Eleven girls with idiopathic precocious puberty had height predictions determined at various ages prior to obtaining mature heights. The Bayley-Pinneau method of height prediction produced both overestimation and underestimation. Height predictions were more accurate at chronologic ages approaching mature heights.

A 7 1/2 year-old boy developed pseudoprecocious puberty. The diagnosis of Leydig cell tumour was suggested by clinical and hormonal findings and greatly facilitated by ultrasonographic investigation of the testes. Surgical exploration was in keeping with the diagnosis and the tumour was removed. Orchidectomy was not necessary. It appears that ultrasonography may be very useful in diagnosing a testicular tumour. It facilitates surgical intervention since it permits localization of the lesion which is usually very small and limited to a small part of the testis, as in this case.

16 girls with precocious puberty have been studied. Following low dosage cyproterone acetate (CA) therapy (mean daily dosage 65 mg/m2BSA) a beneficial effect on growth and skeletal maturation was observed. During high dosage therapy (150 mg/m2 per day) endocrinological studies were performed in 10 of these patients. The tumour aetiology of precocious puberty is sometimes clinically evident when accompanied by visual disturbances or by raised intracranial pressure. A synthetic steroid compound derived from testosteron (isoxazol-ethisterone), Danazol, with gonadotropin-depressing activity, was used in the treatment of 4 cases of idiopathis sexual precocity (age 2 1/2 to 4 years) and in 10 cases of severe pubertal gynaecomastia. A female case of precocious puberty associated with HCG-producing ectopic pinealoma was reported. The patient, a 5-year-old girl, was referred to the hospital because of headache and choked discs. Pubertal onset is characterized by reactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis resulting in pulsatile gonadotropin secretion and subsequent sex steroid production. Accurate measurements of the gonadotropins and sex steroids are essential to ensure timely diagnosis of precocious puberty, so as to determine optimal management. This review summarizes the available laboratory testing for the diagnosis of puberty, discussing the different assays used while reviewing the limitations of such testing.
