Neuropsychological alterations after split-brain surgery.

Neuropsychological changes following corpus callosotomy depend on the degree of the callosal section, the portion sectioned and the patient's age at the time of the surgery. Anterior section frequently results in transient hemiparesis of the non-dominant leg and temporary difficulties in initiating speech. Posterior section is followed by disconnection symptoms in the sensory modalities which can be demonstrated when input is lateralized and one hemisphere is denied access to the information received by the other. Visual and tactile stimuli presented to the non-dominant hemisphere are no longe

The Last and Weiss Rorschach Sum E in a normal sample.

For 62 undergraduate women correlations of Rorschach Sum E with scores on 16 PF, Barron's MMPI Ego Strength Scale, the Eagly Self-esteem Scale, Kaplan's Self-derogation Scale, and MAACL. Anxiety, depression, and hostility showed FC+ was the only Sum E component associated with adaptive functioning and so Sum E is of limited usefulness.

Do students with dyslexia have a different personality profile as measured with the big five?

BACKGROUND: Few studies are available about the personality profile of higher education students with dyslexia and to which extent this could be any different from their non-dyslexic peers. AIMS AND SAMPLES: To obtain empirical evidence, we compared the personality profile of a group of 100 Dutch-speaking students with dyslexia with that of a control group of 100 students without learning disabilities. METHODS: The NEO-PI-R based on the Big Five in personality research was used. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed no differences in the personality between both groups. This agrees with

The relationship between personality traits, sex, age, performance level, and playing position in recreational handball.

BACKGROUND: This study examines associations and group differences between personality traits, age, sex, performance level, and playing position in recreational handball players using the five-factor model. METHODS: One hundred eighty-three handball players (114 female, 69 male; mean age = 26.4 ± 11.2 years), competing in leagues from 8 to 4th league, completed the NEO-FFI-30 in an online survey. Differences between sex, age groups, playing positions, and leagues were analyzed using t-tests and ANOVAs, with correlation and regression analyses examining relationships between traits and factors

Associations between tattooed body surface area and maladaptive personality traits in a community sample.

Evidence for personality differences between tattooed and non-tattooed adults is mixed. Assessing dimensional maladaptive traits may help clarify these associations. A community sample of adults in Cyprus (N = 280; M = 28.0, SD = 9.5; range 18 to 64) completed the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Brief Form Adult (PID-5-BF) and a Tattoo Coverage Tool estimating the percentage of body surface area tattooed (tBSA). Analyses included t-tests, correlations, and hierarchical regressions controlling for age, sex, and socioeconomic status. More than half (58.6%) of the participants reported having at

Ethnic Variations in Temporomandibular Disorder Symptoms, Oral Behaviours, Personality Traits, and Psychosocial Profiles Among Young Adults: Insights From a Comparative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although psychosocial and behavioural factors in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are well documented, ethnic variations remain underexplored, particularly within multiracial populations. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare TMD symptoms, oral behaviours, and psychosocial characteristics across ethnic groups, examine interrelationships between physical-psychosocial variables, and identify factors influencing TMD pain and oral behaviours in young adults. METHODS: Participants, recruited from a large public university, completed an online survey comprising sociodemographic inf

Clinical and neurocognitive correlates of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder symptoms: A transdiagnostic study in individuals with compulsive behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is characterized by a lifelong pattern of excessive attention to detail, rigidity and perfectionism. Although OCPD was historically linked to Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRDs), this connection lacks consistent evidence. Compulsive behaviors, core to OCRDs, are repetitive actions aimed at reducing distress. To elucidate mechanistic links between OCPD and compulsive behaviors, this study examined relationships between OCPD traits, OCRD symptom domains, and cognitive functioning. METHODS: In a transdiagnostic sample of

Epistemic trust and associations with psychopathology: Validation of the German version of the Epistemic Trust, Mistrust and Credulity-Questionnaire (ETMCQ).

Epistemic trust, defined as trust in socially transmitted knowledge, is discussed as a psychopathological factor in the context of new transdiagnostic approaches for the assessment of mental disorders. The aim of this study is to test the factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity of the German version of the new Epistemic Trust, Mistrust and Credulity-Questionnaire (ETMCQ). Data were collected cross-sectionally from the German-speaking general population (N = 584) and in a second sample of clinical (n = 30) and non-clinical (n = 30) participants. The previously proposed three-factor str

The possible etiological role of psychological disturbances in Graves' disease.

In the discussion of possible factors in the etiology of Graves' disease, stress has always played a major role. We investigated the possible influence of present depression (depressivity scale DS) and anxiety (State Trait Angstinventar STAI X1) on peripheral lymphocyte subpopulations in 10 patients with Graves' disease. The tests were done in hyperthyroidism and after 2-4 months in stable euthyroidism. Parallel to the psychometric testing, peripheral lymphocyte subpopulations were investigated. Elevated anxiety as a constant personality trait was investigated with the State Trait Angstinventa

BAS-drive trait modulates dorsomedial striatum activity during reward response-outcome associations.

According to the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory, behavioral studies have found that individuals with stronger reward sensitivity easily detect cues of reward and establish faster associations between instrumental responses and reward. Neuroimaging studies have shown that processing anticipatory cues of reward is accompanied by stronger ventral striatum activity in individuals with stronger reward sensitivity. Even though establishing response-outcome contingencies has been consistently associated with dorsal striatum, individual differences in this process are poorly understood. Here, we aim

Is the subjective perception of lactose intolerance influenced by the psychological profile?

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of lactose intolerance are often attributed to lactose malabsorption but, as this relationship has not been demonstrated when a small dose of lactose similar to that contained in one cup of milk is ingested by intolerant patients, psychological factors may play a role in altered symptom perception. AIM: To assess the hypothesis that the psychological profile influences the symptoms of lactose intolerance. METHODS: One hundred and two consecutive patients underwent a 15 g lactose hydrogen breath test to assess lactose malabsorption. The patients recorded the presence and

Emotional, cognitive and physiological correlates of abuse-related stress in borderline and antisocial personality disorder.

Childhood abuse is an important precursor of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). The current study compared the emotional reactivity to abuse-related stress of these patients on a direct and an indirect level. Changes in self-reported affect and schema modes, psychophysiology and reaction time based cognitive associations were assessed following confrontation with an abuse-related film fragment in patients with BPD (n=45), ASPD (n=21), Cluster C personality disorder (n=46) and non-patient controls (n=36). Results indicated a hyperresponsivity of BP

Personality assessment based on the five-factor model of personality structure in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Several characteristic personality types have been reported for glaucoma patients in previous studies. However, none of the previous studies used a common structural theory of personality. In this study, we conducted a multicenter cross-sectional case-control study using the recently established five-factor model of personality structure. METHODS: Personality was evaluated using the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), which is a questionnaire specifically designed to test the five-factor model of personality: neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), openness

Avoidant and dependent personality traits in relatives of patients with panic disorder, patients with dependent personality disorder, and normal controls.

Psychiatric researchers have long wondered whether personality traits might predispose toward or be integral to Axis I illnesses. The question is difficult to address because acute illness can either create personality traits or distort their measurement. The present study bypassed that problem by examining personality traits in relatives of patients. Panic disorder, dependent personality disorder, and control subjects were the proband groups. A cluster of traits that appeared to reflect low social self-confidence combined with a desire for social interaction occurred significantly more often

The Relationship between the Level of Anterior Cingulate Cortex Metabolites, Brain-Periphery Redox Imbalance, and the Clinical State of Patients with Schizophrenia and Personality Disorders.

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder whose course varies with periods of deterioration and symptomatic improvement without diagnosis and treatment specific for the disease. So far, it has not been possible to clearly define what kinds of functional and structural changes are responsible for the onset or recurrence of acute psychotic decompensation in the course of schizophrenia, and to what extent personality disorders may precede the appearance of the appropriate symptoms. The work combines magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging with clinical evaluation and laboratory tests to determin

Nightmares in crisis: clinical applications of lucid dreaming techniques.

A patient in crisis was offered treatment with a major focus on alleviating nightmares using lucid dreaming (dreaming while knowing that one is dreaming). Of sixty-eight non-psychotic patients seen consecutively in a psychiatry emergency room, she was one of 16 (23.5%) found to have a concurrent complaint of nightmares (dream anxiety disorder). The benefits of the skills developed with lucid dreaming extended into areas other than nightmares as the patient entered psychotherapy. The techniques appeared to play a role in the reduction of nightmare frequency, intensity, and distress, and to enha

Additional psychiatric illness by Diagnostic Interview Schedule in male alcoholics.

Seventy-four male veterans entering an alcohol abuse treatment program were screened for additional psychiatric diagnoses using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Fifty-four of these also completed a questionnaire on personal and family drinking history. Over half (54.1%) had another diagnosis. The most common syndromes other than substance abuse were antisocial personality disorder, phobic disorder, and depression. In each of these cases, the presence of the additional disorder accelerated the course of the alcohol problem significantly. The difference in course between syndromes was dw
