A retrospective study of 35 patients who underwent early facial reanimation following extirpative parotid and temporal bone surgery requiring facial nerve sacrifice was performed. Regional facial reanimation performed immediately or within several days included 16 patients who underwent temporalis muscle transposition and 27 who underwent gold weight or eyespring lid reanimation with lower lid tightening. Simultaneous nerve grafts or nerve crossover procedures were performed in 22 patients. The authors' favored approaches to facial reanimation are discussed, with an emphasis on the value of ea

173 patients treated for melanoma (stage I or II) were followed up for 8 to 10 years. The distribution pattern of metastases discovered during the follow-up period was studied. The main localizations in order of decreasing frequency were: regional lymph nodes. local recurrences, skin metastases (including transit metastases), lung, liver, brain, bone, parotid, mediastinum, bowel. mesenterium, stomach, adrenals, larynx and ovary. The data strongly suggest that efficient follow-up of malignant melanoma patients should include regular X-rays, liver, bone and brain scans, and in some cases, laparo

BACKGROUND: Warthin tumor (WT) is a common benign salivary tumor of the parotid gland. Clinically, it occurs in men in their fifth to seventh decades who typically smoke cigarettes. WTs have been reported with different head and neck neoplasms and other salivary gland tumors within the same or another salivary gland. Kimura disease (KD) is a rare chronic inflammatory disease with unknown etiology affecting young to middle-aged Asian men. KD presents as an asymptomatic nodule in the head and neck area, with regional lymphadenopathy and salivary gland involvement.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma from the head and neck typically metastasize to the lymph nodes of the neck and parotid glands. When a primary is not identified, they are difficult to distinguish from metastases of mucosal origin and primary salivary gland squamous cell carcinoma. UV radiation causes a mutation pattern that predominantly features cytosine to thymine transitions at dipyrimidine sites and has been associated with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. In this study, we used whole genome sequencing data from 15 cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma metastases and show that a UV mutatio

Sebaceous carcinoma is an infrequent tumor of tardy increase, locally aggressive, potentially recurrent, with natural propensity for metastasize, both loco-regional or remote (lymphogenous or hematogenus metastases). Principal sitting are the annexed glands to ocular sense (Zeis glands and specially Meibomian's). Its origin in salivary glands is exceedingly uncommon, only those arising in the parotid have been reported. Our contribution are 2 cases which source were the sublingual gland and a minor palatine salivary gland, respectively. The perusal of the literature has been negative: no one p

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a "low-risk" subset of patients with regional metastatic head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) suitable for treatment with surgery alone and omission of adjuvant radiotherapy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 168 patients with a single parotid gland or neck nodal metastasis ≤3 cm in size from cutaneous SCC treated with curative intent by surgery ± adjuvant radiotherapy.
RESULTS: Disease-specific survival for the 33 patients treated with surgery alone was 97% at 5 years. In the subset of 1

Of 230 melanoma patients treated during the past 8 years, 12 (5.2%) were found to have unknown primary lesions. Nine of these "unknown primary melanoma' patients presented with metastases in regional lymph nodes, one inside the parotid gland, and two presented with disseminated melanoma and no detectable primary tumor. The patients with melanoma confined to a regional lymph node underwent block dissection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Four patients with metastasis in only one lymph node are disease free 4-6 years after diagnosis. One patient with multiple metastases in t

Two cases of biopsy-proven conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) that developed local and regional spread are described. The cases involved a 65-year-old woman and a 79-year-old man who were initially treated at outside institutions for SCC of the conjunctiva. The patients did not have a history of immune compromise. The female patient presented with direct extension into the lacrimal gland but deferred recommended exenteration. Despite eventual exenteration, she developed metastasis to a neck node 6 months later, which was treated with radiotherapy. The male patient presented with local

Kimura's disease is a rare chronic inflammatory condition of uncertain etiology which has an affinity for the Asian population. It primarily involves the head and neck region, presenting as deep subcutaneous masses and is often accompanied by regional lymphadenopathy and salivary gland involvement. Peripheral blood eosinophilia and elevated serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels are characteristic features and the microscopic picture reveals lymphoid proliferation with eosinophilic infiltration. For years, Kimura's disease was believed to be identical to or part of the same disease spectrum as an

An 82-year-old woman presented with perforating abscesses in the cervical and axillary region over 7 months. Histopathological and extensive microbiological examinations lead to the diagnosis of tuberculosis cutis colliquativa, a form of postprimary cutaneous tuberculosis. Tuberculosis cutis colliquativa can be caused by either contiguous spread from an underlying structure, direct inoculation or hematogenous dissemination. Morphologically it is characterized by a subcutaneous node forming an abscess with secondary perforation of overlying skin. The parotid, submandibular, and supraclavicular

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a rare slow-growing malignant tumour with a deceptively benign histologic appearance. It typically involves young or middle-aged adults. These tumours usually occur in the proximal extremities and trunk. Sporadically they may be found in unusual locations leading to diagnostic dilemma. We report a 5year old boy that presented with painless right parotid swelling of 6 weeks duration. There was a 12-week presentation-to-diagnosis delay, due to the initial misdiagnosis as Burkitt's lymphoma that was entertained because of the region involved, rate of progr

Hemangioma is a relatively common benign proliferation of blood vessel that primarily develops during childhood. It is a most common benign tumor of vascular origin is the region of head and neck. The common sites are lips, tongue, buccal mucosa, and palate in oral cavity. Due to aesthetic concern and appearance problems of the hemangioma of lower lip and face it requires appropriate management. This is a case report of a rare hemangioma of lower lip and face bilaterally with involvement of mandible, floor of mouth, oropharynx, anterior 2/3rd of tongue parotid/submandibular glands in a 46-year

RATIONALE: The aim of this work is to describe the case of a large abscess associated with a sialolith in the parotid duct.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Patient's concern is evident in this pathology, because infection untreated or rapidly spreading infections can be potentially life-threatening secondary to airway compromise or septicemia.
DIAGNOSIS: Clinical examination, ultrasonography of the region, and cone beam computed tomography were requested to confirm the diagnosis of a sialolith associated with a large abscess.
TREATMENT: Antibiotic therapy with extraoral drainage was performed. After remi

Fat hypertrophy is a less commonly known complication of autologous fat transfer. We present a 32-year-old female with left hemifacial atrophy associated with systemic sclerosis, who was treated with 7 fat transfer procedures to correct the facial asymmetry. A total of 236.5 mL of fat was injected to the hemiface over a 4-year period to achieve good symmetry. A progressively enlarging, painless, soft mass over the left parotid region was noted at 3 months after the final fat transfer procedure. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a markedly enlarged bulk of subcutaneous fat over the left cheek w…

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an emerging clinical disease entity characterized by tumefactive lesions at multiple sites with a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate rich in IgG4+ plasma cells. Although almost any organ can be affected, IgG4-RD is most likely to involve the submandibular, lacrimal, or parotid glands in the head and neck region. However, skull base involvement presenting as otogenic skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is rare. We encountered a 70-year-old male with IgG4-RD presenting primarily with severe otalgia and otorrhea. He had uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and showed clinic

Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) is a common malignant tumor in the oral and maxillofacial region and accounts for approximately 3%-5% of all head and neck carcinomas. SACC always occurs in the palatal salivary gland and parotid gland. The tumor has the characteristics of strong invasion, perineural invasion, high hematogenous metastasis, and low lymph node metastasis rate. The biological characteristics of SACC determine the specificity of clinical treatment. Thus far, few clinical trials have investigated the efficacy of systemic therapy owing to the rarity of SACC with lung metastas

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is often the first investigation in the work up of salivary gland lesions. However, its diagnostic accuracy is limited by the high rates of false positives and false negatives. Usually, acinic cell carcinoma is prone to be underdiagnosed because of the cytological similarity of the tumor cells to normal acinar cells, however rarely, a predominant papillary architecture on cytology may cause confusion with adenocarcinomas. We present a case of a 45-year-old male with a painful swelling of the right parotid region. FNA smears revealed a predominant papillar…

Angiomyoma is a rare benign tumor originated from vascular smooth muscle cells, in other words, the tunica media, and the characteristic is the detection of numerous blood vessels together with spindle-shape smooth muscle cells. In most cases, it occurs in the subcutaneous tissue of the limbs, especially in the lower limbs, but it is very rare that it occurs in the head and neck area. In the head and neck area, it is developed most frequently in the larynx and the turbinates, and in addition, the development in the oral cavity (lip, hard palate, tonsil), nose, ear, cheek, parotid gland, and su
