The prospective effect of purpose in life on gambling disorder and psychological flourishing among university students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder (GD) is a mental disorder with a relatively higher prevalence in university students compared to adolescents and adults. Its reciprocity with mental being indicators, such as psychological flourishing, would be expected, but prior to this study had not yet been empirically examined. In addition, the predictive value of purpose in life (PIL) on university students' GD and psychological flourishing also remained unknown. This 1-year longitudinal study was the first to test the potential bidirectional relationships among PIL, self-reported GD symptoms, and p

Reciprocal associations between PTSD symptoms and functioning over time among veteran men and women.

Psychological distress and functional impairment are key diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, most studies focus on PTSD symptom distress with minimal attention on functioning. The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal dynamics of PTSD symptom severity and global functional impairment, as well as specific areas of functioning (e.g., family, work, parenting, self-care). A gender-balanced sample of 1,461 returning veteran men and women completed measures of PTSD symptom severity and functional impairment at five timepoints between 2010 and 2019. Late

Psychosocial resources and associations between childhood physical abuse and adult well-being.

Childhood physical abuse is often associated with detrimental physical and psychological consequences in adulthood. Yet, some adults appear to overcome effects of very severe parental physical abuse in childhood. This study considered whether psychosocial resources (i.e., emotional and instrumental support, personal control) explain variability in well-being for adults who experienced childhood physical abuse by their parents. Participants included 2,711 adults aged 25-74 years from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS I) study. Moderation models revealed that high levels of personal contro

The sample consisted of 244 individuals (age 24) in a longitudinal study who had experienced MDD by 19. Maternal MDD was associated with MDD recurrence, chronicity and severity, anxiety disorders, and (among sons only) lower psychosocial functioning in offspring between the ages of 19 and 24. Paternal MDD was associated with lower functioning. Sons of depressed fathers had elevated suicidal ideation…

Combining novel trait and neurocognitive frameworks to parse heterogeneity in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) diagnosis comprises several constellations of trait, neurocognitive, and psychosocial alterations. Dimensional models of psychopathology provide new opportunities to parse heterogeneity and create a stronger interface between individual characterization and psychosocial outcomes. However, dimensional models have focused on either traits or neurocognitive features, lacking integration to capture the multifaceted nature of BPD. METHOD: We assessed 100 participants with BPD using a combination of tools stemming from trait (Alternative Model for Pe
