Muscle Spindle Model-Based Non-Invasive Electrical Stimulation for Motion Perception Feedback in Prosthetic Hands.

Prosthetic hands offer significant benefits for patients with hand amputations by partially replicating the function of real hands. However, most current prosthetics lack sensory feedback on movement, leading to a gap in proprioception for users. To bridge this gap and approximate the natural experience of hand use, prosthetic hands must offer detailed motion feedback. This paper introduces a non-invasive electrical stimulation approach, which can provide motion perception feedback through modeling muscle spindles. By employing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), the method gen…

Vestibular patients examined by posturography: sensory interaction testing.

Posturography (PG) examines the influence of vestibular disturbance on standing balance via the vestibulospinal reflex. Testing under several conditions, in which the sensory input by vision and proprioception is impeded from contributing in a normal way, evaluates the "sensory interaction." In a number of patients with known peripheral vestibular disorders, PG showed normal results, which indicate that, for these patients, the possible influence of the vestibular dysfunction has been cancelled at the central level (compensation). In the others, influence was seen in several degrees. The senso…

The effect of long-term specialized motor experience of the lower limbs on the moving rubber foot illusion.

Past research revealed that specialized long-term motor experience in the upper limbs can result in individuals experiencing variants of the rubber hand illusion less vividly than those without such motor experience. However, it remained unclear whether specialized long-term motor experience had an impact on the experience of body ownership illusions involving the lower extremities. Therefore, a moving rubber foot illusion (mRFI) task (real and rubber feet moved identically for 90s), in addition to control conditions, were conducted with two groups of young adult females, one consisting of 24

Enhancing postural stability in knee osteoarthritis patients through targeted training: a randomized control trial using the WOMAC assessment tool.

PURPOSE: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common joint condition in older adults that causes pain, disability, and reduced quality of life. Although there is no known cure for KOA, exercise therapy is strongly recommended as a primary non-drug treatment. This study aimed to assess the effect of combining proprioceptive training with physical therapy on pain, balance, and osteoarthritis symptom severity in patients with KOA. METHODS: A total of 34 patients with primary KOA (aged 50-65) were assigned to either intervention or control groups (n = 17 each). The intervention group received conventio

Relationship between Car-Sickness Susceptibility and Postural Activity: Could the Re-Weighting Strategy between Signals from Different Body Sensors Be an Underlying Factor?

Postural control characteristics have been proposed as a predictor of Motion Sickness (MS). However, postural adaptation to sensory environm … s. Results showed no difference between MS and non-MS participants following loss of relevant ankle proprioception. However, the reintroduction of reliable ankle signals led, for the non-MS participants, to an increase of the ER originating from a previously up-weighted vestibular information during the sway-referenced situation. This suggests inter-individual d …

Proprioceptors-enriched neuronal cultures from induced pluripotent stem cells from Friedreich ataxia patients show altered transcriptomic and proteomic profiles, abnormal neurite extension, and impaired electrophysiological properties.

Friedreich ataxia is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder with prominent neurological manifestations and cardiac involvement. The disease is caused by large GAA expansions in the first intron of the FXN gene, encoding the mitochondrial protein frataxin, resulting in downregulation of gene expression and reduced synthesis of frataxin. The selective loss of proprioceptive neurons is a hallmark of Friedreich ataxia, but the cause of the specific vulnerability of these cells is still unknown. We herein perform an in vitro characterization of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived senso

Sensory feedback-dependent coding of arm position in local field potentials of the posterior parietal cortex.

Although multisensory integration is crucial for sensorimotor function, it is unclear how visual and proprioceptive sensory cues are combined in the brain during motor behaviors. Here we characterized the effects of multisensory interactions on local field potential (LFP) activity obtained from the superior parietal lobule (SPL) as non-human primates performed a reaching task with either unimodal (proprioceptive) or bimodal (visual-proprioceptive) sensory feedback. Based on previous analyses of spiking activity, we hypothesized that evoked LFP responses would be tuned to arm location but would

Preservation of VGLUT1 synapses on ventral calbindin-immunoreactive interneurons and normal locomotor function in a mouse model of spinal muscular atrophy.

Dysfunction in sensorimotor synapses is one of the earliest pathological changes observed in a mouse model [spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)Δ7] of spinal muscular atrophy. Here, we examined the density of proprioceptive and cholinergic synapses on calbindin-immunoreactive interneurons ventral to the lateral motor column. This population includes inhibitory Renshaw interneurons that are known to receive synaptic input from muscle spindle afferents and from motoneurons. At postnatal day (P)13, near the end stage of the disease, the somatic area of calbindin(+) neurons in the L1/L2 and L5/L6 segment

Mechanoreceptor Stretching in the Superior Tarsal Muscle Triggering Limb and Craniocervical Dystonia: A Report of Two Cases.

Voluntary upper eyelid opening stretches mechanoreceptors in the superior tarsal muscle (STM), serving as an analog to a serial muscle spindle, inducing reflex contractions of slow-twitch fibers in the levator palpebrae superioris and facial expression muscles via the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus and rostral locus coeruleus (LC). Because the LC projects widely to the brainstem and spinal cord, we hypothesized that excessive STM mechanoreceptor stretching could induce dystonic contractions across broader muscle groups. This observational case report describes two unique patients presenting
