgery (mortality 1.4%) were prospectively entered into the Patient Analysis and Tracking System. Data were extracted for all patien…

Plasma Microrna Profiling in Overweight and Obese Pregnant Women: An Exploratory Pooled-Sample Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal overweight and obesity are associated with metabolic, vascular, and obstetric complications. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) are stable in plasma and may reflect obesity-related molecular alterations during pregnancy. AIM: To compare plasma miRNA expression profiles between normal-weight and overweight/obese pregnant women. METHODS: The study included 50 pregnant women: 25 with normal weight and 25 with overweight/obesity. RNA was isolated from individual plasma samples and combined into one pooled RNA sample per study group. The pooled samples were analyzed in technical …

Exploratory phase angle assessment after atrial fibrillation ablation in overweight patients: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The phase angle (PhA), derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), is an indicator of cellular health and nutritional status. Its role in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), particularly after catheter ablation, is not well-established. This study aimed to investigate changes in PhA and their correlation with cardiac remodeling in overweight patients with persistent AF after cryoballoon ablation. METHODS: Thirteen overweight patients (BMI ≥ 23 kg/m²) with persistent AF scheduled for ablation were prospectively enrolled. One patient was excluded due to sick sinus syndro…
