On the move: Incarceration, race, and residential mobility.

The present study examines the relationship between incarceration and post-prison residential mobility. In spite of recent research examining the residential context following incarceration, we know little about if or how incarceration affects individual patterns of residential mobility. This study starts to fill this gap in knowledge by drawing on nationally representative data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79). I find that individuals with a history of incarceration are more likely to move after prison than they are before prison. This relationship holds even after

Identity, morals, and taboos: beliefs as assets.

We develop a theory of moral behavior, individual and collective, based on a general model of identity in which people care about “who they are” and infer their own values from past choices. The model sheds light on many empirical puzzles inconsistent with earlier approaches. Identity investments respond nonmonotonically to acts or threats, and taboos on mere thoughts arise to protect beliefs about the “priceless” value of certain social assets. High endowments trigger escalating commitment and a treadmill effect, while competing identities can cause dysfunctional capital destruction. Social i

Global implications of the emergence of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Indigenous populations.

The emergence of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Australia may have been facilitated by conditions in socially disadvantaged populations--particularly, remote Australian Aboriginal communities. The appearance of community-associated MRSA was first noticed in Australia during the early 1980s; subsequently, several genetically diverse strains have independently emerged from geographically distinct regions. Molecular and epidemiological studies support the role of genetic transfer of resistance determinants (SCCmecIV) in this process. Conditions in Abori

Applying the health belief model to analyze intention to participate in preventive pulmonary tuberculosis chest X-ray examinations among indigenous nursing students.

The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge, perceptions of tuberculosis (TB) and intent to receive chest X-ray screening among indigenous (Taiwanese of ethnic Malayo-Polynesian descent) nursing students in Taiwan. A convenience sample was chosen from an technical institute in northern Taiwan that maintained admission quotas and provided scholarships for indigenous students. This school had over 150 classes and around 7,000 students, about 20% -25% of whom were ethnically indigenous. A power analysis based on a pilot study showed that a large effect size required a minimum sample of

Respiratory tract infections in the pathway to multiple myeloma: a population-based study in Scandinavia.

Encounter with infectious antigens has been proposed to initiate the cascade of events associated with progression from premalignancy (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, MGUS) to multiple myeloma (MM). We conducted a population-based case-control study to evaluate risk of developing MM associated with a personal history of various respiratory tracts infections occurring >1 year prior to MM. Inpatient (1977-1997) and outpatient (1994-1997) diagnoses were obtained for all MM patients (n=4,476) diagnosed in Denmark (1977-1997) and 16,727 matched controls. A personal history of pn

Surveillance of postneonatal mortality, United States, 1980-1987.

In the United States, one-third of all infant deaths (deaths of infants ages 0-364 days) occurs in the postneonatal period (28-364 days). A substantial proportion of these deaths potentially could be prevented. To examine recent trends in postneonatal mortality (PNM) in the United States, the investigators analyzed birth and death certificate data for resident infants for the period from 1980 through 1987. Rates of PNM declined 11% from 3.5 to 3.1/1,000 live births among white infants and declined 16% from 7.3 to 6.1/1,000 live births among black infants. Most of the decline resulted from redu

Effect of thyroid hormones from maternal milk on some measures of body growth and endocrine system in newborn sucklings.

The effect of thyroidectomy (TX) in lactating mother on the development of sucklings was studied during first 15 days of life. TX resulted in a decrease of thyroxine (T4) level in maternal milk which further resulted in a decrease of the level of T4, insulin and glucose in serum of newborns, and a decrease of body weight and of the glycogen content in liver. It is suggested that the hypoglycemia, decrease of liver glycogen and retardation of body growth under such conditions result from the inhibition of glucogenesis due to a deficiency of T4 and presumably also of GH in sucklings. These inves

Reservoir hosts of human babesiosis on Nantucket Island.

The host range of Babesia microti was studied on Nantucket Island in order to identify the enzootic reservoir of this human pathogen. White-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were more frequently parasitized than were other indigenous animals. Infection was ubiquitous in locations where deer were abundant. Mice were most frequently parasitemic during spring and summer and adults more frequently than juveniles. Parasitemia, which was rarely intense, was sustained for as long as 4 months. Mice lived as long as 10 months, and juveniles were most abundant during early summer. Prevalence of zoonotic

A population genetic study of the Vania Soni in Western India.

A total of 267 blood samples from persons belonging to the Shrimali Vania Soni caste group in Gujarat State, Western India have been analyzed for 6 blood group, 4 serum protein and 19 red cell enzyme systems, for haemoglobin and beta-thalassaemia and for red-green colour blindness. A number of rare genetic variants were detected, including a unique electrophoretically fast variant of superoxide dismutase. Genetic distance comparisons with other caste groups in Gujarat State show that Vania Soni from Surat are a distinctive group clustering with another subdivision of the Vania. The remaining V

What unhealthy food and beverage advertisements appeal to- and promote obesity amongst- adolescent children in urban South Africa?

Unhealthy food and beverage marketing is harmful to all children because it generates preferences for foods associated with obesity. Our aim was to expand knowledge about the appeal of food advertising to urban-dwelling South African teenage children. We asked 49 boys and girls aged 14-16-years-old, from three Johannesburg high schools, about food advertisements that appealed to them and their peers in six same-gender focus group discussions. We conducted thematic analysis of the discussions and content analysis of 55 advertisements that participants identified as appealing. Classic features o

Perinatal mental health and its social determinants: qualitative findings from rural Telangana.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and severity of perinatal common mental disorders (CMDs) are disproportionately high in India and other low- and middle- income contexts. Since social determinants strongly influence perinatal CMDs, they represent promising targets for alleviating the burden of disease in these countries. This study aimed to understand (1) social determinants of perinatal mental health and their concepts, context, interactions, facilitators, and impact and (2) how interventions targeting these determinants should be designed and implemented in Telangana and similar regions across rur

"She Was Real About It and Made Me Feel Life Is Important": Patient Perspectives on Peers' Role in Peer-Assisted Telemedicine Hepatitis C Treatment for People Who Use Drugs in Rural Communities.

OBJECTIVES: Telemedicine is a promising approach to reach people with limited access to treatment for hepatitis C. People who use drugs (PWUD) and are disengaged from services, however, experience barriers to telemedicine access. The Oregon HOPE TeleHCV study employed peer support specialists to provide outreach to engage PWUD, support pretreatment screening, facilitate telemedicine Hepatitis C virus visits, and assist HCV medication initiation and adherence. In our randomized controlled trial (N =203), the model demonstrated substantially higher HCV treatment initiation and cure compared with

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Hypertension Among Middle-Aged and Older Tribal Adults-Evidence from Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI).

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a global health concern, particularly among middle-aged and older adults. This study aims to fill this gap by examining hypertension prevalence and risk factors using data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI). METHODS: This study used data from the LASI, which is a nationally representative Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), wave-1 (2017-2018). Our study included a sample of 12,920 individuals from tribal communities who were aged 45 and above. A binary logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors associated with hyper

Effectiveness of a technical support program with women's self-help groups in catalyzing health and nutrition behaviors in Bihar-a multicomponent analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society launched the JEEViKA program in 2007 to improve livelihoods through the Self-Help Group (SHG) platform. Women's SHGs have shown members' health improvements by promoting awareness, practices and access to services. This study investigates whether Health & Nutrition (HN) interventions delivered by JEEViKA Technical Support Program (JTSP) via SHG platforms could improve maternal and newborn health and nutritional behaviors in rural Bihar. METHODS: Annual Household Survey and Married Women of Reproductive Age (MWRA) studies of Bihar Technic
