Hydrodynamic control of cadmium retention and bioaccumulation in a temperate estuary.

Understanding the sources, transport, and persistence of pollutants in estuarine systems is essential for assessing ecological risk and supporting effective management. Whilst cadmium (Cd), a persistent trace-metal in coastal waters, presents a challenge due to its toxicity and high capacity for bioaccumulation in benthic organisms, its cycling is well-understood compared to other heavy metals. In this study, we combine available Cd observations with numerical modeling to develop a first three-dimensional, system-scale model of dissolved Cd dispersal and bioaccumulation in blue mussels (Mytilu

Ecotoxicological effects of cadmium on Echinometra mathaei: Oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and biochemical responses.

Cadmium (Cd), a non-essential heavy metal, poses a persistent threat to marine ecosystems. The edible sea urchin Echinometra mathaei, widely recognized as a sentinel species, was used to evaluate the effects of environmentally relevant Cd exposure. These organisms were exposed to 0, 0.01, and 0.1 mg L-1 Cd for 28 days, and gonadal tissues were analyzed for Ca content, oxidative stress biomarkers (H₂O₂, MDA, SOD, CAT), protein and carbohydrate reserves, and genotoxic endpoints (tail intensity, tail moment, tail factor). Cd accumulated progressively in gonads, coinciding with calcium depletion,

Conventional and biodegradable microplastics exhibit divergent photodegradation pathways modulated by iron oxide phases.

The photodegradation of microplastics is differentially regulated by specific iron oxide (FeOx) phases, but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we examined how ferrihydrite (Fh) and hematite (Hem) mediated the phototransformation of conventional polystyrene (PS) versus biodegradable poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). The results indicated that degradation pathway was fundamentally determined by polymer chemical structure and finely regulated by oxide phase. PS underwent surface passivation during the photodegradation suppressing mass loss, showing 7.05% and 4.81% lower mass

Theoretical study on the mechanisms, kinetics and risk assessment of OH radicals and Cl atom initiated transformation of HCFC-235fa in the atmosphere.

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are important greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances. Thus, a thorough understanding of their atmospheric fate is essential for preventing and controlling atmospheric pollution. Herein, the atmospheric transformation mechanism of CF3CH2CClF2 (HCFC-235fa) by the OH radical and the Cl atom was carried out at the dual-level of CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p). The reaction rate coefficients were calculated using the multistructural canonical variational transition state theory with small curvature tunneling (MS-CVT/SCT) at 200-1000 K. The kMS-CVT/

[Research progress on analytical methods for the determination of hexachlorobutadiene].

Hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) is one of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) listed in Annex A and Annex C of the Stockholm Convention in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Research on the sources, environmental occurrences, and biological effects of HCBD has a great significance in controlling this newly added POPs. Sensitive and credible methods for the determination of HCBD are preconditions and form the basis for related research work. In recent years, many researchers have included HCBD as one of the analytes in monitoring or methodological studies. Based on the results of these studies, this pape…

Photocatalytic dissipation of kresoxim methyl from soil using zinc oxide nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, and kinetic studies.

Kresoxim methyl fungicide is commonly used to prevent fungal diseases in fruits, vegetables, and other plants. However, its toxicity and persistence in soil and water raise significant environmental concerns. Reducing its concentration in soil is essential to limit its movement to surface and ground water systems. In this context, semiconductor metal nanoparticles; specifically, ZnO nanoparticles, have emerged as promising agents for rapid degradation of organic pollutants, including pesticides. However, their photocatalytic performance in soil systems remains underexplored compared with that

Thyroid Hormone Disruption and Developmental Toxicity of Diuron and Irgarol 1051 in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Larvae.

Antifouling biocides are marine pollutants intentionally used on vessels and are frequently detected in aquatic environments. The effects of Diuron and Irgarol 1051 (Irgarol), persistent antifouling biocides in the marine environment, on various aquatic organisms remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated whether Diuron and Irgarol disrupt thyroid hormone function in fish, using zebrafish larvae as a model. Both compounds induced reductions in survival and hatching rates. Notably, Diuron caused edema and posterior swim bladder noninflation even at a concentration as low as

Multi-dimensional insights into the association between PFOA exposure and NAFLD: An integrative analysis of epidemiology, transcriptomics, and molecular docking.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a persistent organic pollutant from the PFAS family, is widely detected in the environment and human blood, raising significant concerns about its long-term health effects. This study explores the potential association between serum PFOA exposure and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by integrating data from the NHANES 2003-2012 cohort, global disease burden data (GBD 2021), and toxicogenomic analyses. Weighted logistic regression revealed that individuals in the highest tertile of PFOA exposure had a significantly increased risk of NAFLD (adjusted OR = 1

Occurrence and identification of Bacillus thuringiensis in fresh vegetables and fruits in France.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-based plant protection products are among the most widely used biopesticides in the world, thereby reducing the use of synthetic pesticides in the interest of limiting potential environmental toxicity or pollution. However, recent concerns about food safety call for better characterization of the potential risk associated with Bt and thus an estimation of exposure to this spore-forming bacterium through food. Here, we made an inventory of the use of Bt-based products in France and then carried out a prevalence study on 159 organic fruit and vegetable samples. Our re

Density Functional Theory Study of Methylene Blue Demethylation as a Key Step in Degradation Mediated by Reactive Oxygen Species.

Methylene blue (MB), a widely used organic dye, poses significant environmental challenges due to its stability and persistence in aquatic ecosystems. This study employs density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the demethylation mechanisms of MB mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS), a critical initial step in its photocatalytic degradation. Computational analyses reveal that demethylation is energetically favorable, particularly when mediated by hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and hydroxyl ions (OH-) with reaction energies of -154 kcal/mol and -214 kcal/mol, respectively. These pathways lea

Cellular Uptake and Tissue Retention of Microplastics in Black Soldier Fly Larvae.

Microplastic pollution is a pressing global concern, yet its immunotoxicological impacts on invertebrates remain poorly understood. The Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larva has gained attention for its role in waste management and potential bioremediation, making it essential to evaluate its interactions with microplastics. In this study, fluorescent carboxylate-modified polystyrene microbeads were directly injected into the hemocoel of larvae to bypass gut-associated variables and investigate systemic immune responses. Experimental groups were analyzed at multiple time points (1 h, 6 h

Recent advances in the application of magnetic materials for the management of perfluoroalkyl substances in aqueous phases.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of artificially synthesised organic compounds extensively used in both industrial and consumer products owing to their unique characteristics. However, their persistence in the environment and potential risk to health have raised serious global concerns. Therefore, developing effective techniques to identify, eliminate, and degrade these pollutants in water are crucial. Owing to their high surface area, magnetic responsiveness, redox sensitivity, and ease of separation, magnetic materials have been considered for the treatment of PFASs from water i

Characterization of pumilacidin, a lipopeptide biosurfactant produced from Bacillus pumilus NITDID1 and its prospect in bioremediation of hazardous pollutants.

Highly hydrophobic compounds like petroleum and their byproducts, once released into the environment, can persist indefinitely by virtue of their ability to resist microbial degradation, ultimately paving the path to severe environmental pollution. Likewise, the accumulation of toxic heavy metals like lead, cadmium, chromium, etc., in the surroundings poses an alarming threat to various living organisms. To remediate the matter in question, the applicability of a biosurfactant produced from the mangrove bacterium Bacillus pumilus NITDID1 (Accession No. KY678446.1) is reported here. The structu

Selective, stepwise photodegradation of chlorothalonil, dichlobenil and dichloro- and trichloro-isophthalonitriles enhanced by cyanidin in water.

Chlorothalonil, a widely used chloroisophthalonitrile fungicide, is highly toxic to aquatic organisms and amphibians. It is essential to understand the persistence and fate of chlorothalonil in aquatic environments. Cyanidin is one of the most common phytopolyphenolics in nature and is a strong antioxidant. This study was designed to understand fate of chlorothalonil and its analogs in surface water in the presence of cyanidin under sunlight and artificial lights. The photodegradation rates of chlorothalonil were increased by 9.6, 19, 26 and 9.1 fold, respectively, under solar, high-pressure m

Spiky nanohybrids of titanium dioxide/gold nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic degradation and anti-bacterial property.

We present a facile two-step procedure for synthesizing spiky nanohybrids of titanium dioxide/gold (TiO2/Au) nanoparticles. In this process, spiky TiO2 is obtained using a hydrothermal method, followed by the introduction of plasmonic Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) via a photoreduction approach in which titanium fluoride and chloroauric acid tetrahydrate are used as raw materials. The photodegradation property of the resulting sample was evaluated according to the removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) via excitation with visible light. Additionally, the antimicrobial property of the s

Nighttime Chemistry and Morning Isoprene Can Drive Urban Ozone Downwind of a Major Deciduous Forest.

Isoprene is the predominant non-methane volatile organic compound emitted to the atmosphere and shapes tropospheric composition and biogeochemistry through its effects on ozone, other oxidants, aerosols, and the nitrogen cycle. Isoprene is emitted naturally by vegetation during daytime, when its photo-oxidation is rapid, and in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx) produces ozone and degrades air quality in polluted regions. Here, we show for a city downwind of an isoprene-emitting forest (St. Louis, MO) that isoprene actually peaks at night; ambient levels then endure, owing to low nighttime

Characterization of environmentally persistent Escherichia coli isolates leached from an Irish soil.

Soils are typically considered to be suboptimal environments for enteric organisms, but there is increasing evidence that Escherichia coli populations can become resident in soil under favorable conditions. Previous work reported the growth of autochthonous E. coli in a maritime temperate Luvic Stagnosol soil, and this study aimed to characterize, by molecular and physiological means, the genetic diversity and physiology of environmentally persistent E. coli isolates leached from the soil. Molecular analysis (16S rRNA sequencing, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR, pulsed-fiel
