Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Feeding Problems and Their Associations with Dietary Interventions, Food Supplement Use, and Behavioral Characteristics in a Sample of Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by impairments in social interaction, communication, and restricted, stereotyped behavior. Gastrointestinal (GI), nutritional, and feeding problems are often reported in ASD. We investigated the prevalence of GI symptoms, food selectivity, and mealtime difficulties, and their associations with dietary interventions, food supplement use, and behavioral characteristics in a sample involving 247 participants with ASD and 267 controls aged 2-18 years. Data were collected by a questionnaire. GI symptoms were observed in 88.9% of children and adolesc

Association between adolescent rough-and-tumble play and conduct problems, substance use, and risk-taking behaviors: Findings from a school-based sample.

Rough-and-tumble play (RTP), also known as play fighting, is a common form of play frequently reported and studied by researchers. However, one important limitation of past research in the area of RTP has been the neglect of the adolescence period. Consequently, little is known about the function of adolescent RTP as well as about clinical characteristics of youth who engage in this activity after childhood. In a school-based sample of 1,771 middle school students (ages 9-16 years), the current study sought to address this gap by examining, via bivariate and multivariate logistic regression an

Assessment of adolescent mental health and behavioral problems in institutional care: discrepancies between staff-reported CBCL scores and adolescent-reported YSR scores.

For children residing in institutional settings, staff act as primary caregivers and often provide assessment of child psychopathology. Minimal research exists on how and when staff-caregivers are best positioned to report on youth mental health. This study examines differences between 60 staff-reported and 60 adolescent-reported Child Behavioral Checklist/Youth Self-Report (CBCL/YSR) scores in Jordanian care centers, and the associations between adolescent-staff agreement, demographic characteristics and child-caregiver relationship factors. Results indicated small to modest correlations betw

Functional Analysis Outcomes and Comparison of Direct Observations and Informant Rating Scales in the Assessment of Severe Behavior Problems of Infants and Toddlers At-Risk for Developmental Delays.

Severe problem behaviors, like aggression, self-injury, and repetitive behaviors, in people with intellectual and developmental disabilities often appear during early development and may persist without early intervention. The frequencies of self-injurious behavior, aggression, tantrums, property destruction and stereotyped behavior among 17 infants and toddlers at risk for developmental delays and severe behavior problems were assessed using two methods: 1) direct observation of responses during 10 s partial interval recording during analogue functional analysis and 2) the Behavior Problem In…

Children's callous-unemotional traits moderate links between their positive relationships with parents at preschool age and externalizing behavior problems at early school age.

BACKGROUND: Growing research on children's traits as moderators of links between parenting and developmental outcomes has shown that variations in positivity, warmth, or responsiveness in parent-child relationships are particularly consequential for temperamentally difficult or biologically vulnerable children. But very few studies have addressed the moderating role of children's callous-unemotional (CU) traits, a known serious risk factor for antisocial cascades. We examined children's CU traits as moderators of links between parent-child Mutually Responsive Orientation (MRO) and shared posit

Emergent literacy skills, behavior problems and familial antecedents of reading difficulties: a follow-up study of reading achievement from kindergarten to fifth grade.

This study examined the relation between emergent literacy skills, teachers' reports of behavioral problems, and word reading achievement in a community sample of French students. Family background was investigated and included familial antecedents of reading difficulties (Fa/Rd) and parents' educational level. The analyses explored the pattern of concurrent relations between behavioral, familial and emergent literacy measures in a sample of 812 preschoolers, and their predictive power in explaining word reading achievement in a sub-sample of 150 children followed from kindergarten to fifth gr

Prenatal and postnatal tobacco exposure and behavioral problems in 10-year-old children: results from the GINI-plus prospective birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal and postnatal tobacco exposure have been reported to be associated with behavioral problems. However, the magnitude of the association with tobacco exposure at specific periods of exposure is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the relative risk of behavioral problems in children who had been exposed to tobacco smoke in utero and postnatally. METHODS: We analyzed data from a prospective birth cohort study in two cities in Germany: the German Infant Nutrition Intervention. Our sample included 5,991 children born between 1995 and 1998 as well as their parents. We measured beha

Do parenting and the home environment, maternal depression, neighborhood, and chronic poverty affect child behavioral problems differently in different racial-ethnic groups?

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the processes through which parenting practices, maternal depression, neighborhood, and chronic poverty affect child behavioral problems are similar or different in minority and nonminority children in the United States. METHODS: Data from 884 white, 538 black, and 404 Latino families with children who were 6 to 9 years of age in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth were analyzed. The outcome, child behavioral problems, was measured using the Behavior Problems Index externalizing and internalizing subscales. The effects of chronic poverty, neighborhood, ma

Self-reported impulsivity, task-based inhibitory control, and early sipping behaviors as longitudinal predictors of adolescent alcohol use and problems in the ABCD Study.

BACKGROUND: Early low-level alcohol use predicts subsequent alcohol use and problems. Impulsivity and poor inhibitory control also predict later problematic alcohol use. However, few studies prospectively examine early sipping in combination with modeling impulsivity and inhibitory control change over time as predictors of adolescent alcohol use. METHODS: Data Release 6.0 from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study was used (n=11,866; 48% Female). A series of linear mixed-effect models examined trajectories of non-religious sipping at baseline (ages 9-10) and self-reported im

Emotional and Behavioral Problems Among Siblings of Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in a Tertiary Child Psychiatry Setting in Bangladesh: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Siblings of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may experience emotional and behavioral difficulties. Shared genetic and environmental factors, family stress, caregiving demands, and potentially unequal parental attention may contribute to these difficulties. However, the mental health needs of these siblings may be overlooked. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study included 95 siblings aged 4-17 years of children with ADHD attending the Department of Psychiatry, BSMMU. Sociodemographic information was collected using a semi-structured questionna

Maternal mobile phone use during pregnancy versus early childhood in relation to behavioral problems in preschool-aged children: A prospective cohort study.

Evidence on the effect of maternal mobile phone use on child behavioral development remains inconsistent, particularly regarding the relative importance of the prenatal and early childhood exposure periods. We aimed to examine associations between maternal mobile phone call duration during pregnancy and early childhood and behavioral problems in preschool-aged children. We analyzed data from the Mothers and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) prospective birth cohort. Maternal mobile phone use was measured by questionnaire during pregnancy and at ages 3-5 years, and child behavioral proble

How does family functioning contribute to child externalizing and internalizing behavior problems after childhood TBI? Evidence from a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite a well-documented association between childhood traumatic brain injury and elevated risk for internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, the mechanisms through which family functioning contributes to individual variation in these behavioral outcomes remains poorly understood. This prospective cohort study aimed to assess the respective contribution of family functioning and child emotion regulation (ER) to post-injury behavior problems at 1-year follow-up, with a specific focus on evaluating the role of ER problems in mediating the effects of familial

Child behavior problems and parental psychological distress in Chinese families of children with autism: The putative moderating role of parental social support and cultural values.

The wellbeing of parents of children with autism residing in mainland China remains understudied. We aimed to examine whether and how parental perceived social support, individualism, and collectivism acted together to moderate the relationships between child behavior problems and parental psychological distress in Chinese parents of children with autism. With convenience and snowball sampling, data on 268 primary caregiver parents of children with autism were collected from an online cross-sectional survey. Linear regression analysis indicated that child behavior problems were significantly a

Compulsive sexual behavior, sexual functioning problems, and their linkages to substance use among German medical students: exploring the role of sex and trauma exposure.

Sexual problems relevant to psychotherapy, such as compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) and sexual functioning problems (SFP), have been related to harmful substance use in several studies. Substance use is prevalent among medical students (MS) and is often considered a maladaptive coping strategy for stress, as well as a risk factor for mental health issues. Sexual problems and substance use share trauma exposure and post-traumatic symptoms as risk factors for their development. This study aimed to explore the interaction effects between problematic sexual behaviors, substance use, and trauma amo

Likelihood of identifying autistic traits with the autism spectrum quotient (AQ) in male juveniles with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and severe behavioral problems (SBPs).

BACKGROUND: When screening for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) is generally considered to be useful. Whether the AQ is also a suitable screener for ASD in juveniles with severe behavioral problems (SBPs) is unknown. Due to the overlap of symptoms between ASD and SBPs, particularly in juveniles low on empathy, the screening capacity of the AQ might be constrained. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether (comorbid) SBPs affect the screening capacity of the AQ. The hypothesis is that male juveniles with SBPs - but without a diagnosis of ASD - wil

Emotional and behavioral problems change the development of cerebellar gray matter volume, thickness, and surface area from childhood to adolescence: A longitudinal cohort study.

AIMS: Increasing evidence indicates that major neurodevelopmental disorders have potential links to abnormal cerebellar development. However, the developmental trajectories of cerebellar subregions from childhood to adolescence are lacking, and it is not clear how emotional and behavioral problems affect them. We aim to map the developmental trajectories of gray matter volume (GMV), cortical thickness (CT), and surface area (SA) in cerebellar subregions from childhood to adolescence and examine how emotional and behavioral problems change the cerebellar development trajectory in a longitudinal
