Preeclamptic pregnancy is associated with increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic control of HR.

Previous work from our laboratory using heart rate variability (HRV) has demonstrated that women before menopause have a more dominant parasympathetic and less effective sympathetic regulations of heart rate compared with men. Because it is still not clear whether normal or preeclamptic pregnancy coincides with alternations in the autonomic functions, we evaluated the changes of HRV in 17 nonpregnant, 17 normotensive pregnant, and 11 preeclamptic women who were clinically diagnosed without history of diabetic neuropathy, cardiac arrhythmia, and other cardiovascular diseases. Frequency-domain a

Analysis of heart rate variability in posttraumatic stress disorder patients in response to a trauma-related reminder.

BACKGROUND: Spectral analysis of heart rate variability has recently been shown to be a reliable noninvasive test for quantitative assessment of cardiovascular autonomic regulatory responses, providing a dynamic map of sympathetic and parasympathetic interaction. In a prior study exploring the state of hyperarousal characterizing the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) syndrome, the authors described standardized heart rate analysis carried out in 9 PTSD patients at rest, which demonstrated clear-cut evidence of a baseline autonomic hyperarousal state. METHODS: To examine the dynamics of thi

In vivo secretory responses of submandibular glands in streptozotocin-diabetic rats to sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve stimulation.

Submandibular gland responses to sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve stimulation were studied in streptozotocin-diabetic rats. Morphologically, the acinar cells in control glands were relatively uniform in size and contained electron-lucent granules. The granular ducts were distinguished by the presence of electron-dense granules. With the exception of intracellular lipid droplets and the presence of a few autophagosomes in diabetic glands, no consistent differences in acinar cell structure were observed. In contrast, the diameter of the granular ducts and the granule content of their cells

Intermittent parasympathetic symptoms in lumbar spinal stenosis.

Symptoms related to autonomic nervous dysfunction are uncommon in spinal stenosis. Involvement of nerve roots S2-S5 has previously been reported only in a few cases. Of great interest is the occurrence of phenomena such as intermittent penile erections and fecal incontinence on walking in patients with compromise of the lower lumbar spinal canal. We report on two patients, one of whom presented because of fecal incontinence and the other with penile erections on walking. In both cases, these manifestations resolved after decompressive laminectomy. These patients are compared to six other patie

Fentanyl produces cholinergically-mediated analeptic and EEG arousal effects in rats.

Fentanyl (20 micrograms/kg i.p.), administered to naltrexone-pretreated, pentobarbital-anesthetized rats, produced a shortening of the duration of narcosis. This analeptic effect was blocked by atropine, but not by methylatropine, indicating that a central cholinergic mechanism was involved. Fentanyl also increased sodium-dependent high affinity uptake of choline activity in the hippocampus and cortex that had been depressed by the barbiturate. Injection of 0.8 ng of fentanyl into the pontis oralis in the pontine reticular formation also produced analepsis in naltrexone-pretreated, pentobarbit

Cobaltic lysine study of the morphology and distribution of the cranial nerve efferent neurons (motoneurons and preganglionic parasympathetic neurons) and rostral spinal motoneurons in the Japanese toad.

The morphology and distribution of the cranial nerve motoneurons (except III, IV, and VI) and rostral spinal motoneurons were systematically studied in the Japanese toad (Bufo japonicus) by retrograde labelling with cobaltic lysine complex. The cobaltic lysine clearly labelled whole neurons, i.e., cell bodies, proximal and distal dendrites, and axons. The branchial motoneurons (V, VII, IX, and X) had similar morphological characteristics and formed a more-or-less continuous cell column through the brainstem. The dendrites could be grouped mainly into the dorsomedial and the ventrolateral dendr

The relationship between tonic accommodation and ciliary muscle innervation.

Previous studies have used Badal laser optometry to demonstrate significant variance in the distribution of tonic (or "dark-focus") resting positions of accommodation (TA) for groups of observers. This study investigates whether individual differences in TA are due to individual differences in autonomic tone of the ciliary muscle by comparing separately the effects of a muscarinic receptor antagonist (Tropicamide 0.5%) and a beta receptor agonist (Isoprenaline 3%) on the distribution of TA. Ten subjects were used for each study with mean ages of 23.2 and 23.0 yr, respectively. The distribution

A psychophysiological hypothesis on the aetiology of duodenal ulceration.

A previously undescribed explanation for the development of duodenal ulcer is advanced. Stressful situations and avoidance-avoidance conflicts in individuals with a dependant compliant personality incapable of appropriate "stimulus-seeking behaviour" lead to an immobilised state. This predicament is denied. Helplessness develops. This state is associated with an autonomic imbalance in which a central monoamine depletion results in uncompensated parasympathetic overactivity which facilitates the development of duodenal ulceration. Denial often invalidates superficial psychological investigation

Nervous control of gastro-pancreatic somatostatin secretion in pigs.

The influence of the autonomic nervous system on the secretion of somatostatin from the antral and the fundic parts of the stomach and from the pancreas of the pig was investigated in experiments involving electrical stimulation of the vagal nerves and the splanchnic nerves in (1) intact, anesthetized pigs and (2) isolated perfused preparations of (a) antrum with intact vagal supply, (b) pancreas with intact vagal supply, (c) pancrease with intact sympathetic supply. The results clearly demonstrated that parasympathetic activity inhibits D-cell function in all gastro-pancreatic tissues; antral

Sodium balance, circadian BP rhythm, heart rate variability, and intrarenal renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and dopaminergic systems in acute phase of ARB therapy.

We have revealed that even in humans, activated intrarenal renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) enhances tubular sodium reabsorption to facilitate salt sensitivity and nondipper rhythm of blood pressure (BP), and that angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) could increase daytime urinary sodium excretion rate (UNaV) to produce lower sodium balance and restore nondipper rhythm. However, the sympathetic nervous system and intrarenal dopaminergic system can also contribute to renal sodium handling. A total of 20 patients with chronic kidney disease (61 ± 15 years) underwent 24-h ambulatory BP m

[Regulation of Systemic Metabolism by Autonomic Nerve-Mediated Inter-Organ Networks].

Autonomic nerves, including sympathetic nerves and parasympathetic nerves, innervate organs and modulate those function, thereby regulating systemic metabolism. Autonomic nerve bundles contain both afferent and efferent nerve fibers, and both fibers play important roles in regulating systemic metabolism for maintenance of homeostasis at the whole-body level. Furthermore, recently-obtained evidence unraveled the metabolic regulatory systems through autonomic nerve-mediated inter-organ networks. In these systems, afferent innervations of autonomic nerves transmit metabolic information from perip

Evaluation of the autonomic nervous system in autochthonous patients from Amazon with acute Chagas disease treated with benznidazole.

Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease, is endemic in the Amazon region, where oral transmission predominates. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) impairment is a recognized pathophysiological mechanism contributing to disease progression, including Chagas cardiomyopathy. This study aimed to assess ANS function in patients with acute Chagas disease from the Amazon, evaluating responses pre- and post-benznidazole treatment. We included 28 acute-phase patients and 20 healthy controls. Participants underwent comprehensive cardiac evaluations, including 12-lead ECG, echocardiogram, 24-hour Holter

Does pain location influence heart rate variability? A comparative analysis of patients with neck or low back pain, and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Chronic neck pain (CNP) and chronic low back pain (CLBP) are prevalent musculoskeletal disorders linked to autonomic nervous system dysfunction, assessed through heart rate variability (HRV). This study aimed to compare HRV indices among subjects with CNP, CLBP, and healthy controls, examining whether pain location influences autonomic modulation. METHODS: An observational study was conducted involving 93 adults (31 per group: CNP, CLBP, and controls). HRV was measured using a Firstbeat Bodyguard® device, analyzing parameters including mean HR, minimum and maximum HR, r

Urinary Dopamine Excretion Rate Decreases during Acute Dietary Protein Deprivation and Is Associated with Increased Plasma Pancreatic Polypeptide Concentration.

Background: Dopamine, a key neurotransmitter in the autonomic nervous system participating in the homeostatic balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions, is involved in food intake regulation. Objective: We investigated whether dopamine is altered by acute fasting or overfeeding diets with varying macronutrient content. Design: Ninety-nine healthy subjects underwent 24-h dietary interventions including eucaloric feeding, fasting, and five different overfeeding diets in a crossover design. Overfeeding diets (200% of eucaloric requirements) included one diet with 3%-protein (low-p

Upper gastrointestinal dysmotility after spinal cord injury: is diminished vagal sensory processing one culprit?

Despite the widely recognized prevalence of gastric, colonic, and anorectal dysfunction after spinal cord injury (SCI), significant knowledge gaps persist regarding the mechanisms leading to post-SCI gastrointestinal (GI) impairments. Briefly, the regulation of GI function is governed by a mix of parasympathetic, sympathetic, and enteric neurocircuitry. Unlike the intestines, the stomach is dominated by parasympathetic (vagal) control whereby gastric sensory information is transmitted via the afferent vagus nerve to neurons of the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). The NTS integrates this senso

GDNF levels in the lower lip skin in a rat model of trigeminal neuropathic pain: implications for nonpeptidergic fiber reinnervation and parasympathetic sprouting.

Trigeminal neuropathic pain is associated with trigeminal nerve damage. Significant remodeling of the peripheral nervous system may contribute to the pain; however, the changes and the factors that drive them have not been well described. In this study, a partial injury of the mental nerve of the rat, a purely sensory branch of the trigeminal nerve, resulted in prolonged mechanical allodynia in the lower lip skin persisting up to 4 months. Although nonpeptidergic, P2X3-immunoreactive (IR) C fibers displayed a transient decrease in density of innervation in the skin; they returned to sham level

Evaluation of autonomic malfunction in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVE: The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in urinary disturbance which is one of the main symptoms of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH); thus, the focus of the present study was to identify the autonomic function parameters that would be useful as clinical indicators of iNPH. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 18 iNPH patients (group N) and 31 normal controls (group C). Before and after a lumbar puncture test, they were examined for CVR-R and total heart rate. A power spectral analysis of R-R interval variability of their 24-hour Holter ECGs was also done.
