Radiotherapy remains one of the main pillars of cancer treatment and is used in more than half of all oncological patients. Despite continuous technological improvements, ionizing radiation inevitably causes damage to surrounding healthy tissues, leading to acute and chronic complications affecting multiple organs, including the skin, mucosa, heart, lungs, bones and gastrointestinal tract. Radiation-induced injuries significantly impair patients' quality of life, limit therapeutic doses, and represent a major unmet clinical challenge. Hydrogels have emerged as promising biomaterials for managi

In recent years, concern about the effects of ionizing radiation on exposed individuals has led to the need to regulate and quantify the use of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Geopolitical events in recent times have also increased the population's perception of insecurity regarding ionizing radiation, and we increasingly face patients reluctant to undergo certain types of scans in our nuclear medicine services and, albeit less frequently, in radiology services. This article aims to summarise the extent to which ionizing radiation is present in our daily lives and how diagnostic and the

PURPOSE: Currently, there exists a lack of recent epidemiological data concerning ocular injuries due to welding related activities. Our stu … h burns (62.1%), foreign body implantation (19.6%), and contusions/abrasions (11.1%). The number of radiation injuries trended down from 9286 in 2010 to 4023. With respect to a documented location, 38.9% occurred at home and 4.5% occurred in a school setting. Most patients (99.9%) were discharged from the ED; 0.1% were admitted to the hospital.
CONCLUSIONS: The dat …

PURPOSE: To review and discuss how interventional technologists and other health care professionals can better reduce the potentially harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed. Studies that investigated the biologic effects of ionizing radiation and methods of protection were included. Findings pertaining to radiation effects and protection were reported. Selected studies were assigned a level of evidence based on existing guidelines.
RESULTS: Radiation exposure can result in many health issues, including skin necrosis, radiation burns, ca

Objective: To study the correlation between occupational radiation exposure and chronic metabolic diseases. Methods: The status of chronic metabolic diseases of medical workers were compared in 5 hospitals in Hangzhou. As representatives of chronic metabolic diseases, diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MS) were compared in association with duration of radiation exposure. Results: Long-term ionizing radiation (IR) exposure was led to increased blood pressure, fasting blood glucose (FBG) , dyslipidemia, gallbladder disease, and MS. The years of radiation exposure was associated with lens opacity,

The marked radiosensitivity of renal tissue represents a limitation on the total radiotherapeutic dose that safely can be applied to treatment volumes that include the kidneys. Radiation nephropathy is characterized by a progressive reduction in renal hemodynamics associated with a severe anemia. The latter is often normochromic normocytic in character, but can progress to a microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. The pathogenic mechanisms responsible for the development of radiation nephropathy remain ill-defined. Experimental studies which allow serial determinations of functional, morphologic, a

Exposure to ionizing radiation alone or combined with traumatic tissue injury is a crucial life-threatening factor in nuclear and radiological incidents. Radiation injuries occur at the molecular, cellular, tissue and systemic levels; their mechanisms, however, remain largely unclear. Exposure to radiation combined with skin wounding, bacterial infection or burns results in greater mortality than radiation exposure alone in dogs, pigs, rats, guinea pigs and mice. In the current study we observed that B6D2F1/J female mice exposed to 60Co gamma-photon radiation followed by 15% total-body-surface…

Are observations on ultraviolet (UV)- and visible light-induced ocular changes in animals relevant for human pathology? Different conclusions are drawn by different groups, depending on their perspective: while in the epidemiologist's view the evidence for those lesions is mostly limited or insufficient, laboratory scientists continually extend observations on radiation damage in animals. Consequently, there are diverging views on the necessity and specifications for eye protection. In this review, problems of epidemiological surveys and observations in humans and animal studies are discussed,

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF) on the healing of cutaneous chronic wounds.
METHODS: Twenty-eight cases with thirty-three wounds from trauma, diabetes, pressure and radiation injuries were locally treated with bFGF in a dosage of 150 U/cm2 wounds. The healing time of wounds was used to evaluate the treatment results.
RESULTS: The healing time in all of chronic wounds were accelerated. All wounds from trauma, diabetes and pressure were healed within 4 weeks and another 2 wounds from radiation injuries were healed over 4 weeks. The healing rate within …

Radiation therapy (RT) is one of the cornerstones in cancer treatment and approximately half of all patients will receive some form of RT during the course of their cancer management. Response evaluation after RT and follow-up imaging with 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) can be complicated by RT-induced acute, chronic or consequential effects. There is a general consensus that 18F-FDG PET/CT for response evaluation should be delayed for 12 weeks after completing RT to minimize the risk of false-positive findings. Radiation-induced late

INTRODUCTION: Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) creation is one of the most complex and radiation-intensive procedures in abdominal interventional radiology. Radiation-induced skin injuries may occur at doses above 2 Gy. This study aimed to evaluate patient radiation exposure during TIPS performed in a single high-volume referral center (>20 procedures/year).
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 359 consecutive TIPS performed between July 2017 and December 2024. Real-time ultrasound guidance was systematically used for portal vein targeting. Radiation exposure w

Radiation-induced brain injury is a common complication of brain irradiation that eventually leads to irreversible cognitive impairment. Evidence has shown that the gut microbiome may play an important role in radiation-induced cognitive function. However, the effects of gut microbiota on radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI) remain poorly understood. Here we studied the link between intestinal microbes and radiation-induced brain injury to further investigate the effects of intestinal bacteria on neuroinflammation and cognitive function. We first verified the differences in gut microbes betwe
