Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a malign tumor involving the parotid gland and minor salivary glands. Parotid pure cystic mucoepidermoid carcinoma can also masquerade mucocele, and hence, histopathological examination is crucial to distinguish the 2. Herein, the authors report a patient of mucoepidermoid carcinoma presenting as an asymptomatic mucocele-like cystic parotid mass. A 69-year-old female presented with cystic parotid mass; her examination findings and diagnostic imaging were consistent with that of mucocele. Histological examination revealed mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This case indicates

Oncocytic metaplasia rarely has been reported in mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Most salivary gland lesions with oncocytic change are benign; therefore, it is important to distinguish mucoepidermoid carcinoma from other entities that may show prominent oncocytic change. We report a rare case of oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a 65-year-old woman.

Oncocytoma is a rare benign salivary gland tumour with an incidence rate about 1-2%. It is located in the parotid gland in 82% of cases. The aging mitochondrial hypothesis could explain the predilection between 70 and 90 years. Clinical and radiological features of the parotid oncocytoma are not different from those of the others parotid benign tumors. We report a case of oncocytoma of the left parotid gland in a 69 years woman in whom fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was for a pleomorphic adenoma. Through this case we highlight the importance of histopathology in the positive diagnosis

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a the most frequent benign tumor of the parotid gland, although in some cases it can turn malignant (3-4%). Usually it grows slow and is removed surgically as a small tumor (average diameter 2-6 cm). Most huge PA tumors that can be found in the literature are of superficial lobe origin. In the present paper we presented a case of 38-year-old male patient with PA of parotid glad achieving 10 x 15 cm tumor and of deep lobe origin. Total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation was chosen as a treatment. No postoperative neurological deficiencies was found and no f

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) of the salivary gland is a disease entity that is a recently described form of adenocarcinoma. PLGA most commonly arises in the minor salivary glands. We report two cases of PLGA of the parotid gland. Case 1: A 52-year-old female visited the University of Tsukuba Hospital with a painless mass in the left parotid region. A superficial parotidectomy and postoperative radiotherapy were performed. The patient has been free from disease for 50 months. Case 2: A 55-year-old female initially noticed a painless slowly growing mass in the left parotid region

Salivary gland tuberculosis is a rare pathology and does not always have the diagnostic guidelines led by previous tubercular localizations. Tubercular bacillus can reach the salivary gland in different ways, but the condition that most frequently causes a tubercular infection is the decay of the human organism defensive capacity toward the germ.A 15-year-old Romanian boy presented with a swelling in the left submandibular region. Normal extraoral, intraoral examination, and routine diagnostic examinations were performed. In order to make a final diagnosis, we performed a surgical left submand

We report a case of acinic cell adenocarcinoma of the parotid in a 18-year-old young man. Clinical examination showed a firm mobile mass of the gland. Light microscopy revealed the tumor composed of two distinct cell populations: a main one with large, polyhedrical or round cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and a smaller proportion of granular cytoplasm clear cells. These tumor cells were periodic acid Schiff reaction (PAS) and mucicarmine staining negative. Immunohistochemically tumor main cells exhibited diffuse positive reactivity for cytokeratin and focal for S-100 protein. Both reactions

INTRODUCTION: The role of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the management of parotid tumours is still the subject of controversy. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of FNAC in our institution in order to define its place in the diagnostic strategy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was based on 249 patients who had undergone preoperative FNAC before being operated in our institution between 2001 and 2008. All examinations were performed and interpreted by the same experienced pathologist.
RESULTS: Among the 249 patients included in this stud

BACKGROUND Benign pleomorphic adenoma is the most common primary tumor of the salivary glands and mainly arises in the parotid gland. Warthin's tumor, or papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, represents <30% of benign parotid tumors. The simultaneous occurrence of multiple parotid tumors is rarely described - depending on the corresponding histology (different/identical), the time of their occurrence (synchronous/metachronous), as well as their location (unilateral/bilateral), multiple parotid tumors can be further sub-classified. CASE REPORT We describe the case of a 54-year-old female patient

PURPOSE: The goal of the present study was to assess the association between intraparotid lymph node (IPN) metastasis and prognosis in high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the parotid gland.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with surgically treated primary high-grade MEC of the parotid gland were retrospectively enrolled. The association between IPN metastasis and clinicopathologic variables was analyzed using χ2 tests, and recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method; independent prognostic factors were evaluated by the Cox proportional hazards method.

The principle of modern oncological surgery is to conserve the functional organs or tissues as much as possible based on eradication of the tumour. For salivary gland tumours, conservative and functional salivary surgery, including partial sialoadenectomy as well as anatomical and functional preservation of the facial nerve, great auricular nerve, superficial musculo-aponeurotic system (SMAS), and Stensen's duct, has become increasingly popular. In the present review, we discuss the following aspects of conservative and functional surgery in the treatment of salivary gland tumours: (i) partial

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative radiotherapy is recommended for all patients with cutaneous and non-cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck in the presence of clinical and incidental perineural infiltration. Perineural infiltration represents one of the most important adverse prognostic factors and may impact negatively patient outcomes. While guidelines exist for defining radiotherapy treatment volumes in patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and clinical perineural infiltration, there is a notable gap in the literature regarding recommendations for cases with incidental

The aim of this study was to perform a systematic literature review of Merkel cell carcinomas (MCCs) originating exclusively in the ear, nose and throat (ENT) district. An appropriate string was run on PubMed to retrieve articles dealing with ENT presentations of MCC. A double cross-check was performed on citations and full-text articles found using the selected inclusion and exclusion criteria. In total, 43 articles were finally included in the study, describing 51 cases of MCC involving the ENT region: 22/51 (43%) cases involving the ear; 20/51 (39%) cases involving the mucosal sites; 9/51 (

Schwannomas may rarely arise from the facial nerve and most commonly occur in the intratemporal part of the nerve. Extratemporal facial nerve schwannomas are extremely rare. Intraparotid schwannomas usually develop in adults and only one pediatric case has hitherto been reported. Herein, we reported the second case of facial nerve schwannoma in a 7-year-old boy who presented with a slow growing, painless preauricular mass of three-year history. Superficial parotid ultrasonography revealed a solid mass with homogenous echogenicity originating from the superficial parotid lobe. There was no faci

Oncocytic tumors rarely occur in major salivary glands and generally account for less than 1% of all salivary tumors. Oncocytomas are infrequent tumors that most commonly arise in the salivary, thyroid, parathyroid and pituitary glands, kidneys and pancreas. They are rarely malignant. Oncocytic differentiation may also occur focally in a benign or a malignant epithelial tumor, such as a thyroid adenoma, papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum and mixed tumors of salivary glands, malignant carcinoids of the bronchus, adrenal cortical carcinoma, and renal cell carcinoma. The term oncocytoma refers t
