Women's Health Consciousness and Attitude Towards Breast Cancer Screening in Rural Punjab, India: A Cross-Sectional Study in Ludhiana District.

Breast cancer has become more common in developing countries like India and is the most common cancer among women globally. Even though screening greatly increases survival, poor participation rates are still seen in rural areas. The purpose of this cross-sectional study, which was carried out in Lalton Kalan village, Punjab, was to provide insight into how sociodemographic traits affected the health consciousness and attitudes of 203 women who were 30 years of age and older regarding breast cancer screening. Data were collected using a pre-tested questionnaire that utilized the Health Conscio

Perceived water safety and elevated liver enzymes in rural West Virginia: links between drinking water, beverage habits, and liver health.

INTRODUCTION: In rural communities, aging infrastructure and environmental challenges can contribute to mistrust in tap water, potentially influencing hydration behaviors and health outcomes. The relationship between perceived water safety and liver health remains underexplored, particularly in low-resource Appalachian settings in the US. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined data from 272 adult patients in a primary care clinic in rural West Virginia, US. Participants rated their home tap water safety on a seven-point scale and reported beverage consumption patterns in a survey. Clini

Loneliness among emerging adults in rural reservation-based communities: longitudinal effects of 12th grade substance use and mental health symptoms.

Loneliness is a growing public concern among emerging adults, yet little is known about its predictors in rural and reservation-based communities. This study examines whether substance use and mental health symptoms in 12th grade predict loneliness post high school among a rural reservation-based sample. Participants (n = 483) were surveyed in 12th grade (Spring 2024) and again six months into young adulthood (Fall 2024). Independence estimating equations with a Poisson distribution were used to assess the effect of past 30-day substance use (alcohol use, binge drinking, cannabis use, vaping c

Perceptions about chronic health conditions, multimorbidity and self-management practices in rural northeast South Africa: findings from a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic health conditions are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with a disproportionately high burden in low-income and middle-income countries. The burden arising from these conditions presents immense challenges to countries with dysfunctional public healthcare systems, such as South Africa. This necessitates patients to have a good understanding of the conditions and optimal self-management approaches. We explored patients' understanding of chronic health conditions and self-management practices, including self-monitoring, in the rural South African comm

Evidence-Based Intrapartum Care: A Retrospective Descriptive Assessment of Facility-Based Births in Rural Public Health Facilities in Midwestern Uganda.

Introduction Efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, have not been sufficient to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 for 2030. The quality of care around childbirth is critical for both mothers and newborns, and the use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) is vital in ensuring optimal outcomes. However, there is a paucity of recent research on the use of evidence-based practices in childbirth health facilities. Aims This study aimed to describe the use of intrapartum evidence-based practices for facility-based births in rural lower public health

Health system and social determinants influencing potential PrEP access among young men in rural Mpumalanga, South Africa: a qualitative analysis.

Young heterosexual men face HIV risk in South Africa's generalized HIV epidemic. Although many men express interest in biomedical pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), uptake of daily oral PrEP has been slow. Enhancing access to standard and alternative health care providers offering PrEP services could increase men's uptake as product options expand. We conducted in-depth interviews with 13 young men and 9 health system stakeholders in the rural Ehlanzeni District of Mpumalanga Province to explore factors shaping current or potential PrEP access, with a focus on social determinants and the health

Behavioral and Health Outcome Differences by Heroin or Methamphetamine Preference Among People in Rural US Communities Who Use Both Substances.

BACKGROUND: The United States' (US) opioid overdose epidemic has evolved into a combined stimulant/opioid epidemic, a pattern driven in part by mitigating opioid overdose risk, variable substance availability, and personal preferences. This study aimed to investigate the association between self-reported substance preference (heroin or methamphetamine) and behavioral/health outcomes among individuals who used both heroin and methamphetamine in the rural US. METHODS: The Rural Opioid Initiative is a consortium of 8 research cohorts from 10 states and 65 rural counties that recruited individual

Racial and ethnic disparities in periodontal health among adults seeking dental care in rural North Carolina communities: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Population studies consistently demonstrate a greater prevalence of chronic diseases, including oral diseases, among underrepresented minorities. This retrospective study aimed to measure and describe the prevalence and extent of periodontitis among adults seeking dental care within an academic practice-based network in rural North Carolina. METHODS: This study used de-identified electronic health record (EHR) data from 2011 to 2017 of adult dentate patients (aged ≥30 years) seeking dental care who received a comprehensive periodontal examination at one of nine networked clinical

Diffusion simulation, health risks, ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation potential of gaseous pollutants from rural comprehensive waste treatment plant.

Comprehensive waste treatment plants (CWTPs) are significant sources of gaseous pollutants such as odors, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), polluting the environment and endangering human health. This study conducted on-site investigations on gaseous pollutants emissions from different areas of a CWTP. A total of 10 pollutants were identified of which ammonia (11.32 mg/m³ in average) was the main odorous substance, and benzene (19.51 mg/m³ in average) and toluene (42.07 mg/m³ in average) were the main VOCs. The feeding workshop (FW) was considered the main source of

The authors aimed to develop a diabetes risk score for primary care providers in rural India. They used the baseline data of 451 participants (15-64 years) of a cohort study in a rural area of Kerala, India. The new risk score with age, family history of diabetes, and waist circumference identified 40.8% for confirmatory testing, had a sensitivity of 81.0%, specificity of 68.4%, positive predictive value of 37.0%, and negative predictive value of 94.0% for an optimal cutoff ≥4 with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.812 (95% confidence interval = 0.765-0.860). Predisposing factors related to adolescent sexuality among students in rural and urban school-based health centers in eastern North Carolina.

This study examined possible predisposing factors that may contribute to rural adolescents' early sexual behavior. Sexual behaviors, demographics, family structure, history of abuse, sexually active friends, and substance use were analyzed in 410 rural and urban adolescents, aged 10 to 19 years, who were enrolled in a school-based health center in North Carolina between 2005 and 2007. Results indicated that Black students residing in single-parent urban households were more likely to engage in sex earlier than other analyzed ethnic groups (odds ratio [OR] = 5.2; 95% confidence interval [CI] =
