The substitution of thyrectomized patients with carcinoma of the thyroid with L-thyroxin has advantages compared to a substitution with triiodothyronine, 200 mug T4/d are sufficient to obtain a negative TRH test in most patients. For security it is suggested to performe a general substitution of these patients with 300 mug T4/d. This dose is very well tolerated. To high doses of substitution cause a "damage" of the thyreotrop in a part of the patients. This is demonstrated by a transient thyreotropic insufficiency after withdrawal of the substitution. The results demonstrated here suggest that

In 10 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome the level of globulins and immunoglobulins before and after plasmapheresis was investigated. As a plasma substitute either PPL (in 8 patients) or a plasma substitute solution rich in immunoglobulins (in 2 patients) was used. When plasma was substituted with PPL, the globulins and immunoglobulins dropped to a mean of 40% of the initial value (range 30-60%) after the first plasmapheresis. With daily or alternate day plasmapheresis, the globulins only partially recovered. Before the second plasmapheresis they were still reduced to a mean of 50% (range 2

BACKGROUND: Intravenous fluid treatment of hypovolaemia in states of increased capillary permeability, e.g. sepsis, is often accompanied by adverse oedema formation. A challenge is therefore to achieve and maintain normovolaemia using as little plasma volume substitution as possible to minimise interstitial oedema. In the present study, we evaluated the importance of infusion rate for the plasma volume expanding effects of 6% dextran 70 and 5% human albumin in a guinea pig sepsis model.
METHODS: In this prospective, randomised study, 50 anaesthetised adult male Dunkin-Hartley guinea pigs were

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the degree of plasma volume expansion by 0.9% NaCl in relation to the infused volume, in sepsis/systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), after a standardized hemorrhage, and in a normal condition.
DESIGN: Prospective, randomized animal study.
SETTING: The study was performed at a university hospital laboratory.
SUBJECTS: Thirty anesthetized adult male rats were included in the study.
INTERVENTIONS: The study was performed in three groups: a sepsis/SIRS group (the S group), in which sepsis/SIRS was induced by cecal ligation and

Systemic and microvascular hemodynamic responses to hemorrhagic shock resuscitation with hypertonic saline (HTS, 7.5% NaCl) followed with a small volume of plasma expander were studied in the hamster window chamber model to determine the role of plasma expander viscosity in the acute resuscitation outcome. Moderate hemorrhagic shock was induced by arterial controlled bleeding of 50% of blood volume (BV) and the hypovolemic state was maintained for 1 h. Volume restitution was performed by infusion of HTS, 3.5% of BV followed by 10% of BV plasma expanders. Resuscitation was followed for 90 min.
