Integrated deep learning model for multi-label retinal disease diagnosis.

The multi-label retinal disease classification is a difficult one since fundus images might comprise many co-occurring abnormalities, extreme in relation to the class, as well as significant lesion appearance variation. In order to deal with this issue, this paper suggests a combined deep learning architecture to diagnose retinal diseases automatically with the help of the MuReD dataset, which includes 2208 fundus images that were gathered at ARIA, STARE, and RFMiD and reformulated with 19 retinal disease labels, excluding the non-diagnostic category of OTHERS. The proposed model is based on a…

Photoreceptor replacement: a disease-agnostic approach for the treatment of advanced retinal degeneration.

Retinal dystrophies such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affect millions of individuals worldwide and remain leading causes of irreversible blindness. Photoreceptor transplantation has emerged as a promising and disease-agnostic therapeutic approach for restoring vision in advanced degenerative retinal diseases characterised by the loss of rods and/or cones. This brief review summarises some key areas of progress and future directions for photoreceptor replacement therapy, with consideration given to translating pre-clinical findings to the clinic.

A self-supervised learning method for detection of retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and Stargardt Disease (STGD) are inherited retinal diseases that can seriously affect vision. In this study, we present a novel, two-phase self-supervised learning method that addresses the challenge of limited labeled data in medical image analysis. In the first phase, the model learns useful visual features from a large collection of unlabeled retinal images using self-supervised training. In the second phase, it is fine-tuned on a smaller set of labeled images for the classification of RP and STGD. Experimental results demonstrate that using 5844 unlabeled and 782 …

Assessment of individual retinal layer thickness and vascular changes in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of dementia, underscoring the need for early and accurate diagnostic methods. This cross-sectional study examines the thickness of individual retinal layers and vessel density (VD) in 23 patients with AD and 22 healthy controls (HC). All participants underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic assessments and cognitive evaluations. AD patients exhibited significantly reduced mean macular retinal thickness compared to HC in foveal and parafoveal areas (p < 0.05). The most significant differences were noted in specific sectors of the Inner Nuclear Layer (IN

Multi-modal classification of retinal disease based on convolutional neural network.

Retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy will lead to irreversible blindness without timely diagnosis and treatment. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images provide complementary views of the retina, and the integration of the two imaging modalities can improve the accuracy of retinal disease classification. We propose a multi-modal classification model consisting of two branches to automatically diagnose retinal diseases, in which OCT and OCTA images are efficiently integrated to improve both the a…

Retinal vascular proliferation with fibrotic regression in von Hippel-Lindau disease.

In this study, we report a rare case of retinal vascular proliferation (RVP) in von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease, followed by a literature review. A 12-year-old boy presented with a left cerebellar hemangioblastoma and right eye blurred vision for 1-2 years. Fundus examination found no capillary hemangioblastoma lesion but a broad epiretinal fibrovascular membrane, which caused significant traction to the right macula. The genetic testing identified a pathogenic missense mutation (c. 223A > G) within the VHL gene, confirming VHL disease. RVP is a less common, poorly understood condition that ca

Early detection of Parkinson's disease: Retinal functional impairments as potential biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is typically diagnosed after substantial neurodegeneration despite early non-motor symptoms manifesting decades earlier. These changes offer a promising avenue for diagnostic exploration, especially within the eye, which has been proposed as a "window to the brain." OBJECTIVE: The aim was to identify biomarkers by validating the use of electroretinography, a non-invasive technique, to detect early retinal function anomalies reflecting central dysfunction. METHODS: Homozygous M83 transgenic mice (n = 10 males, 11 females), overexpressing human A53T α-synuclein,

Retinal microvascular alterations in Parkinson's disease: visual analysis and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel ocular imaging technique that has garnered significant attention from neurologists due to its ability to assess retinal microvascular changes in neurodegenerative diseases. In recent years, numerous studies have reported retinal microvascular abnormalities in Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we employ visual analysis and meta-analysis to identify research trends regarding the application of OCTA in PD, and to evaluate the potential of retinal blood flow alterations as an early diagnostic marker for PD. METHODS: Thi

Co-occurrence of Parkinson's disease and Retinitis Pigmentosa: A genetic and in silico analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily driven by the protein Alpha Synuclein (A-Syn) accumulation. Synphilin-1 protein, encoded by the SNCAIP gene, which co-localizes with A-Syn is a known risk factor for PD. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP), is a cluster of retinal degenerative disorders, and Cyclic Nucleotide Gated channel subunit Alpha 1 (CNGA1) is one of the initial genes associated with RP. Patients with PD can have various kinds of visual dysfunction as a non-motor manifestation, but to date, CNGA1 mutation and RP as a PD associated visual symptom has not been reported. We report a
