Chikungunya fever's chromatic chronicle: a kaleidoscope of pigmentary alterations.

Chikungunya fever (CKF), a neglected tropical disease caused by the chikungunya virus, manifests with skin pigmentary changes in a significant portion of people. A myriad of pigmentary alterations in individuals with CKF have been documented in the literature. This review highlights the pathogenesis, clinical features, histopathology, diagnosis and treatment of CKF-associated pigmentation. Notable presentations include the 'Chik sign' often seen in neonates and children. Treatment involves reassurance and topical agents for persistent pigmentation. Understanding these pigmentary changes is cru

Diet-induced carotenodermia: a literature review.

Carotenodermia is a yellow to orange skin discoloration due to epidermal deposition of carotene. This can be due to an abnormality in the conversion of β-carotene to vitamin A, hyperlipidemia, or high dietary carotene intake. Here, I review approximately 100 previous cases of carotenodermia in humans due to high β-carotene intake. This literature review revealed that in carotenodermia associated with high β-carotene intake the discoloration tends to be widespread, mainly in thick areas of the skin (e.g., the palm of the hand), and can last from 14 days to 4.5 years. This review provides a deta

Carotenoderma due to lycopenemia: A case report and evaluation of lycopene deposition in the skin.

Carotenoderma is a yellow-orange coloration of the skin caused by high levels of serum carotenoids, mostly due to the excessive intake of carotenoid-rich foods. The yellowish coloration is typically observed on the palms, soles, and nasolabial folds. Although the physical appearance is prominent, the condition itself is benign and harmless. Diagnosing carotenoderma is not difficult because of its unique manifestations, but its pathophysiology remains unclear. We report a relatively rare case of carotenoderma due to lycopenemia caused by the excessive intake of lycopene-rich vegetables and frui

Treatment of pigmentary disorders using picosecond laser in Asian patients: A meta-analysis and systematic review.

There were many studies evaluating the effect of picosecond (PS) lasers, but no meta-analysis examined the effects of PS laser in the treatment of pigmentary disorders in Asians. The aim of this article was to review the before-after effect of PS laser in Asians for the treatment of pigmentary disorders. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library were searched for articles published up to May 2020. The evaluations were summarized into a 4-point scale that ranged from <25% (poor), 25%-50% (fair), 50%-75% (good), and 75%-100% (excellent). Effect sizes (ESs) were calculated according to laser wavelengt

Secukinumab-induced multiple lentigines in areas of resolved psoriatic plaques: A case report and literature review.

Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disease commonly associated with postinflammatory hyper- and hypo-pigmentation. Psoriasis-related cytokines such as IL-17 and TNF can contribute to these pigmentation changes by regulating both the growth and pigment production of melanocytes. Here, we present the first reported the case of a patient with a 10-year history of severe psoriasis vulgaris, who developed multiple lentigines in areas of resolved psoriatic plaques during anti-IL-17A antibody secukinumab.

Treatment of the amalgam tattoo in the esthetic zone.

OBJECTIVE: When pigmentations appeared in the esthetic zone and were visible during the patient's smile, they were very disconcerting. There are multiple techniques to eradicate or ameliorate these discolorations. This article will address those pigmentations caused by amalgam particles. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Keratinized gingival grafts were used to cover and mask these pigmentations. In addition, connective tissue grafts were used to aid in the elimination of the external pigmentation. CONCLUSIONS: Both techniques were shown to be very effective in masking or eliminating these unesthetic

The use of trichloroacetic acid as a depigmenting therapy in universal vitiligo.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Several modalities have been used to clear residual facial pigmentation in patients with extensive vitiligo; however, the ideal depigmenting agent does not yet exist. The use of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) for depigmentation in universal vitiligo has been recently reported. We aim to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TCA 100 % as a depigmenting therapy for recalcitrant facial pigmentation in Egyptian patients with universal vitiligo. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 50 patients with universal vitiligo who had residual spotted pigmentation on the face causin
