Patterns of preventive health services in rheumatoid arthritis patients compared to a primary care patient population.

To determine the proportion of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients receiving preventive health care according to US Preventive Services Task Force recommendations compared with a community-based population sample, with emphasis on dyslipidemia testing, given the increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in RA patients. Patients with RA (ICD-9 code 714.0 at ≥2 office visits with a rheumatologist) and a primary care physician (PCP) at the Geisinger Health System (GHS) were identified through electronic health records. The records were searched back from 3/31/08 for the length of time require

LH prevents AMH action via receptor downregulation in human primary granulosa lutein cells.

PURPOSE: Gonadotropins and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) regulate reproductive development and ovarian function. While AMH plays a well-established role in early folliculogenesis by counteracting gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone (LH) becomes more active later, during the antral phase, when granulosa and theca cells express their respective receptors. There are hints suggesting the existence of an interplay between these hormones regulating granulosa cell functions at late stages of the folliculogenesis., but the mechanisms remain unclear. In this context, we explored whether gonadotropin LH c

Duration of primary/secondary treatment to prevent recurrent venous thromboembolism: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Antithrombotic therapy can prevent recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is, however, associated with an increased risk for major bleeding. This meta-analysis systematically reviewed the evidence regarding the duration of antithrombotic therapy to assess benefits and harms. We systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared shorter (3-6 months) with longer (>6 months) courses of anticoagulation for the primary treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) or that compared discontinued with indefinite antithrombotic therapy for the second

The role of primary care physicians in preventing and managing dangerous games among adolescents: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Dangerous games are playful activities engaged in by children and adolescents, posing significant risks to their health. Various types exist, aggressive games, challenge games, and asphyxiation games, with the 'Choking game' (where individuals attempt strangulation) being the most well-known. The prevalence of dangerous games among adolescents is increasing, yet it remains a little-known and studied societal issue among healthcare professionals. OBJECTIVE: To assess physicians' role in the prevention and management of dangerous games. METHODS AND SETTINGS: Qualitative semi-struct

An urgent appeal to paediatric primary caregivers to help prevent severe iron deficiency anemia in toddlers.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common problem in toddlers. The cause of IDA is multifactorial but is often from excessive consumption of cow's milk. The prevalence and at times devastating consequences of IDA are under recognized. There are increasing numbers of toddlers presenting with severe IDA. We urge all paediatric primary care givers to help prevent severe IDA through adherence to the 2019 CPS Guidelines on iron requirements, early diagnosis, and adequate treatment.

Siblings reduce multiple sclerosis risk by preventing delayed primary Epstein-Barr virus infection.

Epstein-Barr virus infection, and perhaps almost exclusively delayed Epstein-Barr virus infection, seems to be a prerequisite for the development of multiple sclerosis. Siblings provide protection against infectious mononucleosis by occasionally preventing delayed primary Epstein-Barr virus infection, with its associated high risk of infectious mononucleosis. Each additional sibling provides further protection according to the age difference between the index child and the sibling. The closer the siblings are in age, the higher the protection, with younger siblings being more protective agains

Prescription Patterns for the Use of Antihypertensive Drugs for Primary Prevention Among Patients With Hypertension in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Several antihypertensive drugs are available for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, existing evidence on prescription patterns was primarily generated among patients at high CVD risk with short-term follow-up, and failed to capture impacts of time and patient characteristics. Our objective was therefore to describe longitudinal prescription patterns for antihypertensive drugs for the primary prevention of CVD among patients with arterial hypertension in the United Kingdom. METHODS: This population-based cohort study used data from the Clinical Practic…

SPTBN1 Prevents Primary Osteoporosis by Modulating Osteoblasts Proliferation and Differentiation and Blood Vessels Formation in Bone.

Osteoporosis is a common systemic skeletal disorder that leads to increased bone fragility and increased risk of fracture. Although βII-Spectrin (SPTBN1) has been reported to be involved in the development of various human cancers, the function and underlying molecular mechanisms of SPTBN1 in primary osteoporosis remain unclear. In this study, we first established a primary osteoporosis mouse model of senile osteoporosis and postmenopausal osteoporosis. The results showed that the expression of SPTBN1 was significantly downregulated in primary osteoporosis mice model compared with the control
