Background Carpal tunnel release (CTR) may be concomitantly performed along with distal radius fracture open reduction internal fixation (DRF ORIF) to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome; however, there is little to no literature investigating the rate, risk factors, and complications associated with CTR. Questions/Purposes The purpose was to determine (1) the rate of CTR performed at time of DRF ORIF, (2) factors associated with CTR, and (3) whether CTR was associated with any complications. Patients and Methods In this case-control study, adult patients who underwent DRF ORIF from 2014 to 2018

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the joint fragment that mostly affects the outcome of the distal radius fracture surgically treated with a volar locking plate (VLP).
METHODS: The outcomes of 69 patients with the distal radius fractures were evaluated at their final follow-up. The articular surface was divided into six specific fragments, and computed tomography (CT) was used to evaluate the degree of mismatch of each fragments. A plain radiograph was also obtained for evaluation of the distal radius alignment. Clinical outcomes were measured by using the Disabilities of the …

AIMS: Fractures of the distal radius are common, and form a considerable proportion of the trauma workload. We conducted a study to examine the patterns of injury and treatment for adult patients presenting with distal radius fractures to a major trauma centre serving an urban population.
METHODS: We undertook a retrospective cohort study to identify all patients treated at our major trauma centre for a distal radius fracture between 1 June 2018 and 1 May 2021. We reviewed the medical records and imaging for each patient to examine patterns of injury and treatment. We undertook a binomial log…

The role of hand therapy in management of distal radius fractures remains unclear. Some evidence demonstrates that initiating early range of motion and urging patients to return to routine activities of daily living as soon as possible may produce favorable outcomes that are as effective as formal supervised therapy. Extended supervised therapy does not appear to impact outcomes and a single instruction session with a home-based program produces similar results. Although we feel that formal structured therapy may have a role in select high-risk patients, the literature remains unclear on which…

INTRODUCTION: Traditional plaster and fiberglass casts are not waterproof. This experimental study compares the water-resistant and drying properties of two commercially available orthoses with traditional cast liners.
METHODS: Two orthotic brace systems were selected for comparative waterproof testing with plaster and fiberglass traditional cast liners. This entailed water submersion for 10 seconds, followed by light drip drying for another 10 seconds. Moisture levels were then measured at four different locations immediately after drip drying and then every 15 minutes up to 45 minutes.

Distal radius fractures are some of the most common fractures treated by the orthopaedic surgeon. There are a variety of methods of fixation to treat these fractures; however, in patients with polytrauma and in high-energy fracture patterns, fixation options can be limited. In the past, these fractures were treated with plaster, Kirschner wires, or external fixators that were fraught with complications. The dorsal spanning plate is an excellent option in the treatment of high-energy fractures and patients with polytrauma, fractures with dorsal or volar comminution, fracture dislocations, and s…

CASE: We report a case of complete median nerve transection due to a distal radius fracture. In the setting of high energy trauma and a widely displaced fracture, a volar ulnar spike from the proximal fragment likely transected the median nerve. After open reduction and internal fixation of the distal radius fracture, the median nerve was repaired directly. Postoperative radiographs at 10 weeks revealed a healed fracture with clinical examination, showing good pain-free range of motion at the radiocarpal joint.
CONCLUSION: This case suggests that exploration and visualization of the median ne

CASE: A 10-year-old boy presented with a Salter-Harris II distal radius fracture that was irreducible by closed methods. An open reduction was performed in the operating room where a sleeve of periosteum was found interposed between the fracture fragments. Successful reduction was performed without difficulty after the periosteum was removed from the fracture.
CONCLUSION: Soft-tissue interposition must be kept in mind when having difficulty performing closed reductions of pediatric distal radius physeal fractures to avoid excessive reduction attempts.

HYPOTHESIS: When the distal fracture fragment in distal radius fractures displaces, it commonly rotates as well as shortens and angulates.
AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and magnitude of malrotation of the distal fracture fragment using computed tomography (CT).
METHODS: A retrospective radiological assessment of 85 CT scans of the distal radius, 35 following fracture and 50 normal radii, was carried out. We developed and applied a simple method for measuring rotation of the distal radius relative to the diaphysis using routine CT scans of the wrist. A Mann-Whitney an…

Internal radiocarpal distraction plating is a versatile tool in the treatment of distal radius fractures that are not amenable to nonoperative treatment or operative fixation with standard volar or dorsal implants. Internal distraction plates may also be indicated in the setting of polytrauma or osteopenic bone. The plate functions as an internal fixator, using ligamentotaxis to restore length and alignment while providing relative stability for bony healing. The plate can be fixed to either the second or the third metacarpal, and anatomic and biomechanical studies have assessed the strengths …

UNLABELLED: Fractures of the head or neck of the radius account for 5% of elbow fractures in adults. Treatment varies between authors. We report a retrospective series of 12 cases of percutaneous reduction of Mason II radial head fracture, without internal fixation. All fractures consolidated, without secondary displacement. There were no postoperative complications. Mean ranges of motion were 136° flexion-extension and 175° pronation-supination. Mean QuickDASH score was 11. Results in the present series were at least comparable to those for other techniques, validating percutaneous treatment
