Preventing sudden infant deaths--the slow diffusion of an idea.

The sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is among the leading causes of post-neonatal mortality in industrialised countries. Research has highlighted that many of these deaths are avoidable by adopting a few simple precautions. These include sleeping in the supine position, avoiding exposure to tobacco smoke, breast feeding where possible, and avoiding over heating. The paper traces the development of understanding of the role of sleeping position in the aetiology of SIDS and the diffusion of this knowledge among and within industrialised countries. In retrospect, evidence began to become avail

How Do Professional Nurses Practice Happiness in the Unstable Work Environment? Qualitative Inquiry.

This study explores how professional nurses practice happiness in the unstable environment of Uganda's public hospitals. The study adopted an exploratory qualitative methodology using data collected through an open-ended instrument. Utilizing the qualitative data analysis software QSR NVivo 9, the data were analyzed following Gioia's methodology. Verbatim text was used to explain the emergent themes. The study findings show that to successfully perform happiness practices, public hospital managers in Uganda engage, set positive goals, and put in place meaningful duties. The practices undertake

The evolution of postmortem investigation: a historical perspective on autopsy's decline and imaging's role in its revival.

Autopsy is generally regarded as the gold standard for cause of death determination, the most accurate contributor to mortality data. Despite this, autopsy rates have substantially declined, and death certificates are more frequently completed by clinicians. Substantial discrepancies between clinician-presumed and autopsy-determined cause of death impact quality control in hospitals, accuracy of mortality data, and, subsequently, the applicability and effectiveness of public health efforts. This problem is compounded by wavering support for the practice of autopsy by accrediting bodies and aca

Primary care health issues among men who have sex with men.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the article is to examine "appropriate" health care for men who have sex with men (MSM), which is not to suggest "special" health care. As a group, MSM are at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections, anal cancer, and mental health disorders. Focus areas in this article will address health issues that the primary care nurse practitioner (NP) may encounter in clinical practice: anal carcinoma, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), high-risk sexual practices, depression, and substance abuse were topics chosen for inclusion in this article. These topics were amon

A 'health broker' role as a catalyst of change to promote health: an experiment in deprived Dutch neighbourhoods.

Urban social entrepreneurs have been suggested to play an essential part in the success of local health promotion initiatives. Up to now, roles like these have only been identified in retrospect. This prospective collaborative study explored the possibilities of institutionalizing a comparable role for a 'health broker' in four Dutch municipalities as an additional investment to promote health in deprived neighbourhoods. The theoretical notions of public and policy entrepreneurs as well as of boundary spanners were adopted as a reference framework. Documents produced by the collaborative proje

Cultural Persistence of Tahnik Practice (Use of Honey) Despite Infant Botulism Risk: A Community-Based Study in Pakistan.

PURPOSE: Infant botulism is an uncommon but serious condition arising from honey containing spores of Clostridium botulinum. Despite this well-understood risk, practices like tahnik, where honey or dates are fed to newborns, continue as customs in many cultures. Understanding these traditions is important for informing global public health strategies. This study aimed to determine maternal awareness about infant botulism, investigate the prevalence of tahnik, and recognize factors affecting its practice in a Muslim community. DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional survey. METHODS: A total of 41

Narrative review of the barriers and facilitators to chlamydia testing in general practice.

As the cornerstone of Australian primary health care, general practice is a setting well suited for regular chlamydia testing but testing rates remain low. This review examines the barriers and facilitators to chlamydia testing in general practice. Six databases--Medline, PubMed, Meditext, PsycInfo, Scopus and Web of Science--were used to identify peer-reviewed publications that addressed barriers and facilitators to chlamydia testing in general practice using the following terms: 'chlamydia test*', 'STI test*' 'general practice', 'primary care', 'family medicine', 'barriers', 'facilitators' a

Independent SAGE as an example of effective public dialogue on scientific research.

The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 to be a public health emergency of international concern on 30 January 2020 and then a pandemic on 11 March 2020. In early 2020, a group of UK scientists volunteered to provide the public with up-to-date and transparent scientific information. The group formed the Independent Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Independent SAGE) and provided live weekly briefings to the public via YouTube. In this Perspective, we describe how and why this group came together and the challenges it faced. We reflect on 4 years of scientific information broad

Schools at the center of a public health emergency: leveraging schools for pediatric COVID-19 vaccination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's expansion of COVID-19 vaccine eligibility in 2021 to include children presented opportunities and challenges to ensure widespread access. Children, and especially adolescents, were a crucial target population to reduce community positivity rates and support a resumption of in-person academics. Though existing school-based vaccination programs have demonstrated success in improving vaccination rates on an individual school level, best practice strategies for employing mass vaccination programs quickly in response to public health emergencies have yet to b

Expectation as a Risk for Covid-19-Related Olfactory Changes: Observations From the California Farmworkers Health Survey.

Some outcomes in medical and public health research, as well as clinical practice, must rely on patient reports and may be influenced by the prior knowledge of the patient. During the early months of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, changes in the sense of smell and taste were widely reported as a distinctive aspect of the new respiratory contagion. Using a Rubin Model of causal inference and data from a California Department of Public Health-sponsored survey of California farmworker health, we estimate that approximately half (56.5%) of infected patients reporting olfactory changes after a diagnosis

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene among pre-adolescent students in public and private schools in Jordan: cross-sectional school-based study.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining good hygiene, which is easily applied with access to safe and adequate water, is an important preventive step against various infectious disease transmissions that might spread as a result of unclean water and inadequate sanitation. Jordan is one of the world's most water-stressed countries, and only one in three schools has basic sanitary facilities, which poses severe health risks to students. Assessing WASH-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices provides valuable evidence to guide interventions that promote healthy behaviors and reduce these risks. PURPOSE: Thi

Patient and public involvement in the management and prevention of cardiovascular disease: a statement of the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions of the ESC and the ESC Patient Forum.

Patient and public involvement (PPI) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the management and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), at multiple levels. The partnership with patients and the public, those who are directly affected by CVD, is central to delivering personalized care, and may contribute to decreasing the burden of CVD and reducing health inequalities. This statement describes the concept of PPI and highlights the role of PPI across different settings including: clinical practice, research, regulatory processes, and policy and clinical guideline development. Recognition of the va
