Patient specific 3D printed phantom for IMRT quality assurance.

The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of a patient specific phantom for patient specific dosimetric verification.Using the head and neck region of an anthropomorphic phantom as a substitute for an actual patient, a soft-tissue equivalent model was constructed with the use of a 3D printer. Calculated and measured dose in the anthropomorphic phantom and the 3D printed phantom was compared for a parallel-opposed head and neck field geometry to establish tissue equivalence. A nine-field IMRT plan was constructed and dose verification measurements were performed for the 3D printed p

Engineered PRINT(®) nanoparticles for controlled delivery of antigens and immunostimulants.

Particle replication in non-wetting templates (PRINT) is a novel nanoparticle platform that provides compositional flexibility with the ability to specify size and shape in formulating vaccines. The PRINT platform also offers manufacturing and cost advantages over traditional particle technologies. Across multiple antigen and adjuvant formulations, robust antibody and cellular responses have been achieved using PRINT particles in mouse models. Preclinical studies applying PRINT technology in the disease areas of influenza, malaria, and pneumonia are described in this commentary. The proof of p

The discovery of diabetic nephropathy: from small print to centre stage.

Until the early nineteenth century, diabetes mellitus was regarded as a disease of the kidney, in which there was an increase in the volume of urine and a wasting of the flesh. With the identification of glucose in blood and urine in the late eighteenth century, first it was re-framed as a disease of assimilation and only then became a metabolic disorder. Whilst these changing concepts were debated, it was noted in parallel that diabetics might show coagulable urine containing albumin, even before Bright and others had established this as a sign of kidney disease. Wilhelm Griesinger (1817-1868

Automatic activation of word phonology from print in deep dyslexia.

The performance of deep dyslexics in oral reading and other tasks suggests that they are poor at activating the phonology of words and non-words from printed stimuli. As the tasks ordinarily used to test deep dyslexics require controlled processing, it is possible that the phonology of printed words can be better activated on an automatic basis. This study investigated this possibility by testing a deep dyslexic patient on a lexical decision task with pairs of stimuli presented simultaneously. In Experiment 1, which used content words as stimuli, the deep dyslexic, like normal subjects, showed

Gelatin/peach gum composite-stabilized high internal phase emulsion gels for 3D printing and fucoxanthin delivery.

This study developed a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) gel stabilized by gelatin/peach gum (GL/PG) composite microgels for fucoxanthin (FX) delivery. GL/PG composites (4:1-1:4) were characterized for wettability, interfacial activity, and molecular interactions. FX-loaded HIPEs (0.5-4% w/v particles) were assessed for droplet size, microstructure, rheology, print fidelity, stability, and digestibility. The GL/PG3:1 composite showed balanced amphiphilicity (contact angle: ∼94.40°, interfacial tension: ∼24.05 mN/m). As the particle concentration increased from 0.5% to 3%, the HIPEs mean drop

Irreversible Bilayer Thermochromic Label Integrated With 3D Printing for Wide‑Range Temperature Monitoring in Food Logistics.

Temperature abuse during logistics is a major cause of quality deterioration in food, pharmaceuticals, and biological products. Therefore, the development of low-cost, irreversible, and tamper‑proof temperature indicators is of great practical significance. Based on the acid-catalyzed irreversible ring-opening coloration of crystal violet lactone (CVL) under acidic conditions, a bilayer temperature monitoring label was prepared in this study, and the label structure was further optimized by introducing three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. Upon temperature excursions, the acidic componen…

Heterogeneous Composite Design and 3D Printing Parameter Optimization of Al2O3 Ceramic Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Structures.

Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) Al2O3 ceramic structures hold significant potential for applications in biomedical engineering, catalytic systems, and thermal management technologies, which can be fabricated with high precision using vat photopolymerization-based digital light processing (DLP). However, conventional homogeneous designs for TPMS often do not fully meet advanced performance requirements, while the curing depth, a key parameter governing the dimensional accuracy and mechanical performance, has not been thoroughly investigated. To address these limitations, this study propo

Body-templated printing of a large-area and imperceptible organic sensing interface for skin motion recognition.

Skin motions provide rich information about our gestures, bodily status, and environmental interactions. However, large-area detection, sensing resolution, and imperceptibility have been a trilemma for current technologies to truthfully record skin motions. Here, we report a body-templated printing strategy to create a conformal sensing interface for large-area and subtle skin motion detection. Using a mild airflow to guide the deposition of an organic semiconducting ink, a sensing path is directly created to conform with skin topologies at the microscale and adapt with irregular human surface…

Combining 3D printing and elastographic characterization: A novel sphenoid wing meningioma simulation model for neurosurgical training.

High-fidelity simulation models are crucial for advancing neurosurgical training, particularly for complex skull base pathologies such as sphenoid wing meningiomas. This study introduces and validates a novel, cost-effective 3D-printed simulator specifically designed for sphenoid wing meningioma resection. A key innovation of this model is the integration of shear wave elastography (SWE) to enable objective biomechanical validation of tumor-mimicking materials. A patient-specific skull model was created using fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing and paired with custom-molded tumor repli…

Development of Antimicrobial Chitosan-Silver and Chitosan-Gold Nanocomposite Films by 3D Printing for Skin Application.

Silver (AgNP) and gold (AuNP) nanoparticles are notable in nanomedicine for their unique properties and strong antibacterial effects; however, formulating them into skin-applied systems that preserve bioactivity while controlling nanoparticle exposure remains challenging. Herein, semisolid extrusion 3D printing of chitosan nanocomposite hydrogels loaded with AgNPs or AuNPs was used to manufacture personalized topical films with antimicrobial performance and minimized skin penetration risk. AgNPs and AuNPs were synthesized with comparable nanoscale dimensions (11.83 ± 3.74 nm and 11.67 ± 1.96 n…

YOLO-AMI: enhancing online quality monitoring in 3D printing with composite loss and parameter-free attention.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is transforming industrial production; however, inevitable defects-such as spaghetti-like collapses, surface blemishes ("zits"), and stringing-substantially degrade product quality and mechanical performance. To overcome limitations of traditional inspection methods-often inefficient, subjective, or reliant on costly offline equipment-a high-precision, real-time defect-detection model, YOLO-AMI, is proposed, based on the YOLOv10 architecture. The neck network was reconstructed using the Asymptotic Feature Pyramid Network to enhance multi-scale feature fusion and sup

Strain rate sensitivity of PEEK high performance biopolymer in ΜΕΧ 3D printing: Compressive thermomechanical fracture mechanisms.

In structural and biomedical applications, where high-speed loading is a major concern for mechanical reliability, high-performance polymers (HPP) are increasingly required. Still, their thermomechanical response produced by additive manufacturing methods has not been fully characterized. In this study, the strain-rate-dependent compressive behavior of specimens, 3D printed by the material extrusion (MEX) method with the polyether ether ketone (PEEK) biopolymer, has been investigated. Simultaneously, the evolution of specimen temperature has been monitored using an infrared camera. Compression
