Single and combined impacts of irradiation and surgery on lymphatic vasculature and fibrosis associated to secondary lymphedema.

Lymphedema (LD) refers to a condition of lymphatic dysfunction associated with excessive fluid accumulation, fibroadipose tissue deposition and swelling. In industrialized countries, LD development mainly results from a local disruption of the lymphatic network by an infection or cancer-related surgery (secondary LD). In the absence of efficient therapy, animal models are needed to decipher the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying LD and test putative drugs. In this study, we optimized and characterized a murine model of LD that combines an irradiation of the mice hind limb and a radic

Vagus nerve stimulation to augment recovery from severe traumatic brain injury impeding consciousness: a prospective pilot clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has high morbidity and mortality in both civilian and military populations. Blast and other mechani … vagus nerve results in increased cerebral blood flow and metabolism in the forebrain, thalamus, and reticular formation, which promotes arousal and improved consciousness, thereby improving outcome after TBI resulting in MCS or VS. DISCUSSION: If this study demonstrates that VNS can safely and positively impact outcome, then a larger randomized prospective crossover …

Allopurinol induced granuloma annulare in a patient of lepromatous leprosy.

Granuloma annulare (GA) is a benign, inflammatory dermatosis involving dermis or subcutis with unknown etiology and poorly understood pathology. GA has characteristic histological features of necrobiosis, granuloma formation and abundant mucin deposition. Various predisposing factors, systemic diseases and drugs have been implicated in the etiology. We hereby describe a case of 70 year old male who was a known case of lepromatous leprosy, taking multidrug therapy for 6 months presented with multiple discrete, annular, firm, non tender, smooth surfaced skin colored papular lesions ranging in si

Movement- and behavioral state-dependent activity of pontine reticulospinal neurons.

Forty-five years ago Shik and colleagues were the first to demonstrate that electrical stimulation of the dorsal pontine reticular formation induced fictive locomotion in decerebrate cats. This supraspinal motor site was subsequently termed the "mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR)". Cholinergic neurons of the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPT) have been suggested to form, or at least comprise in part, the neuroanatomical basis for the MLR, but direct evidence is lacking. In an effort to clarify the location and activity profiles of pontine reticulospinal neurons supporting locomotor beh…

Electroencephalographical analysis of acute paraquat poisoning.

The disturbances in the central nervous system of rabbits induced by gramoxon poisoning were studied by examination of subcortical electroencephalograms (EEGs) and power spectral analysis of EEGs. The following results were obtained. Administration of the fatal gramoxon (2.0 ml/kg i.p.) resulted in increases of slow frequency discharges from the reticular formation (RF), and from the hippocampus (Hpc) and sensorimotor cortex (Cm) after about 5 minutes and 20 minutes, respectively, detected by power-spectrum array. After about 30 to 40 minutes, the discharges from the Cm changed to rapid freque…

The autophagy process and oxidized LDL independently modulate the invasion and differentiation of extravillous trophoblastic cells to an endothelial-like phenotype in normoxia.

INTRODUCTION: The mechanisms leading to proper placentation are not fully understood. Extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) are crucial for placentation through invasion and vascular remodeling, which, when impaired, promote a poor placentation. How autophagy could regulate EVTs function and the study of regulators of these processes, such as oxidized low-density lipoproteins (ox-LDL), could contribute to better understand events associated with pregnancy complications related to abnormal placental development, such as preeclampsia (PE). AIM: To investigate the role of autophagy and oxidized LDL (

Hydroxamate Titanium-Organic Frameworks and the Effect of Siderophore-Type Linkers over Their Photocatalytic Activity.

The chemistry of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) relies on the controlled linking of organic molecules and inorganic secondary building units to assemble an unlimited number of reticular frameworks. However, the design of porous solids with chemical stability still remains limited to carboxylate or azolate groups. There is a timely opportunity to develop new synthetic platforms that make use of unexplored metal binding groups to produce metal-linker joints with hydrolytic stability. Living organisms use siderophores (iron carriers in Greek) to effectively assimilate iron in soluble form. These

Astrocytes follow ganglion cell axons to establish an angiogenic template during retinal development.

Immature astrocytes and blood vessels enter the developing mammalian retina at the optic nerve head and migrate peripherally to colonize the entire retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). Retinal vascularization is arrested in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a major cause of bilateral blindness in children. Despite their importance in normal development and ROP, the factors that control vascularization of the retina remain poorly understood. Because astrocytes form a reticular network that appears to provide a substrate for migrating endothelial cells, they have long been proposed to guide angioge
