Emotion recognition patterns in patients with panic disorder.

Recognition of facially expressed emotions is essential in social interaction. For patients with social phobia, general anxiety disorders, and comorbid anxiety, deficits in their emotion recognition and specific biases have already been reported. This is the first study to investigate facial emotion recognition patterns in patients with panic disorder [PD]. We assumed a general performance deficit in patients with PD. Exploratory analyses should have revealed recognition patterns and specific types of errors. Additionally, we checked the influence of depression and anxiety symptoms, per se, on

Stress and delusions in postgraduate medical students: the mediating role of anxiety and depression and the moderating role of trait impulsivity.

Postgraduate medical students face tremendous stress from multiple sources, which not only affects their professional performance, but may also have a wide and deep impact on their mental health through the intervention of affective states like depression and anxiety, and modulating factors such as personal impulsivity. Notably, this complex process of influence may increase the likelihood of certain psycho-pathological symptoms (e.g. delusions). However, this complex network of relationships and its specific mechanisms of action still require more field studies to validate and elucidate. This

The role of anxiety in modulating temporal processing and sensory hyperresponsiveness in autism spectrum disorder: an fMRI study.

The atypical sensory features and high comorbidity of anxiety disorders in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are attracting increasing attention. Among individuals with ASD, those who exhibit heightened sensory hyperresponsiveness tend to show enhanced temporal processing of sensory stimuli, despite no observed differences in stimulus detection thresholds. A previous study reported the role of anxiety in modulating emotion-cued changes of visual temporal resolution in ASD. Building on this, we hypothesized that elevated anxiety might contribute to increased activation of neural c

Lack of Acute Agomelatine Effect in a Model of Social Anxiety in Healthy Volunteers: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Agomelatine is an antidepressant drug that acts as an agonist of melatoninergic MT1/2 receptors and an antagonist of serotonergic 5-HT2C receptors. Studies suggest that agomelatine has anxiolytic properties in social anxiety, but there are no studies that assessed the effects of this compound in human experimental anxiety induced by a public speaking test. The objective of our investigation was to assess the effects of agomelatine on human experimental anxiety using the Simulation Public Speaking Test (SPST). METHODS: Agomelatine (25 mg, n = 14), citalopram (20 mg, n = 14), venlaf

Modulation of anxiety behavior by intranasally administered vaccinia virus complement control protein and curcumin in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Widespread neuroinflammation in the central nervous system (CNS) of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, involving pro-inflammatory mediators such as complement components, might be responsible for AD associated behavioral symptoms such as anxiety. Vaccinia virus complement control protein (VCP) and curcumin (Cur) are the bioactive compounds of natural origin shown to inhibit the in-vitro complement activation. In order to develop complement regulatory compounds which could be delivered to the CNS by a non-invasive route, VCP, its truncated version (tVCP), and Cur were administered to Wistar rat

Predicting the strength of next-day negative emotion states in body dysmorphic disorder using passive smartphone data: An intensive longitudinal assessment study.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a debilitating and common psychiatric illness associated with high rates of suicide and substance use disorders. Negative emotions - particularly shame and anxiety - are elevated in BDD and correlate with suicide risk and substance use. It is critical to have reliable and valid tools to assess negative emotions in BDD. Retrospective self-reports are subject to recall biases, average one's experiences over broad time frames, and are burdensome to complete. Alternatively, sensor-based digital phenotyping has potential to yield low-burden emotion assessment withi

Corticosterone disrupts spatial working memory during retention testing when highly taxed, which positively correlates with depressive-like behavior in middle-aged, ovariectomized female rats.

Major Depressive Disorder affects 8.4 % of the U.S. population, particularly women during perimenopause. This study implemented a chronic corticosterone manipulation (CORT, a major rodent stress hormone) using middle-aged, ovariectomized female rats to investigate depressive-like behavior, anxiety-like symptoms, and cognitive ability. CORT (400 μg/ml, in drinking water) was administered for four weeks before behavioral testing began and continued throughout all behavioral assessments. Compared to vehicle-treated rats, CORT significantly intensified depressive-like behaviors: CORT decreased suc

Disorder-specific impaired neurocognitive function in major depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are both highly prevalent and comorbid psychiatric disorders. Neurocognitive dysfunction has been commonly found in MDD, but the findings in GAD are inconsistent. Few studies have directly compared cognitive performance between GAD and MDD. Therefore, the present study aimed to reveal the similar and distinct cognitive impairments between both disorders. METHODS: Three non-overlapping and non-comorbid groups were enrolled in the current study including patients with GAD (n = 37), MDD (n = 107) and healthy contr

Effects of Four Different EEG-Neurofeedback Reinforcement Types in Healthy Individuals - A Pilot Study.

EEG neurofeedback (EEG-NFB) is a promising tool for the treatment of depressive disorders. However, many methods for the presentation of neurobiological reactions are available and it is widely unknown which of these feedback options are preferrable. Moreover, the influence of motivation on NFB training success is insufficiently studied. This study analyzed the efficacy of a novel EEG protocol (FC3/Pz) based on findings for NFB in depression. The role of four feedback options (Rumination, Anxiety, Meditation Master, Moving Art) from the NFB software "Brain Assistant" and motivation in EEG-base

Investigation of the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation and neurofeedback by continuous performance test.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique based on weak direct current stimulation through the scalp. Neurofeedback (NFB) is a learning strategy that may help alter to brain wave parameters, by monitoring electroencephalography (EEG) feedback via special programs. We aimed to investigate the supportive effects of tDCS in addition to NFB training. 16 healthy volunteers were divided equally into two groups. One of the groups was trained by NFB with the sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) protocol; 2 days per week, 10 sessions of 30 min, the other group recei

Inflammation modulates anxiety in an animal model of multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by inflammation, but also degenerative changes. Besides neurological deficits, the rate of affective disorders such as depression and anxiety is at least six fold increased. Many aspects of MS can be mimicked in the animal model of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (MOG-EAE). Here we investigate behavioral changes in C57BL/6 mice suffering from mild MOG-EAE. In the later phase of the disease, mice were subjected to behavioral tests including th
