Synemin (Syn) is an intermediate filament (IF) protein. To gain insight into a morphogenetic role of Syn, we have studied its expression patterns in the developing human retina and lens and compared it with those of other IF proteins. In addition, we have tested Syn expression in fetuses (23 and 28 weeks) affected by Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS), Meckel syndrome, and trisomy 13. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) performs two contrasting enzymatic effects: as part of the renin-angiotensin system it converts angiotensin I into physiologically active angiotensin II, and it inactivates a number of peptides, e.g. substance P. PATIENT: A 44-year-old woman has a history of multiple sclerosis since 20 years. Besides recurrent numbness she had many instances of optic nerve neuritis which has led to a pronounced optic atrophy on her left eye. Additionally, she has developed recurrent iridocyclitis on her right eye. This was the reason why she was referred to our outpatient department for evaluation. INTERVENTION: A 10-month-old girl with tuberous sclerosis was found to have bilateral astrocytic hamartomas, the right eye being prominently involved by elevated and pedunculated lesions. At 7 years of age, she had posterior subcapsular cataract, retinal detachment, and subretinal exudation develop in the right eye. We have used immunoreactions against serotonin and protein kinase C to visualize two distinct classes of bipolar cell in the all-rod retina of the skate, Raja erinacea.
