PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to review all histopathologic sections from surgical specimens with inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal carcinoma filed at this hospital between 1951 and 1996.
METHOD: A total of 40 surgical (n = 39) or autopsy (n = 1) colon or colorectal specimens were reviewed. Internationally accepted histologic criteria were strictly applied to differentiate Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and indeterminate colitis (IC).

The case records of 189 dogs (including 38 breeds) with congestive heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy were studied retrospectively. Airedale terriers, boxers, Doberman pinschers, English cocker spaniels, Newfoundlands, St. Bernards, and standard poodles were over-represented. German shepherd dogs were under-represented. We undertook a retrospective study to examine our experience with acute mastoiditis over a 12-year period. Fifty-eight cases were identified in children aged 3 months to 15 years. Acute mastoiditis was the first evidence of otitis media in 54% of our patients. Pain and fever lasting for more than a median period of 4 days were most likely to be the harbingers of incipient acute mastoiditis. Since 1928, 288 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and bronchiectasis have been reported in the medical literature. The interactions between these two conditions and the etiopathogenic mechanisms they involve remain unclear. During a retrospective study of 100 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 80 bronchiectasis patients, we identified 14 additional patients with both conditions. Delayed consequences of polio virus infection are of growing interest because of the increasing incidence of new symptoms in patients who previously had poliomyelitis. We examined 121 patients with an earlier diagnosis of acute anterior poliomyelitis for features of the postpolio syndrome using the criteria of Halstead and found evidence of the syndrome in 68.07% of the patients. Meaningful management of these patients requires recognition of the clinical features of the condition and a collaborative approach involving physicians, physiotherapists, psychotherapists and social workers.

Enteric fever is still a common health problem in many countries, especially in children. Thus a ten-year retrospective study was carried out to evaluate the clinical and laboratory properties of enteric fever and the incidence of antimicrobial resistance in children. A retrospective study was performed on 11 patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation for Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS), 3 of whom had fulminant type BCS and 8, chronic type BCS. The incidence of hand injuries in multiple trauma is not well investigated. Between 1980 and 1986, 782 multiple trauma patients received primary treatment at the University Hospital of Erlangen. At the time of the study, 22% (n = 173) of these patients had died. 93% of the patients met with a traffic accident. The authors report retrospectively 38 cases of Schönlein-Henoch purpura (20 males, 18 females; median age, 26 years). Skin (37/38) and joint (21/38) manifestations are similar to those seen in children. Gastro intestinal (22/38) manifestations are less complicated. Long term outcome of the disease depends on kidney's involvement (32/38) and is severe: chronic renal failure in 31%.

One hundred testicular biopsies performed during the period of 1983-90 were reviewed to reappraise the value and utility of testicular biopsy in cases of male infertility. All the biopsies were categorised into the following 7 types and their relative incidences were determined. There were 16% normal cases. A retrospective study of 376 patients with dementia was performed to determine the rate of syphilis seropositivity. Subjects were seen over a 2.5-year period and received medical, social, psychiatric, neurological, and laboratory evaluations. Mean age was 74 years and 73% were women.
