WHO framework convention on tobacco control and its implementation in South-East Asia region.

The birth of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) took place in response to the global tobacco epidemic and it became the most important global tobacco control instrument. Duly recognizing tobacco use as an important public health problem and in the wake of rising prevalence of and mortality related to tobacco use, almost all Member States of the South-East Asia Region signed and ratified the WHO FCTC. Following the ratification, Member countries have enacted comprehensive national tobacco control laws and regulations. Most countries have covered some important provisions

Triple Burden of Malnutrition among Children in India: Current Scenario and the Way Forward.

The triple burden of malnutrition (undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiency) or TBM among under-five (U5) children is an increasingly recognised public health challenge. A literature search was conducted to identify studies published from 1976 to 2022, which had focused on information regarding different factors of child malnutrition. The findings were analysed and contextualised from policy and programmatic perspective. There is a high burden of various forms of malnutrition in India. Insufficient dietary intake and illnesses are immediate and most common causes of triple bu

Barriers to postpartum depression treatment among Indigenous Bedouin women in Israel: A focus group study.

Postpartum depression (PPD), a common mental health problem among mothers worldwide, is higher among minority women. However, little is known about barriers faced by minority women when accessing mental health care services (MHCS) for PPD treatment. Drawing on McLeroy et al (Health Education Quartely 15: 351, 1988) ecological model, the current study explores barriers to mental health services among pregnant and postpartum minority Bedouin women in southern Israel. We conducted eight focus groups (FGs) in Arabic with 75 Bedouin women recruited using snowball sampling. Participants completed a

Helminthiases in the People's Republic of China: Status and prospects.

Helminth infections, many of them listed as neglected tropical diseases by the World Health Organization, remain a public health issue in many parts of the world. The People's Republic of China (P.R. China) stands out due to impressive progress in the control and local elimination of helminth infections. An important contextual factor is P.R. China's sustained social and economic development that allowed implementation of health-related poverty alleviation, improving water, sanitation and hygiene, enhancing information, education and communication, coupled with major engineering and infrastruc

Uses of private health provider data for governance in low-income and middle-income countries: results from a scoping review.

UNLABELLED: This work grew from an interest in understanding how private data are used for health system governance in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). OBJECTIVE: We conducted a scoping review to understand how the public sector collects routine data from the private health sector and uses it for governance purposes. The private health sector was defined to include both formal and informal, for-profit or non-profit, actors delivering healthcare services. FINDINGS: We identified 4014 individual English language studies published between 2010 and 2021. We reviewed titles and abs

The Role of Public-Private Partnerships to Increase Access to Contraception in an Emergency Response Setting: The Zika Contraception Access Network Program.

The Zika Contraception Access Network (Z-CAN) program was a short-term emergency response intervention that used contraception to prevent unintended pregnancies to reduce Zika-related adverse birth outcomes during the 2016-2017 Zika virus outbreak in Puerto Rico. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that a collaborative and coordinated response was needed from governments and private-sector partners to improve access to contraception during the Zika outbreak in Puerto Rico. In response, the National Foundation for the CDC, with technical assistance from CDC, establishe

Scoping review of brucellosis in Cameroon: Where do we stand, and where are we going?

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease known to be endemic to parts of western and sub-Saharan Africa. However, the epidemiology for humans and animals remains largely unknown in many of these countries with Cameroon being a typical example. Despite common knowledge that brucellosis affects livestock, the actual number of infected animals remains unknown. Through a scoping review, the current known status of the disease is described. The aim is to ascertain relevant and publicly accessible research and knowledge of human and animal brucellosis in the country, and to provide an overview of the facto

Colorectal Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Sub-Saharan Africa: Diagnostic Challenges and Systemic Care Constraints.

BackgroundColorectal inflammatory bowel disease (cIBD) encompasses the colitides-ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's colitis (CC)-and is defined by chronic, relapsing inflammation of the colon and rectum. Indeterminate colitis (IC) is diagnosed when available clinical and diagnostic features do not allow clear classification as UC or CC. cIBD is increasingly recognized as a global disease; however, in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), it is often misdiagnosed within an infectious-disease-dominant clinical environment, under conditions of constrained diagnostic infrastructure and unmet management needs

Prevalence and determinants of child immunization coverage in Ethiopia: Evidence from the 2019 mini-demographic and health survey.

Immunization is a crucial public health intervention, and in Ethiopia, a nation characterized by diversity, immunization coverage shows considerable variations. This study aims to assess immunization coverage across various vaccines in Ethiopia and understand the prevalence and factors affecting immunization rates. This study utilized secondary data from the 2019 Ethiopian Mini Demographic and Health Survey (EMDHS), a community-based cross-sectional study. A Poisson regression model was used to evaluate the children's immunization coverage: the number of vaccinations a child received across 18

The United States is in its third decade of a drug overdose crisis. An important tool for responding to this crisis is the opioid overdose r … ed and terrible problem, but sustainable overdose prevention requires comprehensive improvements to public health infrastructure. The overdose crisis requires attention, effort, and funding more than it needs a novel technological or pharmaceutical intervention.

Influenza Immunization in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Preparing for Next-Generation Influenza Vaccines.

Influenza vaccines have a long history of safety and demonstrated efficacy; however, they are seldom used in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although reasons for underuse are multifactorial and differ from country to country, the need for up to twice-annual reformulation and yearly vaccination are obstacles to influenza prevention in LMICs. Major efforts are underway to produce next-generation influenza vaccines that provide durable protection against drifted strains, and such vaccines could address these unmet needs. However, additional information is required to influence immunizat

Cultural Authority and Food Choices: How Intergenerational Power Shapes Maternal Diet in Rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Maternal malnutrition remains a persistent public health challenge in South Africa, affecting both maternal and child health outcomes. Dietary practices during pregnancy and lactation are shaped by complex social dynamics that extend beyond individual choice. OBJECTIVES: This study explored maternal dietary practices during pregnancy, defined as the foods women reported consuming, avoiding, substituting, or concealing, and examined how cultural norms and intergenerational power relations influenced these practices within the context of routine antenatal nutrition counseling. Climate change and water-related diseases: a bibliometric, knowledge map, topic modeling, and content analysis.

This study employs a multi-method approach - bibliometric analysis, knowledge mapping, BERTopic modeling, and content analysis - to map the evolving research landscape on climate change and water-related diseases (WRDs) from 1995 to 2025. Our analysis reveals a marked increase in publications post-2007, peaking in 2024, yet this growth is characterized by significant geographic concentration. The United States, China, and the United Kingdom dominate scholarly output, while a centralized collaboration network sidelines many high-risk regions, creating a critical evidence gap. What enabled the successful implementation of a quality certification initiative in Bhavnagar, Gujarat? A policy analysis case study.

High-quality health systems are key to improving population health outcomes globally. In India, the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) is a certification policy adopted by the government to improve the quality of care in public health facilities. This policy aims to assess public health facilities through a set of comprehensive, pre-defined standards derived from global best practices. However, only a small number of districts in the country have been able to effectively complete certifications as mandated. Bhavnagar, a district in the state of Gujarat in western India, is a positive
