A Role for Visual Art Therapy in the Management of Migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Migraine is a disabling disorder that adversely affects the whole person and requires multimodal management. Through a brief historical overview of migraine as a subject for visual art, benefits reported from art therapy used in the management of other types of chronic pain, and a summary of the limited research involving art therapy for migraine, we aim to provide support for art therapy's potential role in the management of migraine. RECENT FINDINGS: As art therapy has been shown to be effective in the management of other chronic pain conditions, providing insight into th

[The humanitarian work of France in the Sahara. The Health Service of the army in the territories of Southern Algeria (1900-1976].

Medical assistance to the Saharian populations (1900-1976) is viewed through its organization. The management of the Health Service in the Southern Territories, doctors, nursing staff, medical districts, centred on infirmary-hospitals and rural first-aid posts. We insist on the everrising free consultations and the care to sick and wounded patients in infirmaries; the fight against epidemics and social scourges. Then on French medical mission from 1963 to 1976, and on the humanitarian work by the Health Service throughout the five continents.

Community health workers in low-, middle-, and high-income countries: an overview of their history, recent evolution, and current effectiveness.

Over the past half-century, community health workers (CHWs) have been a growing force for extending health care and improving the health of populations. Following their introduction in the 1970s, many large-scale CHW programs declined during the 1980s, but CHW programs throughout the world more recently have seen marked growth. Research and evaluations conducted predominantly during the past two decades offer compelling evidence that CHWs are critical for helping health systems achieve their potential, regardless of a country's level of development. In low-income countries, CHWs can make major

Differences in health self-management behaviors among residents with illnesses across remote islands with different degrees of isolation from the mainland.

Objective: Owing to geographic isolation, limited healthcare services, and aging populations, residents with illnesses living on highly isolated islands may engage more actively in health self-management. However, this assumption has not been empirically examined. The aim of this study was to compare health self-management behaviors among residents with illnesses according to the degree of island isolation. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted in clinics on four remote islands administered by Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, between July and August 2025. Participan

Eye health literacy across the world and in Australia.

Eye health literacy is an important factor in determining eye health outcomes. Ophthalmic disorders are increasingly common due to various factors associated with ageing population and other important determinants of health such as socio-economic status, environmental, cultural, individual, behavioural, and biological factors. Therefore, understanding the importance of health literacy in promoting preventive practices, early identification, and prompt management of eye diseases is critical. Currently, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration are the leading causes o

[Role of cervical smear in the diagnosis of cervical cancer in Fes-Boulemane region of Morocco].

A retrospective study was conducted between 2000 and 2003 on 1620 women (mean age 39.6 years) in northern Morocco to determine the incidence of cervical cancer and assess the value of cervical smear in the diagnosis. Patients were interviewed using a questionnaire before carrying out a gynaecological examination and taking a cervical smear sample. Of the total sample, 23.1% had an abnormal cervical smear, of whom 5.6% showed intraepithelial lesions, both low and high grade. The women presenting with cervicitis represented the highest percentage with suspect smears (30.8%); 90.9% of the smears

Effect of charted mental illness on reperfusion therapy in hospitalized patients with an acute myocardial infarction in Florida.

Patients with mental illness carry risk factors that predispose them to excess cardiovascular mortality from an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) compared to the general population. The aim of this study was to determine if patients with AMI and charted mental illness (CMI) received less reperfusion therapy following an AMI, compared to AMI patients without CMI in a recent sample population from Florida.A secondary analysis of data was conducted using the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (FL-AHCA) hospital discharge registry. Adults hospitalized with an AMI from 01/01/2010 to 12/3

Primary care issues for HIV-infected patients.

HIV primary care is determined by the intersection of the unique aspects of the infection and its treatment, the unique aspects of the populations affected by HIV, and the challenges of disease prevention and health maintenance in the general population. Any primary care provider may be called on to care for a patient living with HIV, and it is incumbent on all medical providers to become proficient in the management of this complex infection. This proficiency includes an awareness of local resources for referral, including medical and surgical specialists, mental health providers, and social

[Vitiligo and alopecia areata in children : the dermatologist's perspective].

Vitiligo and alopecia areata are chronic autoimmune dermatoses that are relatively common in the pediatric population. Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder and alopecia areata is a non-scarring alopecia. Both conditions can be highly stigmatizing and have a significant impact on the mental health and quality of life of young patients and their families. There are no large-scale prospective therapeutic studies in the pediatric population. As a result, the expertise of the pediatric dermatologist, along with shared decision-making with the patient and his/her parents, is critical for effective ma

Long-Term Management of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis in Adulthood: Clinical Challenges and Progress During the Critical Period of Pregnancy.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common three-dimensional spinal misalignment, with its impact often extending into adulthood and presenting a range of long-term health challenges. This review focuses on the long-term management strategies for adult patients with AIS and explores the unique physiological event of pregnancy and its influence on disease progression, clinical symptoms, and treatment decisions. We systematically analyze the natural history of adult AIS, the evolution of pain and functional impairment, and radiographic progression patterns. Special emphasis is plac

A qualitative study on the self-management experience and needs of postmenopausal patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease from the perspective of active health.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease is a prevalent chronic liver disease globally. Postmenopausal women may face a higher risk of developing this disease due to the metabolic changes related to menopausal transition. Although lifestyle adjustments remain the core of the care process, sustained self-management often remains highly challenging. This study, based on the theory of active health, aims to explore the self-management experience of postmenopausal women and the supportive needs. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was employed. From August to Oct

Heart Failure in Older People Part 1: Disease State Review and Lifestyle Interventions.

The care for patients with heart failure (HF) has evolved greatly over the past decade. While new guidelines have provided more clarity on categorization and staging, and novel agents have been approved for use, there are still questions surrounding the optimal strategies as they relate to diet and exercise. Additionally, overall health care costs have increased for patients, driven in part by medication therapy. Given the myriad comorbidities associated with the diagnosis of HF, senior care pharmacists are positioned to positively impact the care for patients with HF, regardless of setting. A

A 68-year-old woman with multiple NSAID-induced adverse effects.

Common comorbid conditions such as atrial fibrillation, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and osteoarthritis put geriatric patients at risk for toxicity while using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Concomitant medications also can contribute to complications associated with NSAID therapy. However, NSAID therapy is widely used for pain management in this patient population. This case describes a 68-year-old patient, with a history of hypertension and osteoarthritis, who presented with multiple NSAID-induced adverse effects. Upon admission to the hospital, this patient was fo

A review of self-care deficit theory to sexual reproductive health and rights on adolescents and young people living with HIV.

Adolescents and young people living with HIV (AYPLHIV) face unique challenges in managing their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), influenced by social, cultural and structural factors. This narrative review explores the application of Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory in SRHR programs targeting AYPLHIV. Drawing on various regional and country contexts, the review synthesizes literature to examine how theory's core concepts: person, health, environment and nursing can be used to understand and address the self-care needs and SRHR outcomes of this vulnerable population. By using th

Maximizing the scalability of the chronic disease self-management program among older adults in state correctional settings: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated individuals have high rates of chronic disease, which will likely increase as the prison population ages. Despite this, prison healthcare services primarily focus on infectious diseases, mental illness, and substance abuse, largely neglecting chronic physical health conditions. The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is an evidence-based program that supports self-management for people with chronic illnesses. Although numerous pilot studies of CDSMP have been conducted in correctional settings, there has been little research into efficient and effective str

Mechanistic analysis of COVID-19 cases in Chile during the second half of 2020: an SIR model with dynamic transmission rate.

INTRODUCTION: This article analyzes the prolonged trough phase in the epidemic curve associated with COVID-19 dynamics in Chile during the period July-December 2020, characterized by a relatively stable daily record of 1 000-2500 cases. METHODS: Unlike traditional (, )-SIR models, with constant parameters and associated respectively with the transmission and removal rates in the infectious process, which predict unimodal behavior, we propose an approach based on Contagion Mechanics that incorporates a dynamic law for the transmission rate . RESULTS: Using official data from the Department of

Frailty: Pathophysiology, Theoretical and Operational Definition(s), Impact, Prevalence, Management and Prevention, in an Increasingly Economically Developed and Ageing World.

The world's population is ageing, and most older adults experience a later life burdened with disease and disability. Frailty is a multidimensional and dynamic condition characterized by declines in reserve and function across multiple physiological systems, such that the ability to cope with every day or acute stressors becomes compromised. It is projected to become one of the most serious public health challenges economically developed societies will face in the coming century. This review provides a comprehensive overview of frailty, exploring its pathophysiology, theoretical and operationa

Elevated Mortality and Associated Social Determinants of Health in a Community-Based Sample of People Living with HIV in Ontario, Canada: Findings from the Positive Spaces, Healthy Places (PSHP) Study.

We examined social determinants of health associated with all-cause mortality among 602 people living with HIV/AIDS in Ontario, Canada. Mortality status was verified at 1-, 3-, and 5-year follow-up visits with information obtained from proxies (family members, partners, and friends), obituaries, and local AIDS memorial lists. Of the 454 people for whom mortality information was available, 53 individuals died yielding a crude mortality rate of 22.3 deaths per 1000 person-years, a rate substantially higher than the rate in the general population (6.8 per 1000 population).
