Development of hypothermia measurable fiber radiometric thermometer for thermotherapy.

Temperature monitoring is extremely important during thermotherapy. Fiber-optic temperature sensors are preferred because of their flexibility and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Although many types of fiber-optic sensors have been developed, clinically adopting them remains challenging. Here, we report a silica fiber-based radiometric thermometer using a low-cost extended InGaAs detector to detect black body radiation between 1.7 and 2.4 μm. For the first time, this silica fiber-based thermometer is capable of measuring temperatures down to 35°C, making it suitable for monitoring hy

Ocular Changes in Human Spaceflight.

Spaceflight presents unique challenges to ocular health, with astronauts experiencing a range of visual disturbances in the setting of microgravity, radiation exposure, and other environmental factors. This review synthesizes knowledge about how spaceflight affects ocular anatomy and function. We outline the diagnostic and therapeutic limitations in microgravity, including constraints on imaging modalities, intracranial pressure measurement, and drug delivery. In addition, we examine common spaceflight-associated ocular pathologies, including spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome, corne

Putting evidence into practice.

Radiation dermatitis, or radiodermatitis, is a significant symptom caused by radiation therapy for the treatment of cancerous and noncancerous conditions. Radiodermatitis can negatively affect patients' physical functioning and quality of life. The Oncology Nursing Society coordinated a Putting Evidence Into Practice (PEP) project team to develop a PEP resource summarizing current evidence for the management of patients with radiodermatitis. Oncology nurses play an important role in educating, assessing, and monitoring patients for this symptom. Many common nursing interventions for radioderma

[Dermatologic radiotherapy].

Dermatologic radiotherapy is based on the standard physical and radiobiological parameters. The radiation quality most often used in dermatology lies between 10 and 50 kV. Another important parameter is the half-value depth which should correspond to the depth of the tumor below the skin surface. In this way the skin is not over-exposed to radiation treatment. Indications for radiotherapy of malignant skin tumors include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, severe actinic keratoses, lentigo maligna, lentigo maligna melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and Kaposi sarcoma, as well as T- an

Radioprotection for Interventional Echocardiographers: A Consensus Statement of the Italian Society of Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging.

The interventional echocardiographer (IE) plays a crucial role in structural heart interventions, yet faces significant risks from ionizing radiation, often greater than those encountered by the primary interventional cardiologist (IC). This elevated exposure is due to the IE's close proximity to the patient's head and, consequently, to the X-ray source, combined with a general lack of dedicated protective equipment designed for their position. Despite growing awareness of radiation safety in the catheterization lab, the specific protection needs of IEs remain under-recognized. Recent studies

A survey of changing trends in modelling radiation lung injury in mice: bringing out the good, the bad, and the uncertain.

Within this millennium there has been resurgence in funding and research dealing with animal models of radiation-induced lung injury to identify and establish predictive biomarkers and effective mitigating agents that are applicable to humans. Most have been performed on mice but there needs to be assurance that the emphasis on such models is not misplaced. We therefore considered it timely to perform a comprehensive appraisal of the literature dealing with radiation lung injury of mice and to critically evaluate the validity and clinical relevance of the research. A total of 357 research pape

Case report of cold-weather-induced radiation recall dermatitis after chemoradiotherapy with cisplatin.

BACKGROUND: The radiation recall reaction (RRR) is an inflammatory reaction that occurs in previously irradiated areas. The phenomenon is probably due to an idiosyncratic hypersensitivity reaction, in which a second agent can recall the inflammatory reaction. CASE REPORT: This case report documents a cold-weather-induced radiation recall dermatitis (RRD). We observed a severe RRD in a patient after chemoradiotherapy treatment with cisplatin for a nasopharyngeal carcinoma, precipitated by cold temperatures, which developed 9 days after completion of therapy. In the medical literature, RRD foll

Half-body radiotherapy. Evaluation of the technique in normal dogs.

Eight healthy mongrel dogs were treated with half-body irradiation (HBI) in a pilot study to evaluate the technique and radiotolerance of different organs. Cranial and caudal half-body fields were established using the 13th thoracic vertebra as the dividing point. Under general anesthesia, either 7 or 8 Gray (Gy) were delivered to one half of the body using opposing radiation portals. The other half of the body was similarly treated 28 days later. The dogs were monitored for 12 months. Significant radiation effects included transient bone marrow suppression and radiation sickness. There were n

[Implementation Report: Attempt for a Decision of Priorities in Measures to Prevent Recurrence of Low-level Incidents Using Priority Monitoring Score].

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to attempt to make a decision on priorities in measures to prevent recurrence of previously reported low-level incidents using the priority monitoring score. METHODS: A survey of the low-level incidents reported over the past 5 years in the department of radiation therapy was conducted among 7 radiological technologists. From the results of the survey, the priority monitoring score was calculated by multiplying each score of the potential incident level, the occurrence frequency, and the detectability. Additionally, the relationship between the priority moni

Image-guided activation of drugs with electromagnetic radiation.

Image-guided pharmacotherapy, in which drug activity is strictly confined to disease areas revealed by medical imaging modalities, holds great promise for the development of personalized medicine. A key step in realizing this potential is the development of safe and precise methods for drug activation. Electromagnetic radiation, spanning the energy ranges from γ-rays to ultraviolet-visible and infrared light, has emerged as a method of choice for this purpose. Because many imaging modalities rely on electromagnetic radiation to generate signals (for example, optical and optoacoustic imaging, c

Occupational radiation dose among student radiographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and radiotherapists in an Australian university.

To become registered radiation worker as radiographer, nuclear medicine (NM) technologist, or radiotherapist in Australian health system, a 4-y bachelor's degree, or a 2-y master's degree in medical imaging (MI), NM, or radiation therapy (RT) approved by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is required. During their supervised clinical practice period, it is crucial to monitor students' occupational radiation dose as their annual dose limit is 1 mSv y-1 unlike regular occupational dose of 20 mSv y-1. In this study, the distribution and trend of occupational dose among over 300

Long-term follow-up study of genome damage elimination in patients with testicular seminoma exposed to ionising radiation during radiotherapy.

The rate of genome damage elimination after therapeutic exposure to ionising radiation was estimated in stage I testicular seminoma patients monitored over a seven-year follow-up. DNA damage elimination in peripheral lymphocytes of ten subjects was analysed by the chromosome aberration assay. Seven years after the end of radiotherapy, significantly increased frequency of ring and dicentric chromosomes was still detected in comparison with baseline values. These results indicate the induction of genome instability. Long-term follow-up studies of cancer patients after radiotherapy could give us

Cancer risk among staff at two radiotherapy departments in Denmark.

In comparison with the general Danish population, the relative risk (RR) for cancer among staff members employed in two radiotherapy departments in Denmark during 1954-1982 and alive on 1 April 1968 was assessed by linkage to the Danish Cancer Registry. All staff had been monitored with film dosimeters for exposure to radiation. The study cohort consisted of 4151 persons, accruing 49553 person-years at risk. The collective radiation dose was 76.54 manSv and the mean dose 18.4 mSv. A total of 163 cancer cases were observed with 152.3 expected. The risks for cancers usually considered to be radi

Greater sensitivity to ionizing radiation at older age: follow-up of workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory through 1990.

BACKGROUND: Workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) were individually monitored for whole body exposure to ionizing radiation. Studies of these workers may provide valuable information about the long-term effects of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. Since biological changes occur as adults age, a potentially important question in these investigations is whether sensitivity to the carcinogenic effects of ionizing radiation changes with age at exposure. METHODS: Vital status and cause of death were ascertained through 1990 for 8307 white males hired at ORNL from 1943 through

Radiomics analysis of 3D spheroids captures irradiation-induced structural and textural changes.

Although radiotherapy (RT) is one of the main approaches used in cancer treatment, differences in clinical response among patients have not been eliminated, underscoring the need for improved methods to analyze radiobiological responses. Elucidation of variable responses requires a reliable preclinical model, among which three-dimensional (3D) cell aggregates have emerged as a new gold standard due to their physiological relevance and close resemblance to tumor microenvironments. Non-destructive assessment of the effect of RT or other treatments typically involves brightfield imaging to quanti

Radiation-Induced miRNAs Changes and cf mtDNA Level in Trauma Surgeons: Epigenetic and Molecular Biomarkers of X-ray Exposure.

Exposure to ionizing radiation can result in the development of a number of diseases, including cancer, cataracts and neurodegenerative pathologies. Certain occupational groups are exposed to both natural and artificial sources of radiation as a consequence of their professional activities. The development of non-invasive biomarkers to assess the risk of exposure to ionizing radiation for these groups is of great importance. In this context, our objective was to identify epigenetic and molecular biomarkers that could be used to monitor exposure to ionizing radiation. The impact of X-ray exposu

18F-FDG-PET/MR in Alveolar Echinococcosis: Multiparametric Imaging in a Real-World Setting.

Recent improvements in alveolar echinococcosis (AE) therapy can provide long-term disease control, and even allow structured treatment interruption in selected cases. Imaging has a pivotal role in monitoring disease activity, with 18-fluoro-deoxyglucose positron emission and computed tomography (18F-FDG-PET/CT) in particular having proven beneficial for assessing disease activity. Repetitive regular examinations to monitor therapy response, however, can lead to substantial radiation burden. Therefore, by combining metabolic information and excellent tissue contrast in magnetic resonance imagin
