Sex-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of U.S. medical students.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the personal and clinical safe-sex-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices of U.S. medical students. METHODS: Sixteen medical schools were selected to survey the class of 2003 based on their characteristics similar to the national average. Students were surveyed at freshman orientation, at entrance to wards, and during their senior year. The primary personal outcome was the response to the question, "Are you currently trying to practice safe sex when sexually involved? (no, not applicable/no, not trying/yes, low priority/yes, high priority)." The primary professio

Impact of the CSM advice on thioridazine on general practitioner prescribing behaviour in Leeds: time series analysis.

In December 2000, the Committee for Safety of Medicines (CSM) advised that thioridazine may prolong QT intervals risking arrhythmias. We investigated the impact on general practitioner prescribing of thioridazine using a time series analysis. Numbers of items and costs of antipsychotics and benzodiazepines prescribed in Leeds from May 1999 until April 2002 were collated. Post-advice, thioridazine prescriptions dropped by 810 items per month (95% confidence interval = 420 to 1200, P < 0.001) but others increased slightly in response. Costs mimicked these changes. Fresh criteria are proposed for

Variables That Influence US Midwife and Physician Management of the Third Stage of Labor.

INTRODUCTION: Midwives and physicians incorporate their knowledge, experiences, and other variables in making clinical decisions. Variations in the management of the third stage of labor may be a result of variables that influence providers' decision making. The purpose of this study was to describe variables that influence US midwives' and physicians' management of the third stage of labor. METHODS: A randomly selected national sample of certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives, certified professional midwives, obstetricians, and family physicians was surveyed about the extent to whic

Impact of new guidelines for microbiological sampling on antibiotic prescribing patterns in general practice in the North Denmark Region: a retrospective pre-post observational study.

BACKGROUND: In April 2024, the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Aalborg University Hospital introduced new guidelines for general practitioners in the North Denmark Region, limiting microbiological culture and susceptibility testing of wound, skin, eye, ear, and throat infections to recurrent cases or treatment failure. While intended to reduce unnecessary testing and optimize resource use, the effect on antibiotic prescribing patterns remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To characterize and explore the development in requested microbiological cultures and susceptibility testing and antibiotic p

[The practice guideline 'Children with fever' (second revision) from the Dutch College of General Practitioners; a response from the perspective of general practice].

The new version of the practice guideline 'Children with fever' has recently been published by the Dutch College of General Practitioners. There is no evidence to support antipyretic therapy in children with fever. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is not advised for preventing seizures, but may be given to relieve other symptoms. Parents have a different attitude towards fever than do GPs. Parents are concerned about serious causes or complications of the fever. However, GPs are more interested in parameters other than fever. The practice guideline recommends that parents be advised and reassured,

Assessment of the awareness of rabies, rabies prophylaxis guidelines and rabies practice among physicians in Sudan: a national cross-sectional study, 2024.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a preventable viral zoonotic disease with a near 100% case fatality rate once clinical symptoms appear. In Sudan, rabies remains a significant public health concern, exacerbated by limited resources and the ongoing armed conflict. Physicians play a critical role in rabies prevention and management, yet their knowledge and adherence to updated clinical guidelines remain poorly understood. This study assesses physicians' knowledge, and awareness of rabies disease, adherence to updated rabies prophylaxis guidelines, and clinical practices in Sudan. METHODS: A cross-sectiona

Engagement between patients with obesity and osteoarthritis and primary care physicians: a cross-sectional survey.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Obesity is a major risk factor for development and worsening of osteoarthritis (OA). Managing obesity with effective weight loss strategies can improve patients' OA symptoms, functionality, and quality of life. However, little is known about the clinical journey of patients with both OA and obesity. This study aimed to map the medical journey of patients with OA and obesity by characterizing the roles of health care providers, influential factors, and how treatment decisions are made. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was completed with 304 patients diagnosed with OA

Clinical practices among healthcare professionals concerning neonatal jaundice and pale stools.

UNLABELLED: Jaundice and pale stools are major indicators of neonatal liver disease. Prognosis depends on timely diagnosis and management. We evaluated the clinical practices among healthcare professionals concerning jaundiced newborns and their ability to recognize pale stools. We supplied a questionnaire and a panel with eight photographs of stools, both locally validated, to physicians and nurses of the National Healthcare Service. Analysis was conducted according to professional status, specialization and years of experience of professionals and level of healthcare. Questionnaires were adm

Determinants of guideline-concordant breast cancer screening by family physicians for women aged 40-49 years: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although the current Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care guideline recommends that physicians should inform women aged 40-49 years of the potential benefits and harms of screening mammography to support individualized decisions, previous reports of variation in clinical practice at the physician level suggest a lack of guideline-concordant care. We explored determinants (barriers and facilitators) of guideline-concordant care by family physicians regarding screening mammography in this age group. METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews by phone with

Physician Perspective and Challenges Ordering/Interpreting Laboratory Tests Related to the Opioid Crisis in America.

The opioid crisis is a profound public health crisis in the United States. It has significantly increased morbidity and mortality in our nation. There are many contributing factors to the opioid crisis, including a strong national and international interest to treat pain as effectively as possible. To combat this crisis, numerous strategies have been implemented over the past few years at the legislative, health system, and patient levels. As a result of these efforts, for the first time since 1999, drug overdose deaths in the United States decreased from 2017 to 2018, when deaths involving al

Use of prehospital-induced hypothermia after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: a survey of the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians.

OBJECTIVE: Postresuscitation care of comatose survivors of cardiac arrest using induced hypothermia (IH) is recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) to improve neurological outcomes but has been performed primarily later in the course of care. Recently, it was shown that prehospital cooling is feasible, safe, and effective in lowering patient temperature. We sought to determine the prevalence of EMS agencies that use prehospital IH. We also sought to determine what perceived barriers to initiating IH might exist and th
