Transcatheter closure has been widely accepted as a highly effective way to treat abnormal blood flows and/or embolization of thrombus in the heart. It allows the closure of four types of congenital heart defects (CHDs) and stroke-associated left atrial appendage (LAA). The four types of CHDs include atrial septal defect (ASD), patent foramen ovale (PFO), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and ventricular septal defect (VSD). Advancements in the materials and configurations of occlusion devices have spurred the transition from open-heart surgery with high complexity and morbidity, or lifelong med

Artificial small-diameter blood vessels (SDBVs) are extremely limited in their thrombosis and still present significant clinical challenges worldwide. In recent years, 3D-bio-printing has offered a powerful technique to fabricate vessel channels in tissue engineering applications. Hydrogels are attractive bio-inks for SDBVs 3D-bio-printing, but they usually present weak mechanical properties. To overcome the weak mechanical properties of hydrogel bio-inks, a printable human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC)-laden polyrotaxane-alginate (PR-Alg) double-network (DN) hydrogel was fabricated.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has become a promising manufacturing technique for pharmaceutical products. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is the most affordable printing technology. But this technique has two major drawbacks: limited drug-loading capacity and the stability of thermolabile drugs. So, other techniques such as melt casting could be associated with FDM to overcome these limitations. In the melt casting method, the drug is mixed with a molten polymer and is poured in the mold and allowed to solidify. The present study for the first time describes the preparation of a multi-compar

For an early intervention with children, a prosthetic hand that is affordable, light-weight, and easy to wear and use is vital. Commercial prosthetic hands for children are often too expensive, burdensome and difficult to use. In this research, we attempt to address these issues with a novel design for a prosthetic hand for children. The proposed prosthesis implements two important features: the use of sound biofeedback and a soft socket with in-liner electrodes. We hypothesize that these features will make the hand prosthesis easy to use, lightweight and affordable, improving the control perf

The dawn of 3D printing in medicine has given the field the hope of vitality in many patients fighting a multitude of diseases. Also entitled bioprinting, this appertains to its sequential printing of precursor ink, embodying cells and polymer/composite in a predetermined trajectory. The precursor ink, in addition to cells, is predominantly constituted of hydrogels due to its biodegradability and ability to mimic the body's anatomy and mechanical features, e.g. bones, etc. This review paper is devoted to explicating the bioprinting (3D/4D) of alginate hydrogels, which are extracts from brown a

Craniomaxillofacial congenital anomalies comprise approximately one third of all congenital birth defects and include deformities such as alveolar clefts, craniosynostosis, and microtia. Current surgical treatments commonly require the use of autogenous graft material which are difficult to shape, limited in supply, associated with donor site morbidity and cannot grow with a maturing skeleton. Our group has demonstrated that 3D printed bio-ceramic scaffolds can generate vascularized bone within large, critical-sized defects (defects too large to heal spontaneously) of the craniomaxillofacial s

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is capable of transforming intricate digital models into tangible objects, allowing geoscientists to replicate the geometry of 3D pore networks of sedimentary rocks. We provide a refined method for building scalable pore-network models ("proxies") using stereolithography 3D printing that can be used in repeated flow experiments (e.g., core flooding, permeametry, porosimetry). Typically, this workflow involves two steps, model design and 3D printing. In this study, we explore how the addition of post-processing and validation can reduce uncertainty in the 3D-prin

The increasing adoption of three-dimensional (3D) food printing has increased the demand for compatible printable materials. This study was to investigate the regulation of pandan leaf powder (PLP) on corn starch (CS) hydrogels for 3D printing. Results indicated that PLP significantly increased the peak viscosity from 6911.00 to 8773.67 cP. Moreover, the increased hardness and storage modulus (G') revealed that PLP promoted the formation of a denser, more ordered three-dimensional network. Mechanistically, PLP can be bound to CS through non-covalent interactions, especially intermolecular hydr

Musculoskeletal tumour imaging utilises a multimodality approach to obtain valuable diagnostic information about the bone tumour and plan appropriate management strategies for their resection. Conventional radiography has been the workhorse for bone tumours evaluation. However, with rapid evolution and advancements in cross-sectional imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, and PET CT, additional insights on tumour imaging have been made possible, for accurate staging and optimal surgical planning. Recent innovations in image fusion further enhance the precision of tumoral assessment. Additionally,

CASE: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) predisposes patients to fractures and nonunion due to poor bone quality and deformity. We report successful management of femoral shaft nonunion using patient-specific 3-dimensional (3D) planning in a patient with OI. A 30-year-old woman with type 3 OI presented with an atraumatic femoral fracture progressing to nonunion. There was a severe deformity with narrow canal that complicated fixation. Preoperative 3D modelling guided corrective osteotomy and intramedullary fixation. She achieved pain resolution, functional recovery, and radiographic union at 12 mont

We conducted this study to investigate the effects of additional education using 3D visualization (3DV) and 3D printing (3DP) after applying 2D images for anatomical education in normal pediatric structures and congenital anomalies. For the production of 3DV and 3DP of the anatomical structures, computed tomography (CT) images of the four topics (the normal upper/lower abdomen, choledochal cyst, and imperforate anus) were used. Anatomical self-education and tests were administered to a total of 15 third-year medical students with these modules. Following the tests, surveys were conducted in or

The prosthetic reconstruction of unilateral ear deformity is a straightforward procedure which relies on copying the details, position, and symmetry of the existing contralateral ear. However, reconstructing bilaterally missing ears is challenging. The use of 3-dimensional (3D) technology in the prosthetic reconstruction of the bilaterally missing ears of 6 patients is described. The deformity site was created directly by segmenting the patient's digital scan or indirectly via a desktop scanner. Adequate bone quantity and quality for implant retention and optimal implant locations were also id

Computer-aided design and additive manufacturing are revolutionizing oral and maxillofacial surgery. Current methods use virtual surgical planning sessions and custom plate milling via third-party vendors, which is costly and time-consuming, negating the effectiveness in acute facial trauma. This technical note describes a state-of-the-art in-house expedited digital workflow for computer-aided virtual fracture reduction, 3-dimensional printing, and preoperative reconstruction plate adaptation for the management of an acute mandible fracture. This process uses the computed tomographic scan a pa
